      Funny thing, ill bet those guns the guards are not loaded. 😂😂
      When the stealth fighter was first introduced to the public they had it roped off with guards. I was taking with one of the guards and he told me they were not loaded. 😂😂😂

      @@kenkarish826 In ten years of US Navy service, I stood more shipboard and shore-station security watches than I could ever remember. On all of those watches I carried an unloaded semi-automatic pistol in a holster on my belt with two full magazines in a separate pouch. If the watch conditions required it, I carried a Thompson submachine gun and two loaded magazines. The conditions never got out of hand and they were only actually fired at the target range but don't ever think those sailors, soldiers, marines, or airmen on watch are just there for decoration.

    People laugh about the XBOX controller but just think if the Navy had gone to Raytheon or General Dynamics and asked them to design a periscope controller. They would have come up with the exact same thing but it would cost $3 Million dollars.

    • @JohnY-lw3ys
      @JohnY-lw3ys ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Only the ignorant peolple would laugh at this. The issue with custom made stuff is that not only you have to pay an exorbitant amount for it, but also you have to carry spare parts and you are dependent on the manufacturer to deliver. Having off the shelf items that you can mofify them slightly to do the job is priceless. No matter where you are in the world, you will find an XBOX controller and I am sure they have some in their recreation room. After all they are made from the same chips and software that the custom controllers would have been made. Besides it shows great ingenuity. Kudos to whoever thought using it.

      Its actually ingenious. Whoever decided to switch to the game pad controller was a genuis. Not did they only come up with a better tool but a far cheaper and easier accesible tool to use that is intuitive to most new sailors

    • @electrofelon
      @electrofelon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The benefit that Raytheon or GD provide is that there would have been 100 engineers put to that task. And over-engineered it to death. BUT they have spare parts, engineering on call, they can’t discontinue the product or go out of business. They have the intense knowledge of the product and could most likely resolve any issues with the equipment very quickly.
      With an Xbox controller you’d be depending on Microsoft to support any issues, with relatively low knowledge of the defense industry.

    Great video. I served aboard 3 subs back in the late 70's to mid 80's, loved it, great crews and great food. Back then all enlisted had to learn how to "drive the boat" with the stern planes and bow planes as part of our quals. Now they use X Box controllers, wow. Main reason I got out was sub life can be hard on a marriage. I always make time to talk to other submariners when I see they are wearing something identifying as such. Ran into 2 different shipmates 25 and 30 years later where I live at now. Thanks to all who serve.

    Back in the 80s my family had a two week vacation on Oahu. We went to Pearl Harbor and my dad, who was an Air Force colonel, got permission for us to get a personal tour from the XO of a Los Angelas-class attack submarine over in the sub pens, the USS New York City. I still remember it today even though I was a kid back then. One thing I remember the XO telling us is that everyone on the ship had to pass a test where they had to wear a blacked-out hood and make their way from one end of the ship to other based solely on feel and memory of the ship layout. Idea was in the event of fire and smoke obstructing vision, you needed to know how to navigate ship without sight.

    Being an Air Force Vietnam veteran I truly appreciate what the Navy offers as team members on the same side. My hats off to the submarine service, especially. Though my work was highly restrictive (security wise) these onboard sailors may do the same but in a physically restrictive close quarters manner and dependent upon the engineering and mechanics to keep them alive. Even in peacetime; I couldn’t imagine when under war conditions. For this I commend them all and offer my gratitude for their unique service. 🇺🇸

    My time in the Navy was spent in a seaplane patrol squadron based in San Diego and the far east. The only time I was ever on a sub was a tour of the USS Clamagore, an old submarine that was moored at Patriots Point, SC. Forget about serving on a sub if you have claustrophobia. While touring the Clamagore I couldn’t wait to get off as my claustrophobia kicked in. Just watching the guy in this video crawl through a torpedo tube all the way to the end had me breathing heavy. Much respect and admiration to the guys and gals that serve on these “boats” as they’re pretty much considered close to the top of the Navy elite food chain. Well done video.

It's a beautiful place but remembering the past and looking around and seeing the same places that were being attacked in 1941 was definitely a bit unsettling. I was assigned there in 1975 & 1976. Even before I was assigned to a ship that was home ported there I read a lot of history regarding that attack and the period before December 7, 1941. You mentioned how good it smelled in the cafeteria. They make sure to feed the crew well as part of keeping morale up while out to sea. With so many people locked into a tube underwater they look for ways to keep peoples spirits up, and keeping them full and gastro-intestinally satisfied is one way they do it. Basically the best food in the Navy is found on these nuclear subs.

    I served on three different submarines of the same class. I was on the USS Kentucky SSBN 737(Blue crew) from 1993-1997 and did seven patrols on her. I was on the USS West Virginia SSBN 736(Gold crew) from 2000-2004 and did seven patrols on her. The I served on the USS Wyoming SSBN 742(Gold crew) from 2008-2010 and did four patrols on her. The longest time I did under water was 109 days underwater. We popped to the surface, bumped the pier did a stores reload and went right back out for another 11 days. The shortest patrol I've done was 76 days. Almost every patrol I did was an extended patrol to cover another submarines patrol order so they could do a medical evacuation or a repair on their sub. If I could, I would do it again. I did 20 years between 1992 and 2012. 20 years and 18 days.

    As a former surface sailor there are two types of ships in the Navy…. Submarines and Targets!

    That was very interesting and I learned a lot. I give you a lot of credit for going into tight spaces. And you got to sign your name 👏 👏 Wow! Loved the movie insert. 😊Very proud of all who served our country to keep us all safe. Thanks Terry for taking us along.

    8:50 I heard of a guy that tried to use a gaming controller to pilot a sub…. Didn’t work out well.

    How awesome they allowed you into a torpedo tube! Even cooler they let you go all "Green Monster" and sign the end of the tube! Green Monster - Fenway Park reference.
    To all those serving and have served - Thanks for your service!
    I've kinda been on the late 1700's equivalent. USS Constitution. I was almost too tall to walk through it when I was in the 5th grade. Short people back then in the 18th Century.

    American Submarines have always been the best and always will be. They broke and made records-First nuclear powered ship, first underwater around the world, and first under the ice among others. This submarine is one of the latest and most advanced in the world, at least until the United States commissions another class. Thanks for the tour and a shout out to all U.S. Navy Submariners.❤

      No disrespect to US submariners, but it's widely known that the first functional submarine was designed and built by a Dutchman, Cornelis Drebbell in 1620, 156 years before America even existed.
