Hi Alice, This is Dave who drove the "Going to the Sun Road" 5 times. My 2 brothers and I hiked Mt. Elbert in the Summer time. It was beautiful scenery.
When I was a kid my dad would take me camping every summer. Our last camping trip together was at Twin Lakes when I was 17 in August of 1992. We attempted to take our mountain bikes to the summit. We had to walk our bikes on the steeper parts. Thunderstorms forced us to turn around before we reached the summit. At that time I had no idea it was my last camping trip with my dad. For 29 years I have been hoping to return to make the summit and camp with my dad again. I am running out of time. I hope I make it someday.
I thought you looked familiar. Saw you hiking your first 14er here in Colorado on Long's Peak. These are the days we all have to endure whether we like it or not. I hope we don't loose this country. I have always loved my mountains here in Colorado, but who knows what our future holds, just need to go off grid and enjoy what nature has to offer. Hiked Elbert 07-13 97 and there was still a lot of snow on top then as well. Most of my 14ers have been solo. Smart to know when to call it quits for the day. Glad you got to enjoy your adventure.
From a busy and toxic week days...Hiking and trekking on hills and mountain really release all stressful days. Thank you so much for sharing..👌 Take care and be safe always 💕🙏
There is an extraordinary happening occuring. Just 2 days ago I thought of hiking Longs Peak, in Colorado, since it's been 30 plus years and before I can't I really felt the spirit moving me to be there, No sooner had I mentioned to someone Allice Ford shows up on my youtube site showing me her solo cllimb past the key hole and the narrows. It is so breathtaking to make it to the top where Jets fly it seems just a few mile above! While I mentally plan and prepare, I went out to a beautiful hike here in Payson arizona that nature is such a healing companion, no matter what! One gets lifted to the heights that nature is stemmed from!
Yes!! I love seeing other hikers so overjoyed to be out exploring our beautiful Earth. Also, hiking is just as much about knowing when to turn around as it is about getting to that summit 😊 -E

Since I'm new here, I get to "binge watch" (as time permits) some of your many adventures! Stay safe out there and thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you for creating this video and sharing your message! So important to show that it's okay to turn around and that safety trumps a summit! Also loved the serendipity of your meeting the snowshoer. Sending you love and happy trails from a fellow female hiker. Keep on trekking.
Wow, Alice! I was glued to this video. It was so beautiful! Smart thing to call the summit where you did and so cool you found a partner on your solo journey. Hey, we need others at certain times in our lives, and he showed up at the right time. And sounds like the right time for him, too. Loved the video so much. Great job, Alice!
You did right turning around. Safety first! My first attempt we had a party of 6. One in the group was struggling and was really slow. When we reached the crest (around 13,700) we saw some clouds rolling in. We all sat and ate our lunch to decide as a group what to do. It was a difficult decision for me because I felt great and we were so close. However, for the safety of the team we decided to descend. I’m glad we did because 15 minutes later lightning bolts were hitting the mountain, hail, sleet and rain. It was terrifying. We were completely exposed and 2 team members were injured. If we had continued on it would have been bad. It took us a really long time to hike back down because of those that were injured. 3 of us drove all the way back 2 weeks later and summited lol. I drove from Missouri and I could t handle driving all that way and not summit so I had to drive back and conquer that beast lol.
Sitting here at Denver Airport. We just made our attempt 2 days ago. We made it just at 13500 before turning around after getting hit with 70 mph winds in complete white out. It was stunning. but we will return. Airline messed up the booking so we ended up getting a 500 dollar voucher to fly anywhere! So thats a positive! Cant wait to get back and tackle Elbert again! Amazing video. Bitter sweet watching right now and preparing to leave Colorado. Cant wait to see the summit video!!
I've reached this summit back in 99 and I'm very moved to hear you talking about the ones who are connected to these mountains for a very long time! It seems to me that you can sense the spirits up there, because you have a very open heart, Alice. And maybe the wooden sticks instead of aluminum-plastic ones helped too ... Let the mountain lion guide you!
Thank you. I like to think that I am connected to the spirits and the animals as well. One wooden stick sacrificed itself to help me out of the snow. The other I kept and will bring with me on another climb, perhaps when I try for Elbert again. :)
@@AliceFordAdventures Yes, you definitely are! And therefor I love to listen to your adventures! Wonderful idea, bring back the stick and maybe you'll see!
Enjoyed your video. Planning to go to Colorado next year July and attempt Mt Huron, Grays and Torreys, and Elbert. Did Pikes Peak via Craggs this year. Loved it!
Anytime you come off a mountain alive and uninjured, it's a successful climb! I had to pull off of Ellingwood Point last September feet away from ridgeline because a record setting snow storm started to hit. What makes me happy? Mountains and sleeping in nature. especially, in my hammock! Yesterday I got off work early and headed straight for the woods to camp. Next holiday weekend, heading to Southern Illinois for a memorial day backpacking trip!

Wow, Alice, I did not realize you were solo, yikes. I guess I'm not really one to talk but that was a risky move for a winter climb. . .glad you had your in-reach.
Wow! Nobody can say that you're not adventurous. That's a pretty extreme elevation you were shooting for, in the snow, without snowshoes. Thanks for sharing the great vistas and dialog to go along with the trek. You're making me even more excited for my hikes a little later this year in Colorado.
Beautiful views up there. Thanks for sharing. Hiking has a lot to do with the folks we randomly meet on the trail. When it comes to winter and snow, lots of it, being Canadian 🇨🇦 I know a thing or two about the climate: Never trust a perfect day in the cold, be prepared, wear layers and stay on track. When the wind picks up, visibility becomes nil and then trouble starts happening.
I love how almost anything I try or travel to, Alice has been there. I'll be in Colorado this weekend and found a sweet airbnb in Leadville. I've got a few things to possibly do, depending on weather. We'll see about Elbert...
@@AliceFordAdventures Will do! I don't know much about Colorado weather except that it is extremely varied and fast. I'll take what the weather gives me. Great video, as always!
I can’t imagine trying Elbert in the winter. I hiked it at the end of the summer several years ago and to this day it was the hardest hike I have been on. First and only 14er I have summited so far and that long dredge above the tree line was HARD! Kudos for making it as far as you did.

The snow storm part of the video made it look like you were climbing Everest. Looked so intense and scary. I would like to attempt the hike in the summer time :). Stay safe!
Wow, looks like you have a great channel! (Found you on Amos's page FYI). Trails that tall are a bit challenging. My first high altitude hike was in Mexico a few years ago, and it was a really neat experience. I think we are all getting a bit of cabin fever in this pandemic. Looks like an extra intense hike with that weather coming in! Looking forward to seeing some of your other adventures.
Wow, that really was an adventure! You gave it your best, and made the right decision! I hiked Elbert in summer of 2008. Ended up going solo because my hiking partner couldn't make it. But there were quite a few other people on the mountain that day. Such epic views. The Rockies are amazing!!!

That's beautiful. I live in a remote part of Canada so Covid hasn't affected my area all that much. One thing that made me a little depressed is I love to travel. Canada still has its borders closed, even the provincial borders. I can't travel more than 4 hours in any direction. Feel like a caged animal but I've found things to do closer to home. I am lucky to live in such a wild place.
Canada is certainly beautiful. I spent 7 months in Atlanta GA feeling the same one, but luckily the Appalachian mountains were near by for lots of hiking. Its nice to explore your home area too.
I enjoyed watching your video. Kudos making it back ok but you may want to consider avalanche gear when doing 14ers during winter conditions. There was an avalanche on Torreys Peak just last week, six hikers were in the slide. I hiked Elbert 11 years ago during summer, it was fun hike, not too bad I had kayaked Twin Lakes last summer. There are many campgrounds in the area.

The weather can vary a lot here too. I, my family, live in southeastern Finland. Here the terrain is fairly flat. The north is higher. You probably know because you’ve been in Northern Norway. My email is jkaaro@hotmail.com
Wow, what incredible views! I could not tell, did you have micro-spikes on? if not, would they have helped? I am not real experienced with winter mountaineering, but I have seen people use them in snowy conditions. It's good that you kept safe and did not try to over-extend to reach the top.
Micro spikes would not have helped I did have a pair in my pack but they are better on packed but slippery or icy trails then in deep snow. The main issue was sinking in when the snow was deep not traction.
I strongly recommend that you not hike 14ers solo in the winter. The 14er club does hikes most weekends. You have to start 14ers at dawn. I did mount quandry and we started at 6 am or 630 am. I hiked with the 14er club. We had tons of storms and snow and a blizzazrd. you always need snowshoes and micro spikes in the winter. I have done 20 fourtneners and 4 in the winters. So those are my tips. Insane to hike alone in the winter on a 14er. If you get hurt you freeze. If you get lost you freeze. If you get caught in a storm you freeze. if you getr sick you freeze.
When was this? Im going one June 8th 2021 will it be the same im from Ca and first time going to Colorado so condition please do i need chain for the car to get to the trail head?

LIFE IS ALL ABOUT STRESS AND CONQUERING YOUR FEARS.
Thank you I’m glad you are finding some inspiration. Take the grandkids ;)
Killer view 😍 👌 ✨️
Good adventure! Surely you were exhausted after that. Maybe you had pain in shoulders day after? Because that trekking pole seemed so heavy. You dont give up easily. We Finns have a word for that: sisu. Thanks for sharing your video!
I was pretty tired. Stick wasn't too bad, but a trekking pole surely would have been lighter. I plan to come hike in Finland soon.
@@AliceFordAdventures You are welcome!
E.g here is some information to come here (because covid) www.finnair.com/us-en/flight-information/travel-updates/travelling-to-finland-2166282
just ask... if you need more information about something
The weather can vary a lot here too.
I, my family, live in southeastern Finland. Here the terrain is fairly flat. The north is higher. You probably know because you’ve been in Northern Norway.

Wow! ❤️from🇵🇭..
Did you sled down going back?
When was this? Im going one June 8th 2021 will it be the same im from Ca and first time going to Colorado so condition please do i need chain for the car to get to the trail head?
April should be great June 8th. No chains needed.
That was big time. How far would it have been from your car to the actual summit ? Glad you found a hiking companion.
It was around 1 more mile to the summit from where I stopped so I guess around 14 miles
@@AliceFordAdventures Sounds like an epic hike under any condition. wise choice to turn around. cheers
I would had loved to hike with you I made summit twice
What's the name of that orange device on your shoulder
Garmin In reach Mini
@@AliceFordAdventures aha ! I knew I was looking at something pricey and well worth it !
Thank you so much!
Definitely a nice tracker when traveling alone !
@@arturocubos4077 it sure is!
@@AliceFordAdventures keep up the good work your videos are AMAZING
Footprints in the sand, or in this case "snow". "Happy the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked. Nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent." Psalm 1.
I would have expected more snow, and for sure would have packed in the snow shoes, would really be smarter to not attempt this alone.
Some people CAN..... Some people CAN'T...
Stop coming here and not inviting me to trek!
How many hours did it take for you to walk 12 miles?
On a normal day it would take me around 7 this day it took 11 hours
@@AliceFordAdventures You’re a legend. That is such a long walk
@@ELuislopez It was really long! Wait until you see my video on Rattlesnake Arches - it was 15.3 miles
Cook a better breakfast / lunch for my family. Wifey says I over- salt the eggs always...and yet she let's me do all the cooking. Hmmmmm.....
lol, well maybe wait for the salt. I love experimenting with new recipes.
After such a wonderful life affirming walk, Alice, you can't help but feel closer to those that you love. With people like yourself and Dan Rather in the US I would be positive about the future.
Thank you

You are good channel. I am also a TH-camr
I'm in love with you
If Elbert didn’t work the treaty someone else would have. The Ute would have sold it either way. Strange guilt and selective romanticism
Alice it's better for us not to carry the burden of the world you know being outdoors away from city or off-grid is the real life happiness it's freedom there's no rules only the rules of nature's and the of God.
