- Preventing tent condensation and ice buildup is a real problem camping in the winter. How do you keep dry in your tent when you are camping or climbing in cold conditions? I share a bunch of techniques to prevent condensation in tents and how to deal with condensation when it happens.

I often carry a small USB fan and run it off a power bank. In summer it circulates the air and helps with cooling and comfort. In winter, it means that you can close up the tent except for 2 small vent holes but still get good ventilation.
Set up the fan to exhaust air from a vent on one end of the tent. Intake of outside air comes from the vent at the other end and any leaky spots in the tent.
The object is to keep the temp inside the same as outside. That way you don't get condensation due to the moist warmer air inside the tent touching the cold wall of the tent.

have used a friends nemo and my 3 season coleman in 10 degree weather here in CO. great great advice. know so many people buying $400 tents thinking spending more reduces moisture and its just not true. fantastic video
I use an MlD duomid tent for winter. I want to just use it without an inner tent for weight reasons. The problem I ran into is that the condensation built up early in the night on the tent walls and then the wind picked up right after thrashing the walls and raining that frost all over me. I have a semi solid inner for the tent now and it has worked good for fall snow but I haven’t gotten it out in deep winter.
I am still learning this winter backpacking stuff. Just found your channel and it is outstanding!

Just wanted to share my experience.
We winter snowshoe camp along the often brutally cold and windy frozen shoreline of Lake Superior in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Sub zero temps and 30+ m.p.h. winds are not uncommon.
Our first year doing this, we thought it would be a good idea to pile a bunch of snow along the perimeter of the tent, to block every single place that wind could enter, thinking it would keep us warmer. BAD idea! We woke up to a SOAKED (frozen and dripping condensation) tent on the inside, which ultimately made our sleeping bags wet\frozen.
The next year we used that same 3-season tent, but this time we left the bottom of the fly ventilated. MUCH better, but not great.
The next year, and last week, we used a similar inexpensive 3-season tent, but one with more screen and a couple vents built into the fly at the top. NO condensation!
AIR FLOW is the key, and it's not really any colder because the wind is still blocked by the fly.
Contrary to what many folks might think, a summer tent works great for winter camping, so long as it has a FULL cover fly.

I just experienced this and this video is super helpful. My question is how to prevent condensation in a heavy rain which is what I experienced this past weekend. My tent is somewhat cheap and I can replace it. It only has one vent above my head. Which tents do you suggest in winter storms that are wet, frosty, and snow. Thanks for your videos

They can drive the humidity out but the temperature differential can actually cause more moisture to condense.

Here in Wales we often have low cloud with 100% humidity, sometimes with no air movement. I avoid camping by water or on damp ground (so far as possible). Does using a groundsheet of some kind make much of a difference do you think?

I wish to ask you how instal a tent in a storm.
Course, i know i shoold not be on this situation, but this can happen.
For that matter, it almost happened last summer, in a trail of the principal ridge of Fagaras Mountain (in Romania). More than 70 km ridge, in 4 days, in the moust part of the time without signal for my smartphone to check weather forecast. I was lucky enough to find an acceptable place to instal my double wal tent - Marmot Vapor 2 - right before storm to start.
So how to instal a tent if it`s start to rain before to find a good place to instal tent, because if you start to instal in a ordinary way, tent can be ful of water before you finish.

You need airflow to take the moist air(your breath) out and away.
On your review of the W.M. booties you should say what size to get or leave some data underneath the video. People say Western Mountaineering has the wrong sizing chart for booties. I wear 10-10.5 US & it's hard to tell if I should get M or S booties by searching reviews on backcountry & Amazon. Maybe I'll give you a tip on Prime Video if you know the correct size (I want to watch one anyway if I have time). I wish WM would be responsible enough to have an accurate sizing chart.
I wear 11-12 US sizes and got the large booties. Sure, if you have a lead, it's most appreciated.

Definitely no cotton sheet unless there’s some reason to do so.
I'm a tarper, tents are nicer for sure the weight savings and cost savings are huge.
