I was in the same TV-show as Hootenanny Singers in the end of the 1960's, when I was 14-15 years old. This was the 2nd time I met Björn Ulvaeus. I met him for the 3rd time 15 years ago, when I, Bjrön Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson were the main speakers at a conference about the author Vilhelm Moberg in the Royal Library in Stockholm (I spoke about "Vilhelm Moberg and the theatre", which his daughter the author Eva Moberg had asked me to do, and Björn and Benny spoke about their work on creating the musical "Kristina från Duvemåla", based on 4 of Moberg's novels).

Omkring tiggarn från Luossa is one of Dan Anderssons nirvana-poems from Black ballads (Svarta ballader). When he wrote the poem 1917 he had studied Indian philosophy of religion. He searched peace, something like a death sleep. "It's something beyond the mountain, beyond the flowers and the song, it's something beyond stars, beyond my hot heart." I hope you continue to listen to intepreters of Dan Andersson. In my opinion Thorstein Bergman is the greatest. Listen to Helgdagskväll i timmerkojan, live from Hylands hörna. You will love it!

This song is very poetic and not easy to understand for sure, but I would say it's about someone who can never find peace in life because he's always looking for something "beyond" that can only be found in heaven.
    Translation (direct, not poetic):
Around the beggar from Luossa all the people sat in a ring,
and by the campfire they heard his song.
And about beggars and roadmen, and about wonderful things,
and about his longing he sang all night long:
"There's something beyond the mountains, beyond the flowers and the song,
there's something beyond the stars, beyond my hot heart.
Hear - something is whispering, beckoning me and asks:
Come to us, for this earth is not your kingdom!
I have listened to the calm waves against the shore,
I have dreamed of the wild seas resting.
And in my spirit I have hastened towards the shapeless lands,
where the dearest things we've known will be forgotten.
To a wild and eternal longing, we were born by pale mothers,
from the birth labours our first lament rose.
We were thrown towards the mountains and fields to tumble about and play,
and we played moose and lion, butterfly, beggar and god.
If I sat quiet by her side, she, whose heart was like mine,
if she with soft hands created our nest,
I still heard my heart call, What you own isn't yours,
and I was taken away by the spirit to get peace.
What I love, it is beyond, and hidden in an obscure distance,
and my true path is high and wonderful.
And I am enticed in the midst of the noise, to pray before the Lord:
'Take all the earth away, I want to own what no one, no one has!'
Follow me, brother, beyond the mountains, with the calm cool rivers,
where all the ocean falls asleep, slowly, in a bed surrounded by mountains.
Somewhere beyond the heavens is my home, and my mother,
among the gold-spattered mists dressed in a rosy cloak.
May the black, salt waters cool the red, fevered cheeks,
may we be miles from life before the morning is full!
I wasn't of this world, and I suffered eternal struggles,
for my worries, my unfaithfulness, and my hot love.
By a seashell-strewn ocean beach stands a gate of heavy roses,
where the rotting wrecks rest and tired men are at peace.
High songs never heard before sing like the echoes of violins
under arches where, eternally young, live the children of blessedness."

I haven't been able to listen to this song without crying since my dad died, and I thought I was doing fine this time until "följ mig broder bortom bergen" when it just hit me so hard I had to sit down and bawl my eyes out for a while. It's not even as if my dad ever mentioned this song or that it brings up any particular memory, it's just so powerful in itself somehow. 😭

You haven't done the Knife yet either: Heartbeats, Pass this on and Silent Shout Are their most famous songs. What's extra fun about The Knife is that it's underground/indie electronic music, which normally reaches a rather narrow audience, but they managed to reach a wider mass and there's something Swedish about that that type of music can succeed and become very popular here..

Sofia Karlsson sings Dan Andersson very well. I've heard her sing him live and it was a wonderful concert. But for me no one beats Thorstein Bergman's interpretations. In my opinion his album "Dan Andersson" is one of the best Swedish albums ever made (though of course you can't _really_ make such a claim as that would mean comparing so many different musical genres).

This is old poetry language and not easy to understand for any of us - but it is beautiful and you can sort of get the essence of it even though you don't understand every word. It is the same thing with many of our well known songs and hymns.
This song is beautiful and has been stuck in my head since I heard your reaction yesterday.

  • @rasmuswi
    @rasmuswi ปีที่แล้ว +3

This song has the most beautiful Swedish words I I know. There is something about several of Dan Anderssons poems that kind of takes me on an imaginary tour around the Swedish wilderness. The smell of the pine trees, the rapids, the mountains. The music kind of plays second fiddle in this song. But I can see how it can be a bit like a Swede reading Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley for the first time.

It's not strange that you think of Ted Gärdestad, because he recorded his albums in the same studio at the same time and with more or less the same studio musicians for the same record label Polar. And as others have already mentioned, the lead singer is Björn Ulveaus from ABBA, who also produced Ted Gärdestad's albums together with Benny Andersson (who I am quite sure plays the piano on this track, since Hootenanny Singers didn't have any pianist).

I'm not surprised that you don't follow that lyric, as it's difficult even for a native Swede. Here is a translation, but I would say that it is a slightly simplified translation, where more difficult/older Swedish words have been replaced by simpler/newer English.
    Around the Beggar From Luossa
    :
Around the beggar from Luossa, all the people sat in a circle,
and by the campfire they heard his song.
And about mendicants1 and highwaymen and about wonderful things,
and about his longing, he sang all night long:

"There is something beyond the mountains, beyond the flowers and the song,
there is something behind the stars, behind my passionate heart.
Hear - something's going around whispering, going tempting me and asking:
Come to us, for this earth, it is not your realm!

I have listened to the quiet4 surf against the shore,
I have dreamed of the wild seas' rest.
And in my spirit I have flitted towards the shapeless lands,
where that which was dearest to us shall be forgotten.

To a wild and eternal longing we were born by pale mothers,
out of the worries' birth pains, our first wail rose
We were thrown6 on mountains and plains to tumble about and play,
and we played elk7 and lion, butterfly, beggar and god.

I sat quietly by her side, she, whose heart was like mine,
with soft hands she tenderly8 made our home,
I heard my heart call out, what you own is not yours,
and I was carried away by my spirit to find peace.

What I love, it is beyond and hidden in an obscure faraway land,
and my true path is high and wonderful.9
And I am tempted, in the midst of the alarm, to pray before the Lord:
'Take away all of the earth, I want to own what no one, no one has!'

Follow me, brother, beyond the mountains, with the still, cool, rivers,
where all of the sea slowly falls asleep within a mountain-wreathed bed.
Somewhere beyond the sky is my home, (there) I have my mother,
in the midst of goldsprinkled mists, clad in a rosen cloak.

May the black briny waters cool fevery red cheeks,
may we be miles and miles13from life before the morning is full!
I was not of this world, and I suffered eternal hardships
for my worry, my disbelief, and my passionate love's sake.

By a shell-strewn seashore stands a gate of heavy roses,
where the wrecks rot at rest and the tired men find peace.
Never heard high songs sing like the echoes of violins
under vaults where eternally young children of beatitudelive."

Round the beggar from Luossa people gathered in a ring,
by the campfire they sat and heard his song.
And of wayfarers and mendicants and every wondrous thing
and of his longing he sang to them all night long.
“There is something beyond mountains, beyond flowers, beyond singing,
there is something there behind the star, behind my burning heart.
Hearken, something goes there whispering, goes there calling me and praying
‘come to us, for of this earthly kingdom you are not a part.’
I have listened to the tranquil waves that roll against the beach,
to dream of wild seas’ rest has been my lot.
And in spirit I have hastened towards the formless lands
where the dearest thing we knew shall be forgot.
To a wild, eternal longing we were born by pallid mothers,
from the labour pains of troubles rose our first and anguished cry.
We were thrown on plains and mountains then, to play with all our brothers,
and we played there elk and lion, beggar, god and butterfly.
I sat silent by her side, she whose heart was like to mine,
with hands so soft she tended to our nest.
But I heard my heart then calling: ‘what thou ownest is not thine’
and the spirit came and bore me off to rest.
What I love is far away beyond, concealed in distant darkness,
and high and wonderful is my true way.
And amid this clamour I am called to pray before the Heavens:
What no-one has I want to own, take all the earth away!
Follow, brother, beyond mountains, to the cool and peaceful rivers,
where in beds of mountain garlands all sea slowly goes to sleep.
Somewhere there beyond the heavens is my home, I have my mother,
in the golden-sprinkled mists, dressed in rosy mantle deep.
May the black and salty waters cool the cheeks that burn with fever,
let’s be miles away from life before the morning breaks above!
Not of this world was I, brother; hardships without end I suffered
for the sake of worries, faithlessness and of my burning love.
By a shore all dressed in seashells stands a gate of roses heavy,
therein sleep the mouldered shipwrecks, and the tired men find rest.
Songs unheard and high there sing like violins in distant echoes
under arches where eternal children live forever blessed.
Thats the translation to English lingo!

You will get a lot of different translations but I think I agree with Göran Greider that it can be interpreted in different ways.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omkring_tiggarn_fr%C3%A5n_Luossa
Here are some direct translations of some of the more difficult words.
Hören - the old plural "hear ye" or "listen"
    Vägmän - highwaymen
    Bettlare - travelling salespeople
    Ting - things
    Bortom - beyond
Beder - also the old form "prays" or "asks"
Icke - old form for inte - "not"
Riket - kingdom, I feel this poem has a very religious language. Think "thy kingdom come".
    Böljeslag - waves

Thorstein Bergman sjunger Dan Andersson bäst av alla.

Den här versionen är ett rent jävla helgerån. Men Thorstein Bergmans version är fantastisk.

Dont give a Dan Andersson to Hootenanny singers and Bjorn From Abba. They revived it but they have nothing to do with the oregin of it..Its a travellers song,or a gipsie tune...so please let them get the creed!

It is a Christian song. About a later day prophet. Not their usually style at all.

😴 Tråkig! ...och så dansbands-reverb på det. Hela soundet var dansband. 👎 Kommentarerna här önskar så mycket Björn & Benny att kanalen snart får byta namn till ”Did you know it’s Björn och Benny from Abba?!”
