How to Ask Fast and Natural Sounding Questions in English

  • You've probably learned by now that spoken English is a bit different than written English. As you learn English, you learn how to write it properly, and how to speak it slowly. Native English speakers tend to compress their sentences though when they speak at a normal rate. Sometimes a whole sentence sounds like one long word!
In this English lesson I'll go over the common, proper structure for forming questions, and then I'll let you know how I would actually say these in a regular English conversation. I'll be sure to give you the format for questions starting with: Where, What, How, Why, and When. Even though these questions will be about a trip, they can be adapted for any situation.
So take the time to enjoy this free English class. Watch it a few times and try to shadow me (repeat after me) when I ask the questions and give the responses so that you can train yourself to sound a bit more natural when having an English conversation.
    Have a great day!
⌛ Remember: Always watch the video three times. Twice today with English subtitles on, and once tomorrow with the English subtitles off. This will reinforce the English you have learned!

Our school is actually planning trips for June (Ottawa and Algonquin Park), but no teachers are volunteering to go. I think we've all been worn down because whenever we plan something the rug gets pulled out from under us a week before.

    Hi Bob,
This lesson is very helpful as usual and thanks so much for that.
You're totally right when you say that most of the languages have shortened sentences, for instance in French to improve your natural French :
There lotta people here! (Is that correct?)
Written : Il y a beaucoup de monde ici !
Fast spoken : Y'a beaucoup de monde ici !
There’ll be a surprise! (Is that correct?)
Written : Il y aura une surprise !
    Fast spoken : Y'aura une surprise !
There was no more room for t’concert! (Is that correct?)
Written : Il n'y avait plus de place pour le concert !
Fast spoken : Y'avait plus de place pour le concert ! (the " n' " is dropped)
Ya've been t’the hairdresser, haven't ya? (Is that correct?)
Written : Tu as été chez le coiffeur , n'est-ce pas ?
Fast spoken : T'as été chez le coiffeur, n'est-ce pas ?
Ya left late! (Is that correct?)
Written : Tu es parti tard !
    Fast spoken : T'es parti tard !
When’re ya goin’ ? (Is that correct?)
    Written : Tu y vas quand ?
    Fast spoken : T'y vas quand ?
When’dya arrive ? (Is that correct?)
Written : Tu arrives quand ?
    Fast spoken : T'arrives quand ?
    I'm hurrying !
Written : Je me dépêche !
    Fast spoken : J'me dépêche !
This isn't what I mean ! (Is that correct?)
Written : Ce n'est pas ce que je veux dire !
    Fast spoken : C'est pas c'que j'veux dire ! (the " n' " is dropped)
    And so on.....
All the best and happy to seeya in good shape!
