I always have this debate in my head that can't ever decide whether it is Chopin or Liszt. I personally used to think it was Chopin but after exploring Liszt and playing some of his pieces I realized how expressive some of his works really were.

Not surprisingly, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Rachmaninoff stand out way above the crowd in beauty of music, originality, quality and virtuosity. On the flip side, you have Liszt who was not a natural and worked hard to look natural but could not hide his Germanic subservience, and yet the two pieces here (Liebesträume, Consolations) are among only handful of decent works he composed out of more than 1000 compositions.
About Liszt? Unlike Chopin or Tchaikovsky, Liszt did not possess musical talents borne in his heart and soul and was more concerned about mundane goals and used his musical skills as a means to achieve them. He practiced 14 hours per day to hone his piano skills and composed and played unattractive elaborate pieces to appear like a "Wunderkind". Tchaikovsky was not impressed by Liszt, even though Liszt had admired his music. In fact, Tchaikovsky was never fond of Liszt's music.
this is a weird comment. Liszt as a guy is not the music he wrote, and the music he wrote was and still is often breathtaking. Liszt wasn't Chopin or Tchaikovsky. Very few people are. And yet, Liszt's works were revolutionary from technique (obviously) to his handling of dissonance, where his harmonies were highly chromatic in his early work, to almost atonal in his late works. His melodies are great, especially when he let his lyrical side show, and his treatment of the keyboard as orchestral was brilliant. that's my defense
