  • I See His Blood Upon The Rose
A poem by Joseph Mary Plunkett
Set to music and performed by Owen C Lynch
Joseph Mary Plunkett was an Irish nationalist, poet, journalist and leader of the 1916 Easter Rising. He was one of the original members of the IRB Military Committee that was responsible for planing the Rising and it was largely his plan that was followed.
Following the surrender, Plunkett was held in Kilmainham Gaol and faced a court martial. Seven hours before his execution by firing squad at the age of 28, he was married to his sweetheart Grace Gifford, a protestant convert to Catholicism. He is laid to rest alongside Patrick Pearse & James Connolly in the military cemetery at Arbour Hill in Dublin. This military cemetery is the burial place of 14 of the executed leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising.
The poems of Joseph Mary Plunkett were published in 1916. The poet's sister Geraldine Plunkett acted as editor.
I See His Blood Upon The Rose remains one of his most celebrated works.

Thank you. Beautiful words, melody and voice.
I’m now hearing and experiencing this poem very differently than 40 years ago in school. I recall being very upset by the first line, “ I see his blood upon the rose 0:10 ”. I was very emotional about this line, I do not recall going further. The blood on the rose, I saw it, the vivid imagery representing the absolute cruelties of the crucifixion of Jesus and the execution of Joseph Mary Plunkett and the others who were martyrs of 1916. I visited his Kilmainham jail cell aged 11, before I learned the poem. I got the connection of how they paralleled their sacrifices- all of which were ultimately for my benefit. Today, that first line was looping in my head- the prompt was looking up St Patrick’s Day events. The poem now speaks to me in it’s solemn and naive beauty, the connection of God- in all things and in all places as a way of seeing the Highest Power of the Universe in all of nature and this young man’s very beautiful and giving nature and his commitment to sacrifice for his truest ideals. He and others made huge sacrifices well before their lives were ever taken. And here we have the Ireland of today… holding this discomfort, I will lean into this poem.
There is a very good book about the Gifford Sisters. It is a very sad story. It shows the interference and power of the Catholic Church, where they pushed ahead with poor decisions in the life of this family. The faith that a tragically orphaned child would be raised in superseded their family bonds and need for the most basic of comforts.
