  • Learned this one from Annie Briggs and Steele Eye Span recordings.
It originally came out of Keady in south Armagh.

I think my original comment was cut out because it was too long or because it referenced other sites. Anyway, this is a fab version with beautifully plaintive vocals that fit the spirit of the song perfectly. There is a long thread on Mudcat which gives a lot of detail regarding the origins of the song, which relates to a hare hunt in Granemore in the 30s. Many of the people referred to were real, and the song was probably first played in Toner's house. In the Irish variant of hare hunting the death of the hare was not desired, and dogs have been muzzled since the 1990s in (legal) hare hunts in Ireland. The Mudcat article has the original complete lyrics, and Josephemcmahon is correct that it's 'boys' and 'Granemore'. Steeleye has 'Greenmore' and Terry sings that. Al O'Donnell has 'Granemore' and it's a great version (although not, IMO as good as this one).

It's a South Armagh song but the words have got corrupted. It's the boys of Maydown (not 'the town') and Granemore. Lovely singing though
