  • Apple has been producing iPhones in Zhengzhou, China for as long as anyone can remember. The city has even been dubbed ‘iPhone City’ because it houses a factory that can accommodate up to 300,000 workers, who all work on Apple products. This single factory produces around half of the world’s iPhones, one of which is probably one that you own. The factory can produce around 500,000 phones in a day, or 350 a minute, and that’s due to the extremely harsh working conditions that employees are subject to there.
In China, poor labour practices in pursuit of higher productivity is often the norm. iPhone City is no exception, and there have already been several scandals pertaining to this particular factory regarding its harsh work conditions and inhumane hours. In early 2018, a factory worker named Li Ming committed suicide on factory property, sparking concerns regarding Foxconn’s work environment. This has led to continuous controversy regarding Apple’s usage of Foxconn factories, and now, it seems that they are finally pulling the plug.
