- Most people come to Trinidad to work on their boats and it's a great place for that. But if you haul out here don't miss the opportunity to hire a car and visit the interior of this fabulous island.
In this weeks episode we haul the boat out and get on with the ever present list of boat jobs, but also take take time to hike up some amazing waterfalls, take a trip through the mangrove swamps to see some incredible wildlife and visit a garden in the mountains to see the hummingbirds.

What a beautiful place. One of the humming birds (about 13:40) seems to have learnt that you might as well use a perch whilst drinking the nectar. Perhaps it's common but I've only ever seen them remain in flight whilst drinking. Perhaps they're adapting!
yes a few were doing it a lot on the feeders, I think you're right, they learn it.

Amazing Hummingbirds and Ibis. We have 3 good news stories with one insurer. They are not all bad but, I think one has to remember insurers are basically gamblers. They will do what they can to change the odd's in their favor. Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid. xx
That bit of film with the Humingbird flying in front of a big grinning face was fantastic. Also remember always wear cheap shoes on a hike in hot climates they will get goosed.

Loved this vlog edition. Have you seen Ken and Aquarius in the yard. He is there doing repairs and getting "new spars". He had to buy a damaged Super Maramu 2000 to get the spars he needs.

I’ve had the great fortune to see the return of the Scarlet Ibis to Caroni Swamp. A sight to behold. It’s said they return to the same tree branch every day and there’s a pecking order based on seniority.
The hummingbird house is immersive to the point where it becomes ho hum!😂 Those birds def know where their bread is buttered.

Another excellent show, different seeing such lush green vegetation in your video. Im just about to put out our humming bird feeders in MA USA, they migrate over 1000miles to get here.

My friend paints her Max-Prop with several coats of egg white! It works well on the west coast of Scotland. Maybe it would work in other waters? Bill
Very interesting, sadly about 2 hours too late! I couldn't get any Velox here and a tin of Prop speed (which I used years ago but didn't think it worked that well) was £546! So I ended up polishing it up as best I could and putting on some Lanoline which is the home remedy I knew of. Hopefully now we're in the tropics and swimming every day I can keep it clean easily so one of these home remedies will work!

I used to feed them in brown wood tx. Usa , I immediately noticed how aggressive they were and eventually quit feeding them and let them go back to their natural habitat

A few winters ago we had 50ish humming birds at our feeders in the winter (Vancouver Island) but they sprayed the trees for some kind of moth and we are down to about 10 any more.
Insurance, that thing you pay for but never use.... Most ports here require it for anything bigger than a dinghy. But even if you loose the boat, getting anything for it is well less than what I pay for insurance. At least it would take care of cleanup if it sunk at dock or ended up on a beach.... two things I expect never to happen :)

Great video, sorry we did not meet in Porto Santo! Sailing to Brazil is not what we expected, economically independent, growing all their own food, including coffee and cocoa, producing oil, having a self-sufficient mind set. This country has a future. Here is an anchorage (S12.58, W38.30) in Salvador off the Port Captain's Office, adjacent to a small marina, paying $100 per month, accessing all their facilities like showers and laundry service. Just be careful, respectfully suggesting no night-time excursions from this anchorage.

If you going with portable panels or flexible panels Cigs from BougeRV Yuma panels are the way. They last 5x longer than others. 100w and 200w flexible panels that can be glued on or screwed on. Only panel worth its weight for light weight panels.

Glad you found insurance you're happy with. As we told you in Annapolis (great meeting you BTW), we've been getting turned down right and left. If the boat isn't too old [Jo Beth is a 1984 hull) or too small (34') then they want us to have 1-2 crew to cross the Atlantic with us - and there's no room for that. We can't wait until we get across the pond to secure a policy, because insurers look at that as a gap in coverage which is another deal-breaker. At this point we are happy to be self-insured, but if we want to get a long-term berth or haul out in the UK we must have at least liability (3rd party). We have one Lloyds agent in the UK that is willing to insure us, but the cost is more than twice what our US/CA coverage costs currently. We're still hoping to make the crossing in 2025 and will save up for it.
It's a weird situation where insurance companies seem to get all het up when you're sailing too far from the waters of the country the boat is flagged in, or where the crew is from... not completely sure which it is. But Pananius were pretty up front about saying the ridiculous quote they gave us this side of the Atlantic was because they thought if there was a problem we would need to ship the boat to the UK. Why would they think that? dont they know there are shipyards everywhere,? We're in a very good one in Trinidad at the moment. We will try and get an interview with brokers to see what the hell they are thinking and why they are making it so difficult for cruisers. Surly the guys that are out there crossing oceans should be more experienced and therefore less of a risk than weekend sailors?

It's a 3 or 4 hour drive from here & to be completely honest we're finding it difficult to work up the enthusiasm to drive that far to look at liquid tar mac! Are we missing something???
It's funny I'm watching your video when just to my left is about twenty hummingbirds all day, until the evening when there's at least 80. They aren't that angry. A male will try to claim the feeders as his, but after a while he gives up. The males will annoy each other and the females, but they'll always leave pregnant females and young fledglings alone. In the evening when they're filling up the tank for the night, they're all chill.
When one gets in the house I toss a black t shirt to snare them. They look dead, mangled wings. (The first time you feel terrible.) Soon as they see the sky zoom they're gone. They remember individual people. When I used to read on my porch a lot, whenever I was anywhere outside on our hill or in my back yard they'd buzz in close. And if I'm in the yard the ones I snared and took out of the house a day or two before, will usually come by and hang out a bit watching me. One guy was in my kitchen for over an hour. I opened up the t shirt near the feeder; he just hopped over.
Even with all the free sugar water, they still visit every flower, even tiny ones on the rosemary. From the feeders to the flowers.
If you ever see a hummingbird that seems weak, sugar water, just mix it up. Poke a hole in a piece of paper and they'll know what to do. They don't seem to understand the concept of 'bowl' or 'cup' or 'puddle.' The clock is ticking.
That's really interesting that they need a small hole to put their beak through to access the sugar solution

The panel that had the broken cable was actually from Allpowers. The Bifacial one is Ecoflow and is good quality. It's our fault it got cracked the wind got under it at flipped it over and it hit the winch. I actually didn't realise the bottom side was glass so my bad.

We haven't approached it like that. We spend as much time cutting power consumption as making sure we get enough in. LED lights, efficient fridge and freezer, making sure everything charges by 12v so we virtually never need to use an inverter... in fact because the Starlink needs mains I am now fitting a small hyper efficient inverter specifically for it. I've just fitted a very good DC fan in the bedroom too so we don't have to use a mains one.
Steve, good boat insurance company, you must be kidding me. If not what company, and what cost coverage?
They are called Velos, I was impressed as they didn't ask stupid questions or have a tick box method to come up with a random quote. After listening and understanding what we had done with the boat they didnt want us to spend a thousand bucks on a needless survey and their quote was significantly lower than anything else we have had from people who don't understand us or our boat, so we are happy :)

Unfortunately, Velo website doesn't seem to to offer sailboat pleasure craft insurance to Canadian vessels. Clicking on "get a quote" brings up commercial and marine trade only UK and Holland. Thanks for trying. Billy
Yes it’s one of the problems, insurance companies being country specific even though they are covering the world. Oddly Pantanious who pride themselves at being the most worldwide of the bunch were the worst offenders, they have a US branch but because we are British flagged would pass us back to the UK who seemed to think our quote should be sky high because if something happened we would need to ship the boat back to England! Can’t make this stuff up!

Fabulous film. Loved the hummin bird bit. I wish I was on my travels already. I noticed that you have a combination of bolts and rivets for your solar arch. Was there a reason you mixed and matched?
The only river is on the big 2 inch arch & they were put in by the guy who fabricated it in Spain. All the joints I've used have grub screws or bolts. There's pluses and minuses to both. The main point is if you're using grub screws in the joints for the smaller tubing drill an indent into the pipe in the correct place so the grub screw has something to sit in, and use locktite.

Well if that was the bar next to the travel lift then yes. Its a bar and resturant, there's also a shop selling all the basics and the 'Roti hut' which does food at lunchtime and provides somewhere for cruisers to have a BBQ in the evening. It's pretty well set up here.

I would have liked to have had more natural sound but there was a group of about 12 of us in the garden so most had chatter on it unfortunately.

@@svfairisle Thanks for the boat ins ref. As far as the time goes, the thought was to time that Scarlet Ibis and Flamingo gathering. We have them both on rare occasions here in Florida, like in the Everglades and some other places off the beating path, but it's only just 1-4 birds total at a time.
@@podocrypto6072 We just caught the end of it here as the Ibis are starting to nest so there won’t be as many in the roost for a while. Ravi said they do have them year round now though in varying numbers, whereas they used to migrate for a time in the middle of summer
