I remember loving this game when it came out simply because I felt like I had no other options on my new Nintendo DS. It was refreshing and I enjoyed it, but once again, I can’t disagree with your critique. The game gives you an illusion of choice. The story is nothing special. It truly is pretty forgettable, but I am thankful for it none the less.
I hope you end up reviewing V soon. I never could stick with that one all the way through, because the PS ports were god awful to me. I’m not sure whether or not it’ll be worth purchasing on steam now that it’s been “updated”.
I also hope you end up reviewing Bravely Default, as I quit the game half way through and have a heavy criticism of it. I’ve also never played Four Heroes of Light, so I hope that makes it to your to-do list.
As always, great job and keep up the good work.

Woow you really marathoned these things? lol. Well thank you very much, it means a lot to me.
FFV will be soon. I've completed my first playthrough of it (As you've likely seen I tend to play every available version before making these videos). The After Years will be coming first (Script is almost done)... also Chrono Trigger is a thing that is happening.. a video I've been working on for far.. far too long. It's going to be about an hour and a half long... yeah...
Bravely default is a game I don't plan on covering for a few reasons: The first and biggest is that I don't have a way to record it. I can capture DS through Emulation, but I cannot capture 3DS... and getting a capture card is WAY out of my price range (My Price range right now is about... 50 cents of spendable income lol). The other reason is.. I don't like Bravely Default. Really wanted to like it.. but I don't. I don't think the turn banking system works.. at all. It was way too grindy (even with the alterations to grinding you could set up manually) And that freakin'... mid-way point 'twist' which makes you repeat all the same gameplay content over and over again makes me absolutely detest it. I couldn't beat it. I have no desire to beat it. The only thing I like about the game is Edea. "Mrgrgrrrr!!!"
Four Heroes I do plan on covering because it is a Final Fantasy game.. but I share much the same opinion of it as I do Bravely Default, except 4 Heros I remember being even sloppier in its execution. I felt like most battles were determined by luck, not skill. Though it's been years since I've played it.

I did, haha. I've been TH-cam binging on my days off, because I haven't found the motivation to play video games myself. Some sort of weird, asinine guilt trip I'm putting myself through.
Fair enough. I only got about halfway through V and I don't plan on ever picking it up again, to be honest. I have mixed feelings about The After Years. On one hand, I love everything FFIV, but on the other, I just felt it to be an unnecessary addition. A "cash grab DLC", if you will. Not really a real game to me. I actually ended up getting stuck at one point in the game and had to use a walkthrough. I progressed a little further and then stopped.
Oh my god, that's exactly how I feel about Bravely Default. I got to Edea's homeland and asked google if the game gets any better. It said no. I was disappoint. It just...sucks. Great idea on paper, painfully bad execution. I felt like half the classes were worthless and the grind was just way too much. Edea's angry retorts were literally the only part of the story worth listening to.
Welp, guess I'll go ahead and skip that title too. Shame. I may end up picking up FFXII Zodiac Age on Steam. It's the only pre-15 Final Fantasy I've yet to play. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to respond and carry a conversation. It's not often I get to nerd out.

I know this video is a little old but this was a wonderfully in-depth mechanical review of this game, and I think possibly the only one that actually opted to use footage and discuss differences from the remake in HD on youtube. Just found your channel through these FF Series Synopsis videos (which I'm working through in order) and I'm really enjoying it. Definitely my favorite review of FF3 to date, and I appreciate that you opt to look at the remakes and use footage from them in general when SO MANY channels just default to the original NES versions for footage. These remakes are just way easier on the eyes. Anyway, great video again. You've earned a sub from me!

Thanks so much for watching and subscribing, it means a lot! My first two FF videos were a little rough, but i think this one is where I really hit my stride.. and my quality has been increasing ever since. My FFIV and recently released After Years videos are some of the ones I'm most proud of, so I really hope you continue to enjoy the work!

If I'm being honest Stiles. I thought the original 8 bit was much more superior. Since 8 bit technology was still kinda basic. And seeing them port it on the DS but with not really fleshing out the story felt inferior.
Also I've listened to the soundtrack on 8 bit and it's vastly superior from FF 1 and 2.
I think perhaps that could have done a better job remaking it.
Also the NES version is much more easier and forgiven than the DS.
I just thought I tell you this since I've played it twice, and I don't think you have played it yet

Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Since then i have fully played the NES version as well, and though the DS version has some great upgrades (better balanced jobs, more technologivslly impressive graphics) I too think the NES version is the superior version. In fact it still hoods up remarkably well given its an NES rpg... doesnt have much filler, menus arent cumbersome.., its easily one of the best rpgs for the system!

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Tom Ffrench That is an incredibly difficult question to answer. I still prefer FFI to FFIII on the NES. Part of that is just my fondness for FFI in general. FFIII on NES is fun, and likely is seen as the better game by those whom have played it on NES: It is far less buggy than it's predecessor, has lots of quality of life updates, and just has a lot more going on, but it's impossible for me to remove my own biases and the context of having played all the other FF games before that one, so FFIII still doesn't seem special to me, despite it likely being a standout title for its time.
Also me saying FFIII on NES is one of the better NES RPGs is less a compliment about FFIII and more an admission that most NES RPGs aren't all that interesting to me (at least the ones that got released officially in english, of course there's a huge amount of other fan translated NES RPGs I've yet to play). Sweet Home, which I recently reviewed, is the best NES RPG I've played by far, so that might be worth a look, especially since it's only about 10 hours long.

I'm gonna say this: I HAAATE the remake and wish we had access to a more true-to-the-original version. It felt like they wanted to stay true to the original while modernizing the game and the two elements clashed so hard it made the game MORE archaic than the original. The first 3 hours in particular are an example of this: In the original, 4 Onion Knights fall in a hole, they fight a boss, and then the Crystal lets them job change. HOORAY! In the REMAKE? Only Luneth falls in the hole, fights the boss, and then the Crystal tells him to come back with 3 friends forcing you to hunt down the ONE out of place NPC needed to trigger the events to meet your friends and spend THREE HOURS doing dungeons and crap before suddenly being teleported back to the crystal to get job changes. Then you mention that enemies were awkwardly buffed to make up for the lack of numbers and...yeeeah.
Of course I am also immensely biased. I think Final Fantasy 1 has some of the coolest character designs in videogame history. We overlook them because they are "generic classes", but dammit! Fighter is cool! Black Mage is cool! Red Mage is hella cool! So most of the draw of FF3 was it being Super FF1, having a BUNCH of FF1-style class designs! That's all ruined by adding named characters whose designs I think are...boring and unappealing. Couple THAT with how badly they are implemented, dragging down the first 3 hours of the game and adding very little to the story and...yeah can I have my Onion Knights back?
So yes, I'm the one guy who is glad Onion Knight is in Dissidia instead of Luneth.

I'm currently on my second replay of FFV (for the video) annnnnd I am gonna have to replay FFIII and see if some of the statements I made still hold true... FFV bored me a lot more than I remember it have in the past, though, admittedly FFV was never one of my favorites. I didn't truly begin to have fun with FFV in my last playthrough until the third world... Well first playthrough is to replicate a 'normal' experience, the second is to represent an optimal/perfect run... so I will see how I feel then.

Geomance is useless? Geomancer are extremely OP (when you unlock them) except maybe in water dugeons/areas. Almost all of their ability deal thousand of damage to the enemy witch makes them extremely OP when you unlock them since they that's a lot more then any other class could do at that point. They becoume less useful in the endgame when other classes catch up. The only place where geomancer aren't that useful are water area where they often use a insta kill attack that almost always misses

Good review and I Agree with pretty much everything you said here. I pretty much only played the game once for the sake of series completeness and if I do play it again I'll wait until I can spare money for the Steam version. I remember that to beat this game after I picked my final party (ninja, black belt, devout and summoner) I went back to the start of the game to grind job levels all the way up to 99 since that's so easy to exploit, just take 10-12 action per battle and done, and there was a huge difference in the difficulty of the final dungeon once I did that.

One other thing I noticed in this game that I never see other RPGs do (except Golden Sun) is give a way to check to see if pots and barrels have useful items by using the shoulder buttons to zoom in and see sparkles. A minor thing but something I never see in RPGs, again except for Golden Sun

Not going to lie, I'm suprised to see this video up so soon after your epic FF15 effort. But this made my day, and as with the comment from Aaron having Dark Pixel release a Tactics video was also freaking awesome. I do remember buying this game day one when it came out, and really enjoying it. Then about 20 hours in or so, I got bored and didnt end up touching it again. You brought out many valid points and I got to say they are pretty spot on. I got the game when it came out on Android, and again, about 15-20 hours in, I just put the game down. I did enjoy the difficulty and aspects of the battle system, but it kind of was just ... Meh for me. That said FF5 is probably my favorite of the series, I couldnt stop laughing at the characters and their antics. Again another great video and a pleasure to watch. Keep up the awesome work and look forward to your next one. :D Also I shared to my G+ since tha is the only social network I haven't figured out how to delete yet. not a fan of social networking. But if it can help you get more views, then I will do what I can. :D

I haven't played it in years however, so it will be interesting to see how I feel about it in this upcoming playthrough. Thank you very much for watching and commenting (as usual!) and thank you for sharing! It is greatly appreciated!

Personally I hate when remakes/ports of games decide they want to add canon names and defined personalities to what had originally been mechanical blank slates. Can you imagine if they re-released FF1, but your party was locked to Fighter, Thief, Red Mage, and Black Mage, they weren't properly renamable, and they constantly commented on every situation with five minute cutscenes? That's how I feel about the FF3 Nintendo DS remake changing your four generic Onion Kids into specific characters who join at different parts of the intro chapter.

  • @AndrewTheEternal
    @AndrewTheEternal 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I found FFIV significantly harder on Steam than this game, oddly enough. I think part of the problem was that the enemies hit so hard that focusing down one enemy so they can't all gang up on one of yours is just so much better than doing crowd control. I only used black magic when the game made me in the Mini sections, and I ended the game (minus the Iron Giant) with no party wipes and only one retreat. Final Fantasy IV, on the other hand, managed to gank me within the first half hour when Kain and Cecil got swarmed and petrified by a group of four Cockatrice. The boss gimmicks in FFIII were also so inconsequential that I could just treat them as random encounters with a little more hit points.
I agree with your other criticisms of this game, however. Even as my first Final Fantasy game, I felt like it was a lacking experience.

FF 3 had too much text for the NES? Have you ever tried Dragon Warrior 4? That game makes FF3 look like Hemingway to DW4's King in just how much text is in the game.
Mind you DW4 hit the exact same SNES issues that Square tried to avoid head on and kind of flopped in the west, in part because of it.

It really is such a shame FF3 was the only one of the original NES trilogy to never get a 16-bit remake to match the first two. There's just this annoying gap left in my GBA collection that can only be "filled" by this odd-ball game with an entirely different aesthetic released on a successor system.
I also sorta can't help blaming the FF3 remake for the existence of the 3DS FF4 remake and supplanting the original for most modern ports theirafter.
Well... prior to the pixel remasters at least, but at least for my tastes I've never been much of a fan of those redesigns.

  • @amimm7776

Okay I was going to write the comment after the video ended but now I'm confused... how exactly can you call the bard a subpar class? No, seriously, it may just be the single most OP one if you test out the harps, one quite literally just halves all damage taken. Same with the Dragoon, also Ranger should easily be a "yellow tier" if you keep one in your team for long enough, not really ideal, but it's a fun class to use that can hold it's own, also I'd demote magus and sage to yellow since black magic sucks in the latter half of this game. The rest of them are pretty accurate though, evoker and summoner are a waste of two class slots. That said, Onion knight is actually the best... as a meme made to make fun of people that overlevel in RPGs.
    (Okay, finished it)
A pretty bitter pill to swallow as this is my third favorite game in the series... that being said, it's also one of the only three games in the series that I played, so that doesn't say much (I was planning to play all of the main series before discovering 4 heroes f light and from then on dedicating my life to weird oddities rather than well know good games). I think this may be the best most objective review of FF3 out there, I find the class system fun to experiment with, and it's probably great to do challenge runs with, too bad this game is way too long, oh well.
I'm surprised you didn't cite some of the worse bits of this game:
    - The esoteric way you gain job levels
    - The way constant class switching leads to you never really getting classes to their full potential due to said job level
    - The fact this game's pacing is both really slow and really fast at the same time
    - The constant switching between invincible and nautilus when exploring later on
    - The invincible's movenent speed, like, jeez
I'm surprised you got the steam version to run, I had to emulate the DS version because it just wouldn't boot for me, also when I played the Steam version way back then it was very crash happy.
TL;DR: it's a mediocre game with d ideas that stands as more fascinating piece of RPG history, but can still be enjoyable, glad I decided to play it on a whim.
Oh, and great video by the way, sorry for posting so many comments in quick succession, I just have to comment on my favorite games, off to see your FF1 review then! That one is my favorite in the series.
