But I could swear it was in the theatrical cut as well. Prepare to be disappointed in season 5. There's something very different about the styling, even the shots. It's more about teen drama now and is really beginning to feel like a soap opera that happens to have karate. I'm halfway through and I hope it picks up.

As a little girl with four older brothers who were obsessed with The Karate Kid, watching this movie for the first time is one of my earliest memories of feeling represented. My dad was so happy that I had my own "karate kid" to look up to. It became one of my family's favorite movies to rewatch as a kid. It was also the beginning of my family's love for Hilary Swank.

What a pleasant surprise. I keep wanting reactors to do this, after III; but no dice. So thanks for being the only reactors to do this one. I really enjoyed it.
In addition to Million Dollar Baby, I hope you'll watch her in Boys Don't Cry and Freedom Writers. She was 19-20 when this was shot, and the guys were mostly 22-24.
The gang was not just a football team, they were the " Alpha Elite " a JROTC junior cadet style High School fraternity focused on school security. Ironside is Col Dugan so he has a military background. BTW Hilary Swank's actual story mirrors Daniel Laruso's in Karate Kid! As a teen she drove to L.A (to live) with her mom in a Cutlas Supreme.
My favorite part is the gas station fight, with all the guys barely even trying to pretend they're not deliberately aiming for each other rather than Miyagi.
As stated below, Hilary Swank later won two Oscars for "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby (latter also starring Clint Eastwood). Hilary portrayed a transgender/LGBT person and it is based on a true tragic story. I highly suggest that you submit "Boys Don't Cry" to your patrons (hopefully they will be aware of this 1999 movie).
I'm with you guys: if Julie showed up in Cobra Kai, I'd be so excited! I could see Julie being a great connection to Miyagi for Daniel, plus she could teach him some Miyagi wisdom that he never learned. thanks for another amazing reaction guys! ❤
Imagine if she's the one who gets Daniel back with his wife, and back on track with Miyagi's teachings after he gets corrupted by eagle fang teachings!!!!!
@@STEJTHEGREATEST that’s actually a great story idea! it would give them somewhere to go rather than fall back on the tired trope of “Daniel and Johnny can’t get along” (which I think and hope we’re well past). I think she could also help with Tory’s and Robby’s anger.
also let's not forget maybe even something could Blossom between Julie and Chozen to where Mr. Miyagi's and Sato's Karate Teachings can become whole again and be brought back to Japan
FYI, this movie get's Miyagi's first name wrong. They call him Kesuke in this but it's actually Nariyoshi as told to us in Cobra Kai and even in Karate Kid 2 (but it's written on a sign in Japanese).
I honestly enjoy over the top villains in Karate Kid films lol it’s part of what makes them entertaining. But yeah the villains in this one were off, awkward, and really random and too evil. The biggest positives for me in this movie were Julie and Mr Miyagi’s friendship, and the scenes at the monastery with the monks :)
The showrunners for Cobra Kai confirmed that the events of this film are canon to the storyline, and you already know by this point how much of an impact Mr. Miyagi has had on the show even though he and his actor Pat Morita are no longer around. Furthermore, Hilary Swank has expressed interest in joining the show at some point. So even if we don't see her in season five, we might at least have her mentioned in some form. I know her best from this one biopic called Freedom Writers. You should check it out sometime.
Hey Schmitts! Loved your reaction and so glad you enjoyed the film. I made the similar comment in many of your _Cobra Kai_ reactions: despite it being waaay below the quality, I found the film surprisingly heartwarming in certain scenes, and very much enjoyed the dynamic between Pat Morita and Hilary Swank. I do hope her character shows up eventually and I believe Ralph Macchio said somewhere that Daniel and Julie have met before. Also, TBR, ''buffed up Marty McFly'' is the best description of Eric's character I have ever heard! Looking forward to your reaction on Friday!
This movie's villains are ridiculous, but I loved this movie as a kid and as a girl I just appreciated a story about a girl who learned how to kick ass.
You guys were right on. Chris Conrad as Eric is only 4 years older than Hilary Swank. Michael Cavalieri as Ned Randall is (get this) 24 years older than Hilary. He's now 72. Also Hilary won not one -but TWO Best Actress Academy Awards for Boys Don't Cry (1999) AND Million Dollar Baby (2004). And finally, people think this is the last time Mr. Miyagi appeared alive (1994), but the character actually appeared in a cameo in an Alien Ant Farm music video in 2001. And, of course, his character lives on forever through the great Cobra Kai.
I'm soooooo proud of you guys! You'd watched The Karate Kid series the right way. Sam, you'd hit the nail on the head when you'd mentioned Cobra Kai bringing back old characters, that was our point all along. Now you two are ready if any surprises show up in the series 👍
Mr.Miyagi was the best part of this movie and seeing him again just makes me kinda sad that we never got to see more Miyagi and Johnny scenes they would’ve been hilarious together
I've heard rumours of a deleted scene where Miyagi talks to Johnny before the tournament. But I've never personally verified it. Nobody has ever provided a link or even a screenshot. Rumour has it, the cobra Kai guys have access to hours of reel from the movies. Unused scenes, alternate takes...anything that's on a reel that the director chose to print. And what are the odds that a director doesn't call print on a single thing shot on an entire reel? But that's also rumour. Maybe they have nothing but the deleted scenes they already worked into Cobra Kai.
This is 1994. Hillary turned 20, the boyfriend was 24, Walton Goggins was 23. I have no idea on the main jerk guy as imdb doesn't list a birthday. It was his debut. The oldest thing with a listed age was 25. Legendary voice actor (in the voice actor communuty at least) Frank Welker voice the hawk. I didn't see that credit coming.
7:06 Holy crap. I didn't know Walton Goggins was in this movie. Lol. He was also in Ant Man and the Wasp and seems to just randomly appear in movies and shows when you don't expect it.
*(Before watching it)* well its about time! Some of us been dying waiting for it this whole time 😭 *(After end of the vid)* Splendid reaction, glad you both enjoyed the story
I feel like this is on par with part 3. The villains in that were also really ludicrous. And I know it is a well worn trope but those guys looked ridiculously old for highschool.
The "evil group" is actually a pre-military training group, similar to an ROTC. It readies kids for careers in the military. Because of this one of the things they are doing is running school security, so yes, they are hall monitors. The group, while being based in nobility and good intentions, went off the rails when Dugan took over. He was definitely not a good teacher or influence for those kids.
I like how the Karate Kid franchise mirrors the fights to the main lesson from Mr. Miyagi. 1st, "Firs learn to find balance", Daniel wins the tournament by fighting balancing in one leg. 2nd, "Defense is not being there". Danie runs away from the fights unless cornered, and at the end hel wins the fight with defensive moves. 3th, "Having good roots makes you strong", Daniel learns a lot of crap from Rees's friend, but at the end he wins by going back to basics. 4th, "Don't fight, someone always gets hurt, but if you have to fight, WIN!" Julies does not fight anyone until the end and wins. I am really impressed that the Cobra Kai producers were able to make a good show without Mr. Miyagi. His lessons were at the center of every movie in the franchise.
also in cobra kai daniel does reference julie. when he is teaching sam and robbie the circle technique he says its been a long time since the dojo had more than one student
The main villain is played by Michael Ironside. He did some voice acting for the DCAU. He hid the voice of Darkseid in the Justice League animated series and Superman animated series.
1) Mr. Miyagi is the best! 2) the Bad guys were a messed up version of High School ROTC program. 3) This story took place in real time, 1994. Hillary Swank and the character of Julie is 18 (Hillary Swank is 46/47....and about 13-14yrs, younger then Ralph Macchio and about 6-8yrs. younger then Daniel who is around 52-55 in Cobra Kai).
the international airport in Honolulu was renamed the 'Daniel Inouye' International Airport. He was a U.S. senator for 49 years and the highest ranking asian U.S. gov't official until Kamala Harris.
Hello TBR & Sam!!!!!! This was Hillary Swank's first film. She later won Oscars and Golden Globes for best actress for both " Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby". Both absolutely amazing and suggested reactions for sure! I believe Swank will be in Season 6 I think incorporating a possible female Sensei would add a lot! There is a connection in that Julie's mon was staying at Miyagi's so it is likely Daniel would have met her and learned of her daughter. The Cobra Kai writers have mentioned Julie as a candidate for inclusion in the series. BTW this film takes place in my hometown of Boston!
Michael Ironside is the best! He's one of my favorite character actors, and it would be so cool if Cobra Kai wheeled him out as the "final villain" when they eventually end the series. Also, isn't it strange that Ned (the sociopath guy) took the bird to an animal shelter? You'd think he'd just kill it, but he actually did what should have been done with it in the first place! I know his popularity has diminished some, but the Nostalgia Critic did a review of this movie - it was one of his older reviews - and his riffing on the bad guys is pure enjoyment. He had the same issues you guys did, trying to figure out if they were school security or something, and whether or not the docks were supposed to be a "lover's lane" or just a place to fight to the death. It's a very funny video worth checking out.
Michael Ironside plays the evil coach in this one. He was also Jester in Top Gun. In the gaming world, his most known role is the voice of NSA super spy Sam Fisher in the (Tom Clancy's; an author of "boy's literarure", no, not porn - spy thrillers) Splinter Cell franchise. I always enjoy seeing, and in particular, hearing him. He's got such a manly, rough voice, it really makes me jealous.
Excuse me for asking but where does your theme song derive from? I've watched your reaction channel for about 14 months, but I never knew. But I like it.
Million Dollar Baby is a great film, Hilary Swank gives a classic performance and Clint Eastwood is great, but it's such a depressing film that I never want to see it again lol.. it's definitely a must see film though!
Glad to stop by and see 'yall finally reviewed it. I'd like to offically welcome you BOTH to the Miyagi-Do family! Balance has officially been restored. Hope you liked the current season of CK! Can't wait for the next season myself!
I laughed before I even watched the video. All I could think was “Oh no… More victims!” Lol You guys are awesome and I always look forward to your reactions!
My headcannon is that the hawk character in cobra kai is a reference to this. Certain symbols or concepts are very recurring in the series. Plus it's a heck of an Easter egg. 🐣
A few suggestions for Hilary Swank's Oscar winning performances in boys don't cry and million dollar baby. A wonderful actress that had the power to act with just the emotion in her face and eyes while not saying a word. De Niro is obviously a more prominent example of this rare talent. Boys don't cry is very hard to watch in some parts, based on a tragic true story, some say loosely based but worth watching.
@TBR Schmitt I believe Hilary Swank is supposed to make an appearance in Cobra Kai season 5 along with Mike Barnes!!!!! Can’t wait to see you guys reaction to that as well!!!!!!!
I read somewhere that "officially" in the Cobra Kai backstory Daniel and Julie would have met at Mr. Miyagi's funeral. So the setup is there for Julie to show up on Cobra Kai.
The first Karate Kid is obviously the best, however I'm not a fan at all of the sequels but THIS one was great. The concept was definitely HIGHLY original, and all greatly casted. Ironside, Swank, the monks, yeah just good casting. Best part was Mr. Myagi handling the problem of a girl situation, so very VERY original. Sounds like you guys are just ok with it but I was glad to see your reactions to our hero MISTER Myagi!
I absolutely love your feedback on this movie, u feel it would of made more sense if the villain was of branch off cobra kai, and the enemy in this movie is so far fetched but the character development between Julie and Mr miagi is so deep and spiritual it bonds with Daniel but in a deeper way. I agree it would be awesome if they worked her into the series but only if they did in a meaningful way and not a comical way
I just realized the creators of Cobra Kai took some elements from this movie... like those thugs torching the car = Johnny's car getting torched in season 1
Sometime ago I made a season five prediction… It panned out I was pleased! (Now I’ve only posted here around about 20 times, so if you look for the spoiler, that’s on you!) But it’s pretty much the best series yet!
For me this definitely didn't live up to the original three, but it was fun and the relationship between Julie and Mr. Miyagi was really nice. I also loved the introduction of the monks! It's been a while since I've watched this so I was surprised to see Walton Goggins in it. If you are interested in another show with him, check out Justified. Great reaction!
Given the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, I wondered if you might put The King's Speech on the schedule. It's probably the best Royal movie, about George II who had an awful stammer. It's well-regarded, has recognizable actors, and got an 8 on IMDB 👍
They did seem to be very old high school students...but in may be a 90's thing. 1994 was the age of Beverly Hills 90210. Some of the "kids" on that show were pushing 30 in season 1. I wish they had written Michael Ironside's character better, as I generally like him in films and didn't so much in this one. He was just a psychotic "Alpha Elite" faculty mentor. (Which is a name Johnny would love of he has officially retired Eagle Fang.) And with a name like that the writers decided they didn't have to explain how they were the football team and hall monitors and had keys to the school building.
You could see how Suggan would’ve been one of the original cobra Kai students that a young Kreese and Silver trained. Also, Julie and Daniel would’ve known and trained with each other. She could be Auntie Julie to Daniel’s kids. It would all fit.
I definitely agree with you about the villain aspect of the movie. It felt like they didn't know what to do much with that given this time it was a female protagonist. Other than that, this is still a pretty good movie. I would say switches between second and third for ne in the Karate Kid series.
It was great to see Mr. Miyagi again! And we enjoyed meeting Julie! We are very excited for Season 5 of Cobra Kai!

I never recovered from my crush on Hillary Swank as a kid.
Yo, TBR SCMITT! "He looks like a buff, knockoff version of Michael J. Fox" is gonna have me CLOWNIN' for the rest of the week!
(CLOWNIN"=LMMFAO)
Michael Ironside plays the evil coach in this one. He was also Jester in Top Gun. In the gaming world, his most known role is the voice of NSA super spy Sam Fisher in the (Tom Clancy's; an author of "boy's literarure", no, not porn - spy thrillers) Splinter Cell franchise. I always enjoy seeing, and in particular, hearing him. He's got such a manly, rough voice, it really makes me jealous.
Excuse me for asking but where does your theme song derive from? I've watched your reaction channel for about 14 months, but I never knew. But I like it.
Our friend, Lui! It’s an original.

16:32 -- For Pete's sake, they're just stupid bugs!
Bugs Bunny: Hey, doc! Who'ya calling stupid?
Million Dollar Baby is a great film, Hilary Swank gives a classic performance and Clint Eastwood is great, but it's such a depressing film that I never want to see it again lol.. it's definitely a must see film though!
Once was enough for me with Boys Don't Cry as well.
Glad to stop by and see 'yall finally reviewed it. I'd like to offically welcome you BOTH to the Miyagi-Do family! Balance has officially been restored. Hope you liked the current season of CK! Can't wait for the next season myself!
The only good thing about it is Pat playing Mr. Miyagi one last time but everything else is over the top and dumb.
Great watch before Cobra Kai Season 5!
the "gang" was supposed to be like a rotc military prep squad
Quickest I've ever gotten to one of their vids. Was literally looking for something to watch.
Haha same, I hit subscriptions tab and this was 2 secs ago. Had to watch this.
"SEE YOU AT THE PARTY RICHTER"---Mr. Miyagi
now I have to watch this, thank u tbr fam
I actually saw this as a kid before I saw any of the other Karate Kid movies.
That's weird
What the second one was good 😂
@@hassansulaiman3848 Even the third one is good. The only bad movie is this one.
@@jesseowenvillamor6348 this movie ain’t that bad
@@hassansulaiman3848 It has some moments, but overall, it's a bad movie.
I absolutely love your feedback on this movie, u feel it would of made more sense if the villain was of branch off cobra kai, and the enemy in this movie is so far fetched but the character development between Julie and Mr miagi is so deep and spiritual it bonds with Daniel but in a deeper way. I agree it would be awesome if they worked her into the series but only if they did in a meaningful way and not a comical way
The coach also starred with Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon.
His name is John Saxon. He is a Hollywood long timer.
First! This was the first karate kid movie I saw. I think it's because my sisters are 10 and 8 years older than me haha
"She got moves". "No man she got HOPS,...yeah".
Hillary Swank went on to become the "Million $ Baby" - another great movie by Clint Eastwood!!
24:15 - this was a sweet moment! haha
I forgot how beautiful a young Hillary Swank was. She was awesome in this
Ralph Macchio will be 60yo this November
Hilary Swank was 48yo 2 months ago (July)
They were football karate gang monitors.😆
Cobra Kai!!! 1 day to go. 🥋👊🏼🐍
I just realized the creators of Cobra Kai took some elements from this movie... like those thugs torching the car = Johnny's car getting torched in season 1
Also the Hawk name from the actual Hawk from this movie. The nerd kid nicknamed Hawk on the show.
Sometime ago I made a season five prediction… It panned out I was pleased!
(Now I’ve only posted here around about 20 times, so if you look for the spoiler, that’s on you!)
But it’s pretty much the best series yet!
MILLION DOLLAR BABY A MUST💯👍
For me this definitely didn't live up to the original three, but it was fun and the relationship between Julie and Mr. Miyagi was really nice. I also loved the introduction of the monks! It's been a while since I've watched this so I was surprised to see Walton Goggins in it. If you are interested in another show with him, check out Justified. Great reaction!
I’ve watched this movie like 10 times probably and still have no idea what those guys were.. Extremist Hall Monitors?
In my brain back in the day, I thought Miyagi's "friend" was Daniel-San and Julie was his granddaughter. That made it feel like a better movie.
Given the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, I wondered if you might put The King's Speech on the schedule. It's probably the best Royal movie, about George II who had an awful stammer. It's well-regarded, has recognizable actors, and got an 8 on IMDB 👍
I can't unsee buff Michael J Fox
considering Ralph Macchio is 60 and Hilary Swank is 48 the age difference is probably about the same for their characters in the movies
And the over vocalization of the Harris hawk drove me nuts.
You could see how Suggan would’ve been one of the original cobra Kai students that a young Kreese and Silver trained. Also, Julie and Daniel would’ve known and trained with each other. She could be Auntie Julie to Daniel’s kids. It would all fit.
21:07 Would that bird survive in the wild???? :O
I definitely agree with you about the villain aspect of the movie. It felt like they didn't know what to do much with that given this time it was a female protagonist. Other than that, this is still a pretty good movie. I would say switches between second and third for ne in the Karate Kid series.
the dude that plays Eric is also in a "better" movie called "Airbourne"
