    In Part 2, we take a look at how understanding the qualities and exposure levels of your lighting and scene, can allow you to use colour temperature and white balance to turn day into night.
    Parts 4 and 5 will be released to TH-cam over the next 3 months, delving further into how you can look at using colour temperature and white balance in your work, with practical examples. Part 3 is exclusive to the digital download and the Patreon stream.
    There are a couple of sections in this part where the voice over audio goes a little funky when viewed on a phone. TV, headphones, speakers all seem to be fine, so possibly something mono related - I haven't been able to figure this one out! So headphones are recommended if viewing on a phone!

    Day to Night was always a mystery to me...showing the long exposure night shot and how similar it was to a day shot blew me away! It's incredible to think of shooting a bunch of shots for different times of day from one lighting setup! Thanks so much!

    Ive been lighting and shooting film and video for three decades. If newbies would just pay attention and absorb your lighting tutorials, they would become much more creative and possibly get more work as cinematographers. These techniques are also time savers, and subsequently, budget savers!!!

    6:04 Yeah I'm seeing how the main difference between these is no apparent bounce light to fill even little shadows in the texture of this wall under dim light already reflected once from the Moon.

    • @RobEllisCinematographer
      @RobEllisCinematographer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is actually because the moon was a lot higher in the sky than the sun - I would've had to wait a couple of seasons to get the sun in a similar position - but if I had, the images should have looked pretty much identical! But I felt the point was demonstrated well enough here! :)

    Guess this means that unless I'm lighting with practicals in a scene that I need to colour-match, I can get away with 5600K daylight-balanced lights for my scene and alter WB in-camera or post for the warmer tungsten look I'm after instead of necessary using bi-colour lights at 3200K?

    • @RobEllisCinematographer
      @RobEllisCinematographer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy you found it useful! And absolutely - even with a practical, you could use a bulb from Nanlite or Aputure and just set it to 5600K, so if none of your other lights can balance to tungsten, you're still set to warm everything up in camera/post!

    In the first example for morning sunrise time what is stopping you from using daylight lights and setting the white balance to daylight then change it in post, instead of in camera. Since I film in slog 3 10bit isn’t that enough info to just adjust your white balance in post?

    • @RobEllisCinematographer
      @RobEllisCinematographer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can absolutely do that! That's the great thing about raw video. But often you might want to view your image as close to the final product as possible in camera, so you don't get any unwelcome surprises if and when you adjust in post. Especially if we start mixing colour temperatures - if we can't see roughly how the colours are going to turn out we're not really in control of the image. If we only had daylight lights for the sunrise shot, we could have done the same thing as we did with the 3600k and push the white balance up a couple thousand K to see what it looks like warmed up/confirm it's looking how we need it to!

      @@RobEllisCinematographer thanks for the response! Love your videos was just experimenting with it in my studio for the past two hours and your right. It seemed I had a better looking night/moonlight look whenever I set the white balance in camera then in post brought down the exposure and shadows. I tried doing daylight only and moving around the white balance in post and it didn’t seem to have the right look.

    • @RobEllisCinematographer
      @RobEllisCinematographer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Or shoot on daylight film stock or tungsten film stock. Much of what makes digital useful are things like Raw and easily adjustable elements like white balance in post production. But it's all doable on film - just requires you to think about getting everything right in camera!
