Summing the speech by KMH president Ms. Newkai said, women in the past in Naga society were not involved in decision making nor opinion heard. Women were not even allowed near the Morung where men would gather to take decision on all matters affecting them. However with the advent of Christianity and much progress in Naga society today, women have availed education and excelled greatly, infact better compared to men, be it political affairs, economic matters and examples of different women participating directly into the electoral politics are signs that we have progress much from the time when women were restricted in all aspects of social, political and economic spheres. However it may be noted that the advent of Christianity has open the doors for women to lead active life unlike the times when genders roles were highly oppressive. She went on to add and urge that women should be respected, understood, valued and given importance for harmony and that women should stand for their rights.
Ville Rhetso speaking to the women and girls on the occasion on the topic Gender and gender related issue emphasised on the issue of Gender Based Violence. She informed that globally 1 in 3 women faces violence in their lifetime and that different types of violence is meted out to women and girls. Sexual violence, emotional violence, economic violence, physical violence and harmful traditional practices affect the overall growth and progress of women and that all women, civil societies and government machineries must come together for gender equality. Highlighting the need for Gender equality, she wondered if Naga society reported less of the issue during the Covid19 pandemic due to lack of awareness of women’s rights and availability of services, fear, stigma or Christian value of forgiveness. While globally the issue was widely exacerbated during the global lockdown. She also spoke on family planning, contraception and other issues concerning the women and girls including Government services of women helpline which runs 20/7 to help and assist women in need. While also urging on the value and importance of collaborative actions to address the issue confronting the society.
