I have the one with the SLI 9800M GTX and the X9000. It is a beast. Even with the old school dual core, it will power through Skyrim (as an example) on medium to high settings all day long 50-60fps. I love it. It is a substantial upgrade from the M1710 it replaced (also a beast for its time) and is still usable today. I have 7 on mine and it will run 10. Realistically, it would make a very good modern laptop with Linux so you'd have all the security and plenty of resources left to run everything else. Can't say I will ever get rid of mine.
I just bought one off ebay as I love collecting retro tech. Sadly mine comes with the 8700m sli have already looked into upgrading the cards (cost more than paid for the computer lol) but does have the duo extreme cpu
With that I know now, I'm mind blow that I spent AUD$5000 on a max spec version in 2009 just to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. Many fond memories at LAN parties, still laugh at peoples reactions and hater talk when I arrived with a Dell laptop while everyone else has a desktop - little did they know how much of a sleeper it was until the lights turned on and the fan started to sound like a turbo induction system on a car! hahaha Sadly the GPU died in 2014 and a fix wasn't possible. Rest in peace legend, you worked hard almost every day to energize my love for videogames
Just found this video. I got my XPS M1730 with a Core 2 Extreme X9000, 8gb ram, and Dual 9800M GT's. Still use it today for my older games. An absolute beast, and a reminder of a time when everything in a high end laptop was upgradable.
I bought the most basic version of this machine in 2008. I still have it and it works, but it looks like the graphics card is going bad as lines through the display are constant. Back then when you bought a machine like this you got leather-like bound manuals and some nice presentation- not like the Costco computers of today where you get a box with some foam and a two page quick start guide.
I'm fairly sure you have a dual 8700GT but with one of them having died due to how poor quality they were manufactured! It was a really common problem back then.
Hi @aguiristante, do your quikset lighting and mini LCD screen work with W10? I'm thinking of upgrading my XPS M1730 but I'm worried the lighting won't work.

If I run a display test it works, but when I ran a different test (I forgot the name of the test), it gives me an error indicator that means the display failed to initialize during startup. What factors could play a role in the failure of the display initializing? For extra information, the computer has a Nvidia graphics card in it (forgot which one).
I got a Dell XPS M2010 and I have a Studio 17. I have a ton of laptops (about 33) and I review them on TH-cam. I plan on getting the m1730, but I’m fucking broke so I can’t. Nice video, and I hope we both get more subscribers!
These are quit the Beast! It's fat and chunky, kinda hard to lug around especially with the power supply "brick". I have Windows 10 on mine and unfortunately most of the drivers aren't available for it anymore. If anyone has any ideas on mods to the drivers (rgb, the second display..etc) please let me know.

I would use frap instead of msi afterburner will be a lot lighter of a program and will run on all older hw practically.
