The packable rucksack should be a must for every bikepacker, It allows you to run barebaked 90% of the time & still have the calories & hydration for the longer stretches between resupplys.

A budget option I made was by converting a free tote bag into a musette. Slightly less comfortable when packed heavy. But packs down pretty small.

Personally I am hoping the 100km of gravel section in the race is something more akin to the Monsal trail than anything else. I've opted for 30mm GP5000s; ideally if I could have found stock I would have gone with 28s, but like you said comfort wins and a wider tyre might prove it's worth.

I accidentally ended up on a short, really knarly gravel section of a road ride I did this week. My poor road bike was crying but my 700 x 28 GP5000s took it. Not a single scuff on them!

Running those tires for second year now, first pair I used the ultra light but the sidewalls kept loosing air all the time, Running the endurance version now. its a bit heavyer but they ride so nice :) and just orderd my 3th set
On my bikepacking rig I run the fleeser ridge
I realy like that tailfin bag in the back, I have the normal one, but even with the extra extension on it. my saddle still goes a bit over the opening of the bag, the opening in the back side I like a lot :)

always great to see what the pro's use & their setups ....
tyres remind me of the panaracer gravel king slicks ... be interested to see a review/refelctions film one you have fimished the race.
good luck with your ride & see you on the start line.

panaracer tires are made in the same factory, and they are almost exactly the same weight.

They may be made in the same factory but rene herse tires are simply better. This is coming from someone who has ridden most of the tire sizes in different casings and tread type of both brands.

Love the tire selection. Just put those on my ultra rig last week on some new Hunt wheels and took them for a spin this last weekend. They rode fast and smooth. Very supple! Good luck!

Hi, Josh. Although you scratched at Pan Celtic, I'm curious as to your thoughts on how the tires worked out for you? All set here to put mine to the true test next week in a 630 mile ultra event. So far, I'm still loving them!

Interesting videos for me, as planning to do the event next year.
The biggest surprise for me a your gearing, even for crits and road races I don’t run harder gears than an 52/36 and 11-30. My ultra bike is setup with a 50/34 and 11-34 just to give the option of super easy gears when I’m really knackered. Although I could be tempted to fit a 52/36 on the front instead as I do find myself spinning out sometimes when I’d like to still be able to pedal

    Genuinely curious.
Q1 : Should European riders expect to be confronted to a scenario “à la 🇺🇸 Tour Divide, Roosville border” as in swift Customs and Immigration border checks for Western Europeans (20min), twice longer checks for Eastern European (Julianas, 40 minutes) upon crossing the UK border ?
Q2 : if that were to happen, in a gesture of sportsmanship, (Elite riders held at UK border for *unecessary* checks) would you stop, wherever you are, until they are back on race ?

I’ve got a Mason Definition as well and looking for a frame bag. Is the framebag you have from Tailfinn an off the shelf item? Can’t seem find it anywhere on their website. Like the colour, as it would seem to be exactly the same as the Vela frame I’ve got.

    • @joshibbett

The frame bag is custom made and currently they are not available off the shelf... however they will be launched very soon so keep your eyes peeled.
