    It's interesting to me how when you'd frequency sweep, you'd often settle on frequencies I wouldn't have chosen. You clearly made the right choice based on how they sounded at the end, but there's definitely a high degree of subjectivity involved. I'm sure your ears are better than mine at this point.

  • @mg1mg

    at 12:55, where you're bypassing the three guitars, if you hold down 'option' and 'command' before clicking just one of the inserts, you can bypass the entire row across all tracks. You may already know this, but thought I'd mention it in case you don't ;)

    Really nice tutorial Graham, good job! I know you're trying to keep it viewer friendly, However, you should might try to tweak the gain +- a few dB after deciding to use the 3dB preset, just in case the specific track you EQ at the moment sounds better with a higher or lower cut.

  • @SC86Canuck
    @SC86Canuck 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    could you show how you would mix and EQ an electric bass guitar, played in a Slap and popping style? I've heard that you can duplicate the original track 2 times and use the 3 tracks and EQ each differently. one track will EQ only the Lows and cut the mids and Highs, the second will get the Mids cutting the Lows and Highs, and the third track will EQ the Highs and cut out the Lows and Mids. that way you can get some of the percussive sounds to cut through from the slapping and popping, and still get decent bass tone in the track.
    feels unnecessary, but I think I got it to work for my track

  • @Warhear87

    I use an Axe FX which has a number of 5 band EQs available at various sections of the signal chain. Where would you advise placing an EQ in your signal chain? Is it a good or bad idea to have a graphic EQ in your signal chain before ever reaching your sequencer? Am I putting bias in my tone by relying on a premixed tone?

    • @landispearce
      @landispearce 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use an Axe daily as well in my studio. the parametric EQ at the end of your chain is KEY. depending on Genre of course but ive run into many circumstances where all it needed was the para eq at the end of the chain. ive found (personally) that less high end has helped me, at least when mixing metal. But its all a product of the song so it really just depends. if you have any questions as far as Axe goes, feel free to email me. landis@l13recordings.com

    Great Video! I have a little doubt.
    You say that it is okay for the guitars to lose a bit of low end because the bass will cover it up. But what if we are mixing an acoustic song? How can we compensate for the lack of bass frequencies in the acoustic Guitar after such an EQing method where a little low end is lost? Thanks in advance!!

    • @CatchTh3Wind
      @CatchTh3Wind 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, I think you answered your own question in asking; try not cutting out all of the low end. I'd be interested to hear if you found another solution. All the best~

    You work so much in the regions i would typical mix my vocal. How do i drop a vocal in the mix with out it getting int he way?

    • @jackgough7021
      @jackgough7021 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everybody has preferences. If you prefer the vocal in a certain frequency, perhaps you shouldn't mis the guitars in those frequencies. If Graham uses a certain frequency range, that doesn't mean you have to as EQ is dependant on the sound of your guitar, which would probably be different to how his guitar sounds (you could have DI'd it and he might have mic'd up an amp).

      vocals louder!? vocals mask guitars, not opposite, if you're boosting same (or even different) area on both and it's not working (panorama helps a lot in this case), pick up the most important element to the mix and move on!

    • @Nightmoore
      @Nightmoore 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got some horrible answers to your question dude. Let me try to help. The heart of a guitar tone tends to fight with vocals somewhat and there's not a lot of EQing solutions for that. The standard solution - and has been for decades - is riding the fader. When vocals kick in, most guitar tracks will dip in volume. Sometimes they will drop more than 6db. This is usually setup using automation in your DAW so you can fade the guitar send/bus (on one track) up and down as needed. It's not an instant drop - but it's pretty quick. It will come back up if the vocals stop. Once you learn to hear it, you can easily detect the same thing happening on any commercial song. The same thing usually happens on a guitar solo as well. The other guitars will drop to let the right track obtain focus. You don't need to butcher a track with EQ if you can solve the problem with changing a track's volume.

    • @fullmetalfunk
      @fullmetalfunk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Harrell I know it's a year late, but your answer is very good. That technique is actually called ducking, and it's done quite a lot like you mentioned. I believe a lot of engineers will side-chain a compressor on the guitar to the vocals to do just that.

  • @dailyhabitz
    @dailyhabitz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Graham, what's your opinion on using a low shelving eq versus entirely rolling off the low end in some cases? The way you demonstrate in your tutorial is how I've always typically worked as well but lately I've pondered if a shelving eq might be more musical sounding? Opinions?

    • @CalmBefore6
      @CalmBefore6 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      maybe my opinion is worth something as well...i almost never use the low shelf filters. i feel like either you have a bass or kickdrum track and then you wont want to take out any low end, or you have all the other instruments which usually dont need these frequencies, at least when you have a bass. now im thinking if you had an acoustic song with just a guitar and vocal or so I might consider not to cut out bass but rather just lower it with a shelf. end of the day though your ears decide whats best... so try it out and let me know what you found out :)

    @blackmetalchemist 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This may be just from my personal favoring, but on that acoustic the mid-high frequency at around 3k sounds a bit much of an unnatural twang on it. I would have gone a bit more around 5k but very informative nonetheless brother!

    • @BREEBREE758
      @BREEBREE758 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bass di is usually the best way to go. Even in a huge studio you'll find the DI is the main bass tone while amps and what not just add grittiness that you either do or don't want for the style of song. I'd still always record the bass amp even if you don't want to use it so that the bassist feels more badass while recording. So I guess the answer to your question would be to just get a totally badass DI box and run it through a totally badass preamp. Good luck!

    • @patrickstary8496
      @patrickstary8496 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're looking for a good bass sound, roll back on the bottom end and tone, then bring them up until it suits the song/sound you're looking for. Then to add presence and power to the instrument, use a compressor setting a slow attack and set the release; fast for a busy song/slow for gliding notes. Ratio around 2 and adjust threshold to control the amount of attenuation. Adjust output to compensate for volume. With a slower attack, you will get less scratchiness from your strings and it will sound over all smoother. It will also help taming the volume of your instrument while giving it presence.

    I have a quick question. Where should guitar solos fall in the mix? For instance, I have my rhythm guitars panned hard left and right, I put the leads in the center. Is this considered to be an acceptable panning? Or should my leads be panned as well? This is a metal track that I am talking about.

    • @richardpell
      @richardpell 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      guitars are generally panned hard left and right. Everything double tracked. If the lead is playing a solo it can go to the center during the solo.

    • @LavaVids
      @LavaVids 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I personally, would cut stuff in solo (muddy low mids, maybe 2k a bit to smooth it out a bit), but not boost. I would boost if I had to bring out something in the mix... Basicly fix the found in Solo, and enchance it in the mix.
      But if he was just starting the mix... I guess it's a good start point. Fix all of the sounds in solo, make them as good as you possibly can, and then start compromising and making changes to fit better in the mix...
      And I guess you can always EQ in solo, then see if it works in the mix by bypassing the plugin... Plus you can always identify the kind of sound you're looking for in the mix, then go ahead and solo the channel and EQ it according to what you have in mind.
      Solo can be a really helpful tool when making those subtle moves (3db or so). It's nearly imposible to hear them with the whole mix playing. So it's almost necessary. But if you end up soloing every track without listening to the mix and turning up the same frequencies on every single one of them... The mix is going to collapse.

    • @jerryr458
      @jerryr458 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you. I just think that's what we should say. Start with solo and then enhance and double check in the mix. I love Graham. I just don't want anyone to be scared of eqing in solo.

    • @BREEBREE758
      @BREEBREE758 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jerry Romero NO!!! never eq in solo! You should always know EXACTLY how you are affecting the balance of your mix! A "bad frequency" in solo might be making the vocals sound cool. You just can't know for sure in solo so its ALWAYS a bad idea. I'm sure he just did it so the viewers could hear better but I still think that was wrong of him and he should teach people instead how to hear the differences with the whole mix playing. YOU SHOULD BE SUPER SCARED OF EQING IN SOLO CAUSE IT WILL BITE YOU IN THE ASS! I speak from experience of clients asking why the vocals sound so thin and after hours of trying to make the vocals sound better I just decided to start from scratch and all of a sudden they were much fuller because I had gotten rid of some frequencies somewhere that were helping it. No one will hear you guitar in solo so it doesn't matter WHAT SO EVER how it sounds in solo...just make it work in the mix...Thats all I can say...make...it... work..in...the...mix......... :)

    • @jerryr458
      @jerryr458 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you just solo a track then EQ it?? Ballsy xD How do you know what frequencies are bad unless you are hearing how they effect the rest of the mix? My mentor would of slapped my hand with a stick if I tried that shit. When EQing to make guitars "pop" lets say, I'd just play the song and fuck with the knobs until they popped. Simple as that. Usually involves a high pass filter, a cut around 350 and then either a boost somewhere nice or just a slight volume increase. I know thats basically what he did but at least my way you have direct knowledge of how its affecting your mix either in a good way or a bad way so that you aren't working in the wrong direction for too long. I also mash that bypass button like a mother fucker. There is no excuse for it to ever sound worse when the EQ is engaged. As soon as you can engage the EQ and be somewhat happier with the sound just move on right away, don't fret, you made it slightly better and you can return later if you really need to. The more time you spend EQing the less perspective you'll have and the worse your mix will be. You should have gotten the sounds you wanted during tracking so there should be no complaining at this stage otherwise you've done it all wrong and you should probably go sit in a corner and think about what you have done. Mixing is strictly balance just remember that. Every move you make should be for creating a better balance....then you can fuck with crazy effects :D
