So I was messing around with my slip fit UV filter and I kind of accidentally removed the lens cover for the Insta360 Ace Pro and guess what it's only made "NON" removable by two tiny dots of epoxy.
This is a retail camera from Best Buy in the United States. It is not a PRE-PRODUCTION UNIT.
insta360 ace pro lens cover replacement is possible..
NOTE: I am not responsible for any damage to your camera, if you choose to replicate this YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! YOU MAY ALSO VOID YOUR WARRANTY if you break something or put the lens cover back on improperly and it leaks. Keep in mind this can void your Gopro and DJI warranty as well if you improperly replace a lens cover and it leaks.
NOTE: as I mention in the video if you try this it's at your OWN RISK!!! Bassman Strikes is NOT RESPONSIBLE for your camera or what you do to it....
You may also void your warranty if you break it or improperly re-assemble and it leaks...
Also this is a retail camera from Best Buy :-) I don't get free stuff :-)
Really appreciate you sharing your discoveries with us! Keep up the great work! Hope your foot is healing well!
This video makes me so happy! this was the only thing holding me back from bying this camera 😊 thank you for this video
I knew it, looking at the design I knew it was, the might have just glued it on. Great someone finally made a video on this.
Thanks for watching! Yes it's a completely replaceable design that they for some reason tried to disable with 2 tiny drops of glue LOL
Spoke to soon! I just saw your other videos. Cool deal.
Hey everyone, YOU CAN get replacement lens covers from Amagisn and they include a handy wrench!! Also keep in mind you of course do this at your own risk and you may void the warranty if you improperly replace the cover and go snorkeling or whatever and it leaks, same as if you forgot to put the battery door on properly or the USB door, or you damage either one of those and take it in the water.
Can’t find it any chance you could supply a link thank you
Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out! $8.51 53%OFF | For Insta360 Ace Pro Lens Filter CPL UV ND ND16-PL ND32-PL Filters Waterproof Filter Protective Mirror Action Camera Accessories

After the first opening with a wrench or a slip on filter like i did you can remove and install by hand, no different than a gopro.
oh thank god. you are a life saver. thanks a bunch.
thanks to this video! i thought it is not replaceable just like what insta360 said
thanks for sharing. this Is great info
great video, thank you.
Where are all the "this is a dealbreaker..." knuckleheads now? lol Awesome job bro! that's a big ass o ring lol
Thanks bro :-)
LOL, the guys on facebook were oh so sure it was completely NOT removable and could not comprehend the fact they could not change the injection molds to make the chassis so soon. Once the glue is broke you don't need any leverage device to get it off and on LOL. It's actually kind of a scandal and I hope they backtrack on this and don't void warranties.
It's a scam if they EVER charge for this lens cover replacement.
The funny thing is did Insta360 'really' think that someone at sometime won't do this or replacement kits out for it lol Let's be honest with ourselves, all cameras are 1 year warranty, after that you could do whatever you want with the camera. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't a money making scheme as they said they would fix it at no cost for a year.
They kind of scammed us on that....
Yah but what was the scam lol I don't see any profit generating advantages to doing something like this. They would make more with less headaches having us buy the replacement lens guards at inflated prices by ourselves lol
They took the option away and then deceived us on the real reason that's mostly why it's a scam... or maybe a scandal would be a better term LOL 😆
They caved and gave in to a free year of replacements, but after the year, they will charge for something that a toddler can do. 😆 LOL
@@BassManStrikes See, that's my question, they never advertised or marketed the Ace Pro to have a removable lens guard, it was a last minute decision made. Only the pre-test models were removable but those reviewers never once said anything about a removable lens guard in their reviews when they had those models as a feature. I like to give companies the benefit of a doubt lol A scam is advertising something that is false or making false promises. There's no profiteering in this decision at least not that I can see, it wasn't a selling feature, they even outright said in the manual that it is "not" removable. So yah, I would be very interested in why they did this, no worries, I'll find out lol I'm corresponding with a Insta360 rep right now on other issues of this camera that was requested by the viewers. I wonder if something happened with one of the pre-test reviewers or they said something about the lens guard but I'm sure they agreed to some sort of NDA for any test models, that's pretty common.
Have you attempted to pull the lens out of its housing? I'm interested in knowing if the threads are glued and if the hot mirror is part of the lens assembly. I'm looking at it for infrared/full spectrum conversion. Gopro looks the easiest to convert at present.
Hi, No I have not tried to do that :-)
My ND and UV filter full replacement covers should be here tomorrow and I will do a review of those asap :-)
man, i wish i got my stuff, i ordered a pile of stuff lol
@@MiyagisRant LOL, it usually takes 4 weeks to get stuff from Aliexpress especially at this time of year. I ordered some knockoff chatterbaits like in sept 2021 and they showed up in March of 2022 hahahahahah
@@BassManStrikes I know, but they've been really fast for me lately grrr i need my Ace Pro stuff! lol
Has there been any fogging issues.. only thing i can see as being a issue is perhaps it was air tight to prevent fogging like a shot of nitrogen or whatever similiar to watch faces ect.. if any moisture gets trapped behind it large temp different could maybe cause fogging is the only major setback i could see happening. like going underwater could cause fogging as well hence why those plastic dive cases have a small absorbent that goes in the case
No, the glue didn't make it air tight, it has a o-ring. The glue was there to prevent people turning it, not to seal it.
I'm curious if the lens is removable too, and would be interesting to see a comparison of distortion and lens correction. I see you have a green background on the table that would show off distortion well.
No idea but that could destroy the camera 😮 maybe the Jerry Rig guy or I fixit will do a complete tear down at some point. I'm not going to do someone like that 👍
@@BassManStrikes yea, besy not to. But eha about distortion thing. I've not heard anyone talk about corrections, I know ogpro has linear mode, but what does this camera have? Does it work well?
They will likely offer close up filters and you can get 3d printed adapters for 52mm close up diopter lenses.
The lens should be in place using glue just like others action cam. DJI action 3 has many hack due to problematic focusing distance issue.
This camera does have a linear mode, it's called dewarp .
@bassmanstrikes have you noticed the gap around the seal before and after xhanging out the lens? Have you tried it underwater since changing it?
Yes, the gap is normal because it's a removable lens, and it is present whether it's removed or not.
I don't think it's a patent thing, I've dealt with patents and they could easily make small changes to prevent infringement. I suspect they will open this up in the new production models.
I looked up the GoPro patent and it exactly describes what they did here and they just got awarded it in 2022. Not saying it is for sure but it's certainly possible.
I should do a comparison between the GoPro lens cover and the Ace Pro. The go pro one is way better designed and it's metal. It uses a raised tube and the o-ring goes around the tube, kind of like how they do aquarium filter valves.
@@BassManStrikes Yah but those silly silicone spots wouldn't have been any extra water seal protection, heck, look at the dji's they are just a simple screw in cap with an o ring at the base lol
I did the comparison and the only thing really better on the GoPro is the metal base, the Ace pro actually has 4 points of contact for the cover and the GoPro only has 2 via wires.
@@BassManStrikes See that metal base worries me, especially with salt water. I would have to everytime make sure that's clean on every salt water contact or that would corrode to hell.
Maybe they said it's not removable so people would send in there cameras to get fixed or to buy the extanded warranty and they didn't want he consumer to self repair.
I think it was a strategic decision after receiving an infringement letter from a patent attorney. The time to shine was right now. Delays while fighting a patent claim could drag the introduction beyond the optimum introduction period. The 2 spots of glue are a lawfare fix to get to market on time. Its legal gamesmanship, which is why all their public statements say its non removable. By the time the follow on model launches, the legal eagles will be prepared and ready for war. It didn't happen this time because they were blindsided.
Will the ace pro fit the go pro wide lense attachment?
Nope, it's a similar design but not the same. GoPro lens covers are not compatible
Hey folks watch this video to see what something that is designed from the start to be NON removable looks like:
th-cam.com/video/5C3SgCi3roU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5o5S0Rjx9rth03KV
The ACE Pro was designed from the start to have a user replaceable lens cover and you can clearly see that in my video. If they really wanted to make it non removable they would have used a monolithic design that was integrated into the shell of the camera and the lens cover would glue into that like on the Hero 8.
So why would they develop a fully removable lens cover system and then attempt to disable it?
1. To reduce service calls and make extra money after warranties start running out...
2. Patent issue?
If it was just simply a bad design they would not simply use 2 tiny dabs of glue that do nothing to enhance water resistance. they would but a lot of silicone in there to prevent it from leaking.
Only Insta360 knows the real reason and iit's HIGHLY unlikely they have been transparent about it.
Good find. Although I'm not sure if it's a patented issue. The GoPro "lock" is verry quite different. And both look verry well like a "bajonet" locking mechanism. Which is used by many devices, or something that looks or works in the same manner.
But it's verry strange they lie about it and gluing it. And not selling spare covers... That whole Ace Pro is just a flop...
Gopro completely redesigned the lens cover after the hero 8 and has a patent on that design. My guess is they came out with the hero 8 because of some patent issue regarding the lens cover.
Again, only a guess, but whatever made them come out with their own patent could be causing issues for the Ace Pro.
Again, only a theory 😁
😮
So, to put it simply, even after attaching it back, it's safe to get in water? Cuz I got one too and my friend uh kinda ruined the lens' side but the glass is fine. So I wonder it would be waterproof if I reattach it.. so it will still be waterproof, right?
Yes, if it's a oem lens cover. The 3rd party ones are hit or miss because they are assembled shoddy.
Ruined lens side how? It's a just a screw on lens cover and if you look at it there should be a o-ring, if the o-ring is damaged well then no it won't be waterproof so put it in a dive case if you plan on going in water..
@@BassManStrikes well, it's just a very minor dent but it kinda irritate my symmetry/fine shape taste 💀, but the lens is fine though
Also, OEM? What's that?
Where is @cameraconspiracies on this, a real conspiracy he is silent 😂
I'm waiting on the knuckleheads to eat their words, I'm sure they will of course bring the obvious, voiding warranty lol predictable lol
@@MiyagisRant, yep but as long as you don't say anything and post videos it's unlikely to void your warranty unless it's put back on improperly 😂 and it leaks.
@@BassManStrikes Even if you post videos Insta360 would never connect you with the camera in for warranty lol Doubt they even care lol
Do you just force it off the first time?
I wouldn't call it forcing, it took very little effort to remove it, I was kind of shocked how easy it was with just a bit of added leverage 😂 it's literally just two tiny dabs of epoxy, they were not going to make it difficult for service techs to replace the cover. Their claim it needs to be replaced in a humidity controlled environment, is bogus 😮😮
@@BassManStrikes thanks!
It doent really matter that it comes off if you cant buy a replacement. And I bet if the camera gets messed up now by water. Insta will say its because you broke the seal. Even thow it looks like it should seal again no problem. But now that the glue is brocken the lens could maybe get bumped and turned accidently while underwater.
Nope not possible it's more secure than the gopro cover...they only glued it to feebly prevent it from opening.
If you don't install the gopro or dji cover properly and it leaks they won't honor the warranty either.... you absolutely take a risk with the warranty for water related damage. Same as if you remove the battery or usb door and forget to replace it and go snorkeling. See how that works 😉
You can buy a replacement. LOL Watch the other videos, there are gobs of them from Amagisn on Aliexpress and in the other video I show those. Actually they have them on Amazon now as well :-)
3:59 hot-melt glue.
Yes it could be 🤔
Can I buy a new lens cover from Insta360 or anyone else? If I can't then no point in taking it off.
There are gobs of them from a company called Amagisn on alliexpress, keep in mind they are not Freewell level quality but without a doubt could save a vacation if you had replacement clear UV covers on hand 😉
Well, everything is removable with force...
No force or heat needed. It's literally 2 TINY dabs of glue. How do you think they can offer free replacement for a year? They lied about it being UN-removable for retail cameras.
Put it in water 💧
I did doesn't leak. The water resistance is from a o-ring, the glue does nothing to improve water resistance.
Bound to be a chemical that could get that off easier.
It comes off super easy,, just two tiny dabs of epoxy.
If something can be removed, with possible serious consequences, then it's not removable, especially for the normie consumer. Removable means by all intents and purposes, designed and built to be removed. That being said, this is good to know.
This was designed to be removed, they disabled it by 2 TINY dabs of glue. It was NOT designed from the get go to be NON removable like the gopro hero 8 was.
There are possible serious consequences if you remove the gopro or DJI lens cover also. Watch this video to see what a non removable lens cover looks like that is actually designed from the start that way as you seem to feel the Insta360s was (it was not 🙂 ) If Insta360 designed the Ace Pro to be NON removable from the start they need new engineers LOL Why have a removable lens cover with a 0-Ring and 4 points of locking contact? (The gopro hero9 - 12 only has 2) It makes no sense when they could have made it like the Hero 8 where the square glass cover is glued on and only glued on, no o-ring, no locking mechanism. Insta360 by using 2 tiny dabs of glue did nothing to make it more water resistant.

@@BassManStrikes unless we find out (which we'll probably never do) why they did this I don't know what to say about this situation. Maybe they realized that after X amounts of replacements, the plastic becomes loose and moisture can get it. Maybe they realized it's going to make them lose money somehow if people do it. Who knows. I will admit that I didn't watch the video carefully before posting, because it seems indeed it was designed to be removed, as I said maybe not repeatedly, but they backtracked on that for some unknown reason.
Yep, it could be anything even supply chain issues. Maybe they felt they could not supply enough of them. I have had mine off now dozens of times and tested the OEM lens cover in my 75 gallon aquarium and it's fine. It actually has 4 points of pressure and a full o-ring and that is what actually makes it water resistant not the tiny drops of glue they used to try and prevent it being removed by hand. As long as the o-ring is not damaged it's not going to leak from that area. I am more concerned with it leaking from the USB door cover as that is fairly fragile.
you can always use a dive case for underwater use :-)
It's not a patent... Insta360 has officially confirmed that the lens cover is non-replaceable and they plan to change it in the next generation of the camera. So it's probably more of a marketing gimmick. And a gateway to new things for the new version.
They confirmed it's non removable by the user. If you send it in they simply unscrew it, probably with a wrench to break the dabs of glue and then put a new one on... don't be surprised when the Ace Pro 2 has a different removable lens cover design. Watch the video, and you can clearly see its a removable design artificially rendered unremovable by 2 tiny drops of epoxy.
They really didn't do a good job of making the removable cover unremovable....the genie is out of the bottle.
It's highly likely it is a patent, and they weakly disabled it(the lens cover), so the camera could make it to market before the holidays.
These companies don't always tell the full truth 😒
Yes, and in the second generation there will be no resin drops and a great new feature will be removable lens covers :)
And just like that they are removable hahahahaha
