  • 1970 1/2 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air IV Muscle Car Of The Week Video #3
This week's Muscle Car Of The Week from The Brothers Collection is a super-rare 1970 1/2 Pontiac Trans Am, complete with the Ram Air IV 400 cube V8 and Muncie 4-speed transmission!
1970 marked the second generation for GM's F body platform, and the company made substantial improvements to the car over the '67-'69 versions. The 1970 1/2 models were longer and more spacious inside, and generally drove more comfortably than the earlier cars. 1970 also marked the peak in performance Muscle Cars, and the 1970 1/2 Trans Am was one of the top performers. The Pontiac Trans Am came loaded with numerous performance add-ons, such as upgraded suspension, brakes, exhaust, and distinctive styling.
This particular Polar White Trans Am is among the most sought-after of all, as it features the 370 HP Ram Air IV V8 engine and a Muncie 4-speed transmission. The Ram Air IV engine was assembled with very tight tolerances from the factory, making it as close to a hand-built racing engine as you could buy from GM. The RAIV package started with a 4-bolt main block, forged crank and pistons, and a high performance oil pump, but the big difference was in the top half of the engine. The Ram Air IV heads boasted 67cc chambers, 2.11" swirl-polished intake valves and 1.77" exhaust valves, and large round exhaust ports. The .520" lift RAIV cam had a long 308 degree intake / 320 degree exhaust duration and pulled air through an aluminum dual-plane intake manifold. These parts sounded more like they were hand-picked by a race engine builder than a factory offering, but that's what makes the RAIV so special. They only made 88 of these cars, 59 were manuals and the other 29 came with automatics. It's one of the few cars where both transmissions were offered and the manual outsold the auto. Watch the video to learn more about this Pontiac Historical Society documented correct '70 1/2 and its unique details like the original 2-tone blue seat covers, 1-year only Rally II wheels, and distinctive styling elements.

You're correct, we misspoke and meant to say 1970 was the only year you could get a 12bolt from the factory in a 2nd gen F-car, as both the Z/28 and the Trans Am had them. Thanks for pointing that out.

    I'd love a 70 400 Ram Air IV or a 73 455 SD . Throw in a 69 too! Great video. Love the 70 1/2's .

Maybe my favorite muscle car ever from Pontiac.... Pretty close between this, a 69 GTO Ram Air IV, and a 62 or 63 421SD Catalina. Tough decision lol

Pick any year Firebird; it's impossible to find an ugly one. Very nice video and if you can't find room for the car.......you can use my garage!! Ha....love that Ram-Air 400 was such an excellent torque motor. Thanks again Kevin for your knowledgeable review of these cars.

Beautiful dashboard with the engine-turned piece......reminds me of the Cosworth Vega that I let go.....sigh.....it had a gold piece in the place that the Trans-Am stainless and it included the number signifying which of the limited-production cars I had....mine was 054. I replaced troublesome fuel injection with a set of DCOE Webers....end of problem.

i think the back bumper are also different. the pontiac is a perpendicular to the ground face, the chevy is sloped at a 30 degree angle or so. i think no on the spoiler question. and stripped naked they might look the same, but under the hood is where the real difference is. in 76 pontiac put out the 6.6 400, chevys best was a 350, with 35 hp less.

Stack this up against a SD TransAm...the 'super chicken' got bigger as the hp ratings went down LOL!!!

Uh, I'm pretty sure 12-Bolts came in other F-Bodies from the factory. Even discussing second generation F-Bodies, I believe the SS396 Camaro came with a 12-Bolt rear. This is in reference to the above video @ 4:39. Great vids. And Yes I understand this is being a troll but, I believe this can be a great video series and wish to clear up inaccuracies.

12 bolt rear ends were only available in 1970 for both the camaro and firebird. 1971 and up they were all 10 bolts

So these Pontiac engineers knew the EPA was closing in fast and made this their best last effort. Seriously:' how many of these guys knew this was the END of an era and warehoused as many of these and others as possible?

I thought it was an early 70's. Another guy said that stripe was a 69 style only, I was thrown by the seat style.
I have a question: pick a year, lets say 1976. Take two F Bodies. One a Camaro, the other a Firebird. Stripe them down to the bare body shell, nothing but primer. Are they different? No front clip, I mean put them on jack stands and strip them. The big question - are the rear spoilers interchangeable from Camaro body shell to Firebird?

All 69/70 RA cars should’ve been fours. Seems like Pontiac played it way too safe and lost out.
