      If you come straight from the distribution board to a JB, is there a max number of rooms/lights you can supply from that?

    This is outstanding. I bought an LED downlight and the instructions had one line about connecting color to color, and nothing about how to connect it to a wall switch/dimmer or how to control multiple LED downlight lights with a single switch/dimmer. This video was excellent. Thank you.

    Hi Gaz, thank you for making this nice video, showing how to wire a joint box the proper way. In my opinion the most important part of this video is that you dress the conductor the longest route to the contact, so in case of reconnecting you have enough length to strip the conductor (with a knife), double over and put it back in. Your enthusiasm ensures that we keep watching. Greets from the other side of the pond XD. 😍

    Excellent presentation as usual. So am i right in saying that this is another way you could wire up maybe a series of downlights and also this would keep the no of cables at the switch workable as oppossed to the 2 plate method where you take the feed to the switch. Thankyou for showing another method as i thought you were limited to 2 and 3 plate cheers from an old man trying his best to learn and practise a fascinating trade. You are a legend Sir.

    Hi Gaz, I’m learning so much from your videos but I would rather get an experts advice. I currently have 1 pendant, 1 switch feeding to a mini consumer unit in my garage however I was wanting to upgrade or replace the circuit to run 2 main pendants and a separate pendant (basically 1 to use most of the time then when working at the bench have the extra 2 lights). I have 2 doors into the garage and would like to be able to switch either or both on from either door. I hope I have explained this but if you could draw a diagram that I could follow I would enjoy the challenge.
    Many Thanks
    Jonny

    So am i right in saying the reason why the newer style is called a "Maintenance free" junction box is down to the fact it has means of cable retention therefore no stress on the connections will be applied from pulling cables around on the roof etc loosening the terminations?

      @xxwookey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jontrawford8233 Bit late now I suspect, but you ar right to worry about where the airtightness and/or vapour control layers are going. Downlighters are a problem here. Pro-clima kaflex grommets are a great way to put a cable though a membrane: www.greenbuildingstore.co.uk/product/kaflex/
      But it depends on the construction whether you have space to put a downlighter in the plasterboard but keep the membrane intact above and just put the wire through that. You might need a taped-in box like the optime (www.ecologicalbuildingsystems.com/post/optime-airtight-downlight-protectors-passive-house-insulation-series-part-11) which is very difficult to seal in if it wasn't done when the ceiling was built. You'd have to cut out a bigger bit of plasterboard: sort out the wiring and membrane behind, then repair the plasterboard hole.

    So as a total non-electrical person, if you had say 7 other rooms each with separate light and separate switches, do they all take a live from the first connection box if they are on the same circuit on the consumer board to the next connection box. So you have a connection/joint box in each room? On separate note, I would like to highlight a potential electrical hazard. Historically, when using an apple computer charger, the cable becomes slightly split at the plug ended into the computer. To ensure this doesn't happen I had wrapped some electrical tape around the cable and the plug shroud. Then after about 4months I took the tape off and found that the electrical tape had caused the rubber cable to literally dissolve and exposing the cables. Not sure if theses normal, or if it was dodgy electrical tape. However I believe the electrical tape was purchased at B&Q, so it was from a reputable source and should therefore be certified for its intended use. Whats your thoughts?

      @Candisa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, running the lives neutrals and cpcs from each room back to the first connection box is possible but then that first box will have to be a rather large example that will be very busy. It makes more sense and usually is more economic in cable length to just string from one to the next and so on.
      Wiring conductors are insulated with PVC, which can be flagged with different coloured electrical tape as is done in this video to use the blue wire as a black switched live wire. Cords of plug-in devices can be insulated with pretty much any insulating material, which is not necessarily compatible with the glue of electrical tape.

    Love your videos, and I don’t mean to be pedantic, but millimetres squared is not the same as square millimetres.
    That would make a 10mm ‘squared’ cable 100 square mm in cross-sectional area, unless I’m wrong. Which I could be 😁

      Loft wiring being a total mess is absolutely standard. To be fair it takes significantly more time to do it neatly. That costs money if paying an electrician (and DIY is strongly discouraged in the UK these days).

      Everyone has to learn sometime. And this has useful details like looping the wire in the JB for later changes and marking the switched live with brown sheathing which is the stuff that isn't obvious if you just work it out from first principles like I did many years ago.
