Guthrie Govan once described Shawn Lane as not just a fantastic guitarist, but a fantastic mind. Buckethead and Guthrie Govan both have completely different minds, and completely different styles of playing, but both are light years ahead of most guitarists. I think it's also safe to say that both guitarists have become part of that elite few that can simply play what they want, with genre coming later.
@willeng84 I'm not saying that, I'm relaying what Guthrie is saying in the video above. He said that he changes strings more often when playing high profile gigs to avoid the chance of one snapping while using a floating trem.
@AlexSlams I like the D'addario's regular's on my strats alot but they only last like 48 hours seriously its pathetic, I don't know if the ph in my skin has fallen over time but they go bad so quickly now a days. I just broke my first .10 in about 3 years two days ago but it was on a new Parker Mojo with stainless steel frets. I think the new frets just filed through the string from bending. I run through frets like crazy though, I have 3 down guitars right now b/c of frets.
@willeng84 Sounds like you have a real heavy left hand!! My Les Paul is played to death and has only just had it's first dress after I bought it in 2000.
@AlexSlams Word, yeah I was thinking a high profile guy like this should always have new strings on. I don't like old strings, I used to think they were best after a few hours play but I can't stand any grit on the strings now. I clean them, been wrapping little pieces of t-shirt around each string and stripping the grime off, been doing that forever but I play so much my only option is the Elixer nano web. I have really come to like what they add/take away from the tone.
@willeng84 I never got on with Elixr strings, I had a string endorsement offer a small string company but I just couldn't move away from my D'addario XLs - they just do everything for me, they sound awesome, really responsive and are fairly inexpensive. I change more often than many do but that's because I prefer the sound of new strings. I haven't snapped a string for nearly 6 years!
@AlexSlams Yeah man, I just play so much lead and I am a bending mofo which alot of lead players are but when I say bend I mean I bend it crazy, not only that but to really get that tone sometimes you just have to stragle it, thats the difference between most guitarists of years and rookies is strength in the fretting hand, all those vibrato's and bends really take they're toll on a fret.
I played with PRS floating knife edge tremolo's live for years and years and never broke strings especially when I started using .10's. I really doubt you would break strings with a nicer trem system such as the one on his Suhr and PRS's. Fenders are some of my favorite guitars but I never use they're trem's at all. Maybe one day I will experiment more but for now I just tighten down the springs in the back so it doesn't pull up or go slack with bending and holding notes. PRS's hold tuning.
@AlexSlams You think that Guthrie Govan is playing with old strings? I am a semi pro meaning I make 70% of my living from guitar and I change Elixer's once every week or week in a half MAX. I don't even gig that much anymore, back when i gigged all the time I was playing ernie ball regular slinky's and I would change strings ever 3 days and every night before a gig, when you play as much as I do and I guarantee Guthrie playes that much, strings are dead quick.
If you knew anything about Buckethead you wouldn't be saying that. Buckethead is on par with Guthrie. And I don't really ever say that. Buckethead is my favorite guitarist of all time I know everything about him. Guthrie has quickly become my favorite along with him so therefor I have studied him as well. They're are two of the top 3 best in the world hands down. But hey, to each their own.
i guess the top 3 electric guitar players would be Shawn Lane, Guthrie Govan & Allan Holdsworth. Buckethead is amazing, very versatile, but his improvisation ability & fretboard knowledge are not as close as those guys.
I think when Guthrie first mentioned taking a chord and thinking of the notes in the chord then adding notes etc people started to laugh.. I don't think it was meant to be funny. He was serious!! Lol
I love his dry humor. he probably hated me, though. I caught 3 of his gigs and each time I was awkward as hell + tried to be cool with him backstage. personal FAIL
Easy now, at least study some Buckethead before you talk shit. Buckethead is eons above a lot of people and people only think he's nothing more than a tapping machine. Mainstream was merely making a physical reference.
i find that Buckethead music is repetitive imo. Yes he made many albums, can do many genres, many techniques, but it doesn't sound interesting to me & gets boring after a while when he's improvising at a stage performance. Guthrie on the other hand, has better dynamics, a more fluid player, and his phrasings are way more refreshing & musical, Buckethead is more like a technical player rather than a improvisator like Guthrie or Shawn Lane. well to each their own, subjective matters

You can feel this guy spent the most of his life till now to learn and practice .He deserves all the honors for that , cause he did it to share it !
I wish Shawn Lane was still alive. It would be awesome to see him play with Shawn
That was immense!! In every way!!
@willeng84 I'm not saying that, I'm relaying what Guthrie is saying in the video above. He said that he changes strings more often when playing high profile gigs to avoid the chance of one snapping while using a floating trem.
Amen about the scales!

The Best!!
@willeng84 I think the thinking is more down to the older the string, the more susceptible to snapping.

Man this guy can also make a living as a stand up comedian...Amazing guy....God Bless...

Guthrie is a musician, buckethead is a technician.
older crazier brother
i got well and truly shot down...
How can you even compare them? They play completely different styles of music...
what can he do that buckethead cant?
thats what i thought. i didnt understand why they were laughing, lol.
ahh well, if haters be hating may as well go all the way and say SLASH FTW!
he sounds so much like greg howe
Buckethead is simply a technician.

love how he downgrades the use of scales then does it faster than the greats, Showoff.lol
I'm tired of hearing the name Buckethead
you just can..
I think when Guthrie first mentioned taking a chord and thinking of the notes in the chord then adding notes etc people started to laugh.. I don't think it was meant to be funny. He was serious!! Lol
@MainstreamRenegades why....
That's the best thing about his sense of humor - he can't help it, he's just clever.
and shit ton's better, which is why he gets the older brother status :D
I love his dry humor. he probably hated me, though. I caught 3 of his gigs and each time I was awkward as hell + tried to be cool with him backstage. personal FAIL
Paul Gilbert and Guthrie are so much better
