Anybody noticed in the entire 7 mins clip, Tony Leung has not spoke a single line? And he nailed the emotion perfectly! I think it the reason he won the Golden Horse Award Best Actor for that year.

I think that's why I love this version so much more than the American remake. The film is riveting and yet they don't talk much. The American version is just people constantly yacking and yacking, full of profanity, an obligatory "fuck" in every single sentence... I mean, Tony Leung just stares at Wong's body without saying a word. Leo, instead, says "what the fuck" twice. And it doesn't make the scene better...
In the end this version is so much more efficient.

The fact that Wong was the only one left that knew of Chan's identity makes it that much more heartbreaking. Tony an amazing actor... no words needed just a look.

@McNugget06 I stand by my belief that this movie did not need "remaking". I do think this is one of the "crown jewels" among recent East Asian film-making. I actually just watched the scene referenced in the Departed, and let me say, good god, nowhere near. It's making a leap for me, definitely, to assert the rest of the film content...but oh lord, for me, this is THE scene...how can you not get this right? I showed this movie to several of my friends that had watched The Departed, and...

These seven minutes made me decide that I was watching a HK masterpiece. Love the cheesy music, the slow-mo on the cops faces when they realize their boss is dead, Tony "should play in an american production just to have an oscar" Leung's performance here is overwhelming, and the whole car ride and its crepuscular atmosphere with a dying Chapman To talking jibberish while Leung's grieving... Just grand.

Di Caprio, Damon and Sheen are excellent actors but they could not capture the emotion of this scene from the original IA.
This scene has more power in IA because the characters and relationships between them was heavily developed.

  • @palehorse864
    @palehorse864 15 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The Departed also really screwed up this scene. The two guys in that film had very little emotional connection, plus they telegraphed the surprise from a mile away and then added blood spray and gross sound effects. This scene was a shocker when I first saw it, and the emotion of the scene was very strong.
Also, the elevator scene in this is far more stylish, with the elevator shaft with bullet holes causing little pinoints of light, and the slow badge reveal from the darkness.

Just saw the movie.... what a great movie. Loved it. First saw departed and liked it but hated the cheesy ending it had.
But the ending to this movie though somewhat similiar to departed didn't over do it thus not making the not feel cheesy. Not sure why the Departed didn't have the same ending guess they tried to top the ending of the original only for them to fail.

Secondly, it is f:ed up that Departed can recieve all that Oscars for someone else's film.

It's the results that count. I watched Infernal Affairs when it came out and I recently watched The Departed. The film was SO similar to IA that I couldn't even finish watching it since I basically know what's gonna happen next. I've seen too many parodies/remakes of the original that I can't stand to watch another one even if it's in English with big shot actors and directors. I often found myself seeking dialogue similarities between the two films, how can you say it's not copied?

@nsdq12345 so what do you expect them to do anyway? Flash a disclaimer "THIS IS A REMAKE OF INFERNAL AFFAIRS" every 5 mins in the movie? What constitutes proper credit? It isn't the movie's fault that other people are ignorant.

the departed ripped off everything from this movie. It came out before the departed, and the director of the departed just copied everything from infernal affairs

wow people say this is better than the departed? the scenes in this movie are WAY over the top and melodramatic with the music making it much cornier than needed, its not a bad movie but it seems like people will die defending their precious theory of "nothing beats the original", scorsese has a much more realistic and grittier tone to his movies, which is what a storyline like this really needs, music is only necessary to convey emotion if the cinematography failed to do so itself, sorry guys

everybody has different preferences. Like you prefer the more realistic, hard-hitting type of scene or if you like the dramatic and emotional scene. It's the director's preference to add music or not, and it certainly captured the emotion of many people but not all, obviously like people yourself. It doesn't make it a failure just because you don't like it, just how Sorcese's scene wasn't a failure just because I don't like it.

@@tofueats5346 I am from Mainland China. I think most of Eastern Asians would prefer the oringin to the remake, as the scenes seem deeper like a traditional painting. We like those hidden meanings in concise contexts or scenes. But to the Westerners, they like direct and logical stuff. Some comments of these two vers just come from what we get used to in our cultures. Hard to convince the other side. Hahaha.

Scorcese totally failed badly in that remake, it was a horrible movie imo. hahaha ... the chinese version is so much better and original

Yeah I noticed that too, but I just had to say it XD
On a more serious note, firstly internal affairs had a MUCH better end, where you understand that the bad guy would have given anything to be like the main char, and he says it literally in the flashback from the police academy (forgot names, sorry). Secondly, it is f:ed up that Departed can recieve all that Oscars for someone else's film.
