    Father Fish was a huge influence in me choosing dirted tanks too. i started my freshwater from a repurposed spa, so the amount i have is prolly 150 gallons. I keep my stock low too my pond only has a handfull of goldfish and a handfull of minnows and a handfull of endlers with loads of mystery snails. My saltwater tank i started as a 20 long with 2 clownfish. After 4 months (and the new tank syndrome stuff passed) i got a 60 gallon and made it a dirted tank so i can have mangrove trees. i topped it with everything else from the 20 long so it didnt smother beneficial stuff. Our place loses power a lot so i have to make sure everything can run off minimal life support so i use undergravel filters below the deep sandbeds. I try to make sure everything has food web to source from and they have been so fun to develop.

    Do you have experience with a variety of substrates in a deep substrate system, or are you just assuming aqua soils are more likely safer than dirt? Also, if you want quicker growth for root-feeding plants newly planted in the substrate: When setting up the tank, I would put down the first inch of sand over the soil, sprinkle ferts from crushed root tabs and such over that, then put the next inch of sand down over it. Yes, this will likely create some algae issues, so you'd want snails in there pretty fast.

      The reason I recommend aqua soil for beginners is simply because it’s easier to mess with and less messy, less overwhelming!

      @@TalisaAquarist Really? As an occasional gardener, I can never understand why people have a problem playing with dirt :P Now, for people who like to tear down and set up new tanks all the time, that's a different story.

    What sand to use? Will
    Beach sand work ?

      Beach sand would work great! As long as it is legal to take the sand! Or most any sand from your local fish store is great as well!

      I am so sorry to hear that! What did you use for substrate in the tank?

    • @kenetromeokunder8213
      @kenetromeokunder8213 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was aqua soil an few tissue culture plants....

      @TalisaAquarist  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Okay, the aqua soil wasn’t capped with sand then? When the aqua soil isn’t capped it releases ammonia into the tank, I’m guessing that’s what killed the shrimp, I would wait at least a month or 2 before adding anything into the tank again, and do some water changes before adding fish. Unless you cap it off with sand.

      May b it's to early for me to add shrimps.... I hav already set one mre tank, wid gravel and added root tabs an den aqua soil... And added few spider rocks and few plants... And few tetras and corydory... And I'm using hang on filters.. Wen i added my corydorys after some time, dey wer reaching for surface.... To take air... So shld I add air pump for it or hang on is enuf?

      If you’re using filters for the corydoras then you shouldn’t need air pumps, Cory’s come to the surface for air on a regular basis.
