    The spark plug issues were fixed by late 2008, the biggest hit against those later 5.4's is the timing issues.

    My dad has an 06 F-150 with the 5.4 V8 and he hasn’t had any major issues during his 7 years of ownership. They can be good reliable motors when properly maintained (huge emphasis on that). If you can find one that’s fleet maintained or has good service records, don’t hesitate buying it!

  • @NickTarterOKC
    @NickTarterOKC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve got 160,000 miles on my 5.4 Triton 3 valve. 05 F150 with original engine. I expect it to go for a long time yet. It’s been pretty much reliable. I’ve only had to make a few repairs over the years. The biggest issue with them is that people don’t maintain them properly. I would imagine a police version would be very well maintained.

    The Charger Pursuit (especially 2015+) have THE BEST interior creature comforts that you can get on a police package, compared to Ford and Chevy. Touchscreen radio, Smart key access, pushbutton start, bluetooth, leather-wrapped steering wheel, etc and all standard equipment. It's nice that one has the admin style full length center console too! The 12.1'' touchscreen was only an option for around $2,200. I've had two Chargers, both civilian models but always wanted a Pursuit model. Currently have a 2018 Charger R/T and they're great cars! Congrats on the buy and can't wait for your full review on it!

    Also, cam phasers in the Triton 5.4 make it a loser along with the long laundry list of issues you mentioned.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point about cam phasers and those 5.4 Triton's. Just add that to the list to issues with that engine and it's enough to make you run away.

    • @moonbeamskies3346
      @moonbeamskies3346 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They should have used the good old 5.0 or 5.8 pushrod engines that were bulletproof and ran forever.

    • @b-genspinster7895
      @b-genspinster7895 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moonbeamskies3346 you make a good point. Of course the coyote 5.0 is now an option along with the proven eco boost power plants. That said, I can’t fault Ford for trying to be innovative with the Triton family. Unfortunately, R&D is sometimes done at the consumer’s expense when there isn’t sufficient time to vet new designs. GM isn’t exempt either. Piston slap, exhaust rumble from the early vortec’s along with excessive oil consumption from loosely tuned valve specs and East Coast’s favorite; dod. GM is doing well, I think, with the mature ecotec’s as is Ford with its platforms. 5.0 and the 5.8 are great engines.

    • @mph5896

      I don't blame you. GM is in my blood, but its a love/hate relationship. MY mothers last car was an 09 Malibu. Bought it from the government with 60k. She drove it for 5 years and 50k. It was reliable, BUT I had to repair it ALOT. 4 cylinder, timing chain, VVT solenoids, throttle body, brake switch wiring, plus normal matinence. I pushed her into a new CRV last year and she loves it.

    Hey Chris. Liked the Crown Vic. You're seeing less of them on the road. I have an 07 Marquis GS with only 68 K. Has been a great car so far. Its my fourth Marquis. I'm hoping she'll hold up for a while. Have been holding out on a plug change as I heard they are a pain in the butt to replace. Two real sore spots: It is like riding a greased pig in the winter and if the blend door actuator needs replaced, it's a major ordeal.

    Always enjoy these videos! I was in a brand new rented Toyota 4Runner this week and it immediately made me think of a Jeep Cherokee (I was actually trying to remember what the inside of the Jeep looked like - so this was a treat). There's a lot of similarities when it comes to how simple both are. Looking at that CVPI makes me appreciate mine even more - glad I'm keeping it inside my workshop now - that rust on the auction car was hard to look at. I'm curious how you like the Charger. FHP sells a ton of them down here, but they are in way worse condition - they love hitting the tan with the black paint (rattle can or dirty roller) and they usually have 150K+ miles on them with some closer to 200K - even in that condition they sell around $6-7K for the newer body style like yours. I do notice that many are listed as "noisy engine" so make sure you check it over really good. Great video as always!

    Great video as usual! Looking forward to seeing the charger! FYI those expeditions are great vehicles. Yeah those 5.4s had problems but the last year run should be fine. Got a buddy with a explorer with the 5.4 with 275k no issues running well. Did plugs on it without issue. It's a 2005 model. They are hit and miss but I'd assume by that last year most of the issues fixed. They are in demand, that big style and v8 was a dying breed. That's why it went for so much, why didn't you start it?

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I really liked that Expedition. I was super surprised by just how nice that thing was both inside and out. I'm convinced it came from a fire department given just how well cared for it looked. That's just what they do, you know. Here in Delaware there is an annual competition amongst the different fire departments in the state and one of the events is a 'show and shine'. And you're right about that Expedition being the last of the breed. Big V8, less electronic gizmos than newer SUV's, a great look.... I just didn't spend much more time with it, and start it, with all the bad news I've read about the engine. That's what really kept me away from it.

    Its disappointing on the mechanical issues on these police vehicles now. Civilian use, you don't see it as much, but DOD made engines complete disasters. I still buy them since I can fix them BUT.
    2015 Tahoe, I have seen a bunch with bad transmissions. Wonder what the issue is? Plus they have direct injection new for 15 and DOD
    Chargers, they eat through lifters and camshafts but are a blast to drive.
    Expeditions, yes the 5.4l 3v is not a strong engine. I have had a few with good luck. Had a 2009 North Carolina police one with 4wd a few years back with 230k on it.
    Ford 3.5/3.7. Internal water pump driven by timing chain. What were they thinking. I just bought a 16 Explorer today though, going to pick it up. Its a police package used by Friend of the court to pick up dead beat dads. Unmarked. Has timing chain issues with 105k. We will see how that turns out.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love your overview of cop car issues and it all makes the Crown Vic even more endearing. I'm gonna be curious to hear what your thoughts are on the '16 Explorer you're getting. I like them and the Taurus and have heard about the water pumps. On the turbo engines I'm always skeptical about those turbos even though I haven't heard much problems about them. And I didn't know about the 2015 Tahoe's being direct injection. That probably explains the horsepower bump to 355, which is the same as the 6 liter in the Caprice.

  • @southhillfarm2795
    @southhillfarm2795 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 5.4 litre is not a problematic engine. Most owners will just leave the spark plugs in and they last at least 200000 miles. So just drive it and enjoy. in 3 years it's scrap metal and the owner would have had a good truck for 3 years and maybe $7000. That's a good deal.

    • @freeandresrivera
      @freeandresrivera 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding with the 5.4 is stay away but the sludge related issues would be from lack of maintenance. I would consider one if it had all service records or was a fleet (govt, utility) vehicle b/c those are probably well maintained.

    • @mph5896
      @mph5896 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2009+ they redesigned the spark plugs. Super easy to get out and they are a non issue. BUT they have oil supply issues to the right head, cam follower issues, vvt solenoid issues.

    Its funny how KBB claims so many values. Yet when you do a cash offer it is way less. Edmunds to me is more realistic. Cause you can factor in so many issues to tires and body damage, interior etc.... The expedition does have a 6 speed you only can shift 3 gears manually. I think with the non ssv model with the floor shifter has the option. I know my 08 ssv when I had it had a 6 speed.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, good to know about Edmunds. I'll give them a try when working out pricing. And thanks for clarifying about the 6 speed transmission too. Strange thing with the Chargers is that the civilian models get an 8 speed but police models get an older 5 speed. Chrysler says it's something to do with the column shifter but I'm skeptical. And as always, thanks for stopping by.

      @@hullinger you're welcome. Yeah I've battled for years with sellers on value cause they always went off of kbb but the real world value is so much different. That's probably why chrysler did that for the chargers and also for café standards which most police vehicles really don't go by lol.
