Fun fact: George Lucas was going to have a trained monkey wearing a mask play Yoda at one point, until someone experienced with primate handling told him that the monkey would just keep pulling off the mask. Hence the decision to turn to Jim Hensen and make a puppet instead.
I don’t think that people realise that for every awesome idea or concept George Lucas has had, there is an equal or greater terrible idea. That’s why I will never forgive Ron Howard for turning down the offer to direct Episode 1. 😭

"15 unused Star Wars costumes that Disney doesn't want you to see" *Disney proceeds to use old concept art and costumes as inspiration for Rebels and other pieces of media*
This is why creators shouldn't be afraid to cut anything or replace/update ideas. Focus on a strong story and any unused concepts can be reimplemented under a new idea. A lot of the creative process involves Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling.
there is an unused concept art for the stromtroopers, they originally had lightsabers and shields, imagine if they kept that btw Darth Maul's first appearance looks like a figure from a horror movie
as I recall hearing George Lucas told Darth Maul's designer to draw something from his nightmares and the night before he started designing Maul he had a nightmare of that child-like figure with the red strips and of course had to draw it
@@h4724-q6j My recollection of the story is that the artist's worst nightmare was that face staring through his window at night during a rainstorm, the red stripes representing the water streaks on the window. Lucas told him to go with his second-worst nightmare.
This ^^^ Imagine if ESB had gnome Yoda and scenes where Wampas flop around during the Battle of Hoth. Concept art only represents ideas, good or bad, what _could have_ made it into the final product, not what necessarily _would have._
Fun little detail; the comic version of Jabba was actually based on one of the original cantina aliens (before they shot new footage in LA). You can see him having a drink near Han right after he tosses the coin to the bartender, and a slightly different version is also seen in the streets when Luke sells his speeder.
It's almost like Concept Art is just brainstorming until the director decides what they want to do and it isn't indicative of an actual finalized movie.
I love that J.J. Abrams went back tom some of McQuarrie's 1975 sketches for Force Awakens. The design of Po's X-Wing with the half-cylinder engines was straight out of his sketchbook, as was the slinky little wolf-dude we see as we enter Mas Kanata's cantina.
Most of the concept art here, the Ralph MacQuarrie ones in particular, were used in Star Wars Rebels. The early Ewok and big walkie thingy for TFA appears in SW Resistance.
It's to believe that most of these concepts get used in something else. That early Stromer trooper shock trooper design being reused for Mandalorian imperials is the best example. Also someone needs to review those old Marvel Star Wars
It's cool knowing that alot of the old concept art from Ralph made their way into current day Star Wars shows , movies, and books! Great video, love the work you do!!! Happy Valentines day to you and everyone here!!
3:32 looks like the 8th? Brother Inquisitor. Also, I had a Star Wars visual guide with a picture of the spider at 3:07, used to give some horrible vibes.
The white boba fett wasnt concept for boba at all. It was fir a new elite trooper. However the time and cost for the prototype suit lead to him being coloured and named and the bounty hu ter scene was written leading to a rewright of ep5. Boba was norn as a result.
number 10 speaks about the consistency of old EU some fans like to talk about (and George saying he had everything in his mind prior to making the movies, and not a collaborative effort of making stuff as they went along). I love those old marvel comics, and i would make peace with Disney-lucasfilm-starwars if Don Wan Kihote gets canonized (maybe Jaxxon too).
I actually dig the original Darth Maul with read dreads. Imagine it as maybe the size of a 12/13 year old girl with a banshee like voice and screams and some of the crackling noises of the demon in The Ring or the Curse. Some hissing, very fast and acrobatic movements combined with evil diabolical smiles. Damn that would have been awesome!!!
Technically the Alderaan and Coruscant pieces weren't film concept art as they were painted for The Illustrated Star Wars Universe book which was published in 1995. It's a great book with beautiful McQuarrie art throughout.
7 would later be the inspiration for the Vader's Mustafar castle 8 Would later be adapted into Cloud City and Corusscant 9 Would be adapted into the Night sisters, especially the zombified variety 18 would become one of the Inquisitors The message here is that many ideas are created and left on the cutting room floor for ideas that are better for those situations. Disney do not have the time of day to be poking their heads over the creator's shoulders and going "We love what you're doing but we think this chair has a few too many spikes on it"

True, but Finn leading an rebellion of ex-stormtroopers against First Order walkers in the war torn streets of Coruscant is pretty epic.
I actually really like how Disney has reused some old unused concept art in stuff such as Rebels and the Marvel comics series.
Could you imagine if Yoda ended up just being a garden gnome?
Those Cloud City guards in that old concept art reminded me of the guards in Canto Bite.
