The Orbans support comes from the rural areas, in most part. Orban ferried them in huge numbers from the rural areas into the cities to vote and dilute the pro-western voters so in the spirit of it, it's cheating. However it's not cheating by the letter of the law. This should be banned as it's clearly organized effort to affect the vote. The rural citizens are the generally the least educated, oldest and most in favour of the old nationalistic mentality. That's why they are very unlikely to comment here in large numbers. Those who are defending Orban are very often getting paid by by someone to spew nonsense in defense of the Hungarian-russian alliance.

NATO's first secretary general, Hastings "Pug" Ismay, famously declared that the organization's mission was "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down." NATO's mission has not changed in the more than seventy years since 1952 when the organisation founded to oppose the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union fell apart more than thirty years ago, and Russia is not the Soviet Union of old, and left Eastern Europe voluntarily leaving NATO without a mission, and yet the U.S. occupation forces remained in Germany consistent with the original NATO mission statement mentioned above? Russian President VIladimir Putin has claimed that he once raised the possibility of Russia joining NATO with then-President Bill Clinton, and that Clinton said he had "no objection." America remains as committed as ever to keeping the Germans down and preventing Europe from becoming a peer competitor by sabotaging Germany's burgeoning economic co-operation and partnership with Russia, which would have benefited all of us, and this was most vividly demonstrated by the destruction of Nordstream by the U.S., effectively an act of war on Germany. The war in Ukraine was supposed to accomplish two American foreign policy objectives, the first being to bring Russia to its knees economically and the second being to weaken Germany and Europe. Whilst the U.S. has failed abjectly in achieving the first objective, the EU appears to be trapped in a death spiral with industry now unable to rely on cheap energy from Russia relocating out of Germany and the EU while America profits from substituting it's own more expensive gas and it's insatiable Military Industrial Complex earning bilions from supplying new arms and ammunition to Ukraine and to replenish depleted European stocks.
I'm not an economist but I don't see the sense in getting rid of outside companies, except oligarchs benefitting, and inevitably screwing the Hungarian people, as no foreign investment would be there. It's all very well keeping all businesses Hungarian, but without EU funding the only way the economy grows is by the people spending their own money, unless Orban thinks he will capitalise on tourism, which would be a bit of a gamble, if there will be an airline left to book a ticket. One of the reasons the EU withheld funding, was suspicions that Orban was channelling it to his friends and family, in very dodgy deals. It seems there is more plans afoot for Orban profiteering, but it would now seem likely, without EU money.
He just want to get rid of some companies. The ones that his oligarch friends can take over and remove foreign competition from local market. The car manufacturers he does not touch because they relocate and they will just get in the end an empty warehouse and a lot of unemployed people
@LubosMedovarsky I couldn't agree more. Orban, closing the country in through nationalist protectionism while fomenting anti Western sentiment in Hungary. Putin's school... After all, his friend and ally. Nationalism is the last refuge of communism.
A few countries joined the EU too early, without the majority of its people embracing its ideas and ideals. EU loses the UK but keeps Hungary, go figure.
Western companies' assets confiscated in Russia, heavy fines to foreign companies for all sorts of reasons and excuses in China, special taxes levied against foreign companies in Hungary. Isn't the lesson & conclusion very simple and clear? Do NOT invest in places with authoritarian regimes or dictatorships where there's no fair play or real rule of law!
Yes only the Americans have rights to freeze foreign assets and sanction poor countries like CUBA which by the way is now a state sponsor of terrorism according to the lily-white United States. So much for moral superiority.
Am I right in thinking that the (dis) respected Western investors are whining because the government is favouring Hungarian companies, and they are losing the resources they have been sucking away from Hungary, which is seen as a colony?
Eastern European countries had to comply with many regulations upon joining the EU, which harmed their economy and agriculture. So I would dare to disagree. Eastern European countries had very little debt and most of the economy was still owned by the state. Under the pressure of the EU, these countries switched to the privatization model, and it was a real El Dorado for the rich Western countries. One of the consequences is that cheap electricity is produced in Eastern Europe and it goes on the stock market, and Eastern European countries buy it more expensively than Western countries. Eastern Europe is a modern colony.
This the way how the East Europeans have become exploited cheap workers in their own homelands. In Hugary the government even guaranteed 5 years of tax exemption to multinationals plus extra help with infra-structure costs. So they got our factories and markets for literally nothing.
Those affected firms should leave, Hungary is not that big of a country to matter that much, but before leaving, disable your facilities is such way to render them unusable by HU. They make special laws targeting individual companies, they use the police and tax authoritizes to make the companies life impossible until they get them. Really, nothing wrong with it.
In itself it is not a problem. However, Hungary signed up to be in the EU, and one of the central principles of the EU is freedom of movement of firms/goods/services across the EU. If they want to have their own nationals in charge of their firms, they need to leave or be thrown out of the EU. I'm not in the EU and don't particularly care which way Hungary decides to go, but they signed up for precisely this when they joined the EU.
As China keeps telling India every now and then that it is the “eternal” neighbour, so does Russia keep reminding Europe I guess, though through more direct western approach.
Hang on, aren't these practices non-democratic and run foul of EU requirements? If so, wouldn't it then give the EU the legal authority to kick Hungary out of the EU? I know the EU doesn't have any rules on removing members from the union, but if a member no longer governs in accordance to the requirements of the union's membership, surely that means it's acting against the union which should be enough grounds for expulsion.

Please exclude people of Budapest. We are the only region in the EU who consider themselves to be europian before anything else, as we are disappointed in the rest of the country.

Nope.
Yes only the Americans have rights to freeze foreign assets and sanction poor countries like CUBA which by the way is now a state sponsor of terrorism according to the lily-white United States. So much for moral superiority.
Well, another hit piece on Hungary because they behave as a sovereign country.
Good for Orban.

What is wrong with sovereign countries wanting businesses run by their own nationals? Here in Australia foreign companies are constantly circumventing our tax laws, leaving our people at a financial disadvantage. Governments solely exist to serve the interests of the people who elect them in the territory under their control.
