      All that talent on top of going to school full time and participating in other sports, and training less than half the time other elites train. That either speaks to her talent, or says having a normal life makes for a better gymnast. Or both.

It’s why the 1996 girls all looked so thin but you want them healthy and if their not eating than it will cause the body to attack the mucel and it’s why injuries occur more

    People obsess so much over Biles but I personally find the athletes like Johnson, especially Johnson, more pleasing to watch and also so fantastic. Sure, Biles can do the most difficult skills but they didn't even exist (including most skills that weren't invented by Biles or first competed by Biles) when Johnson was competing, and who knows, she may have been able to do a lot of those skills herself. But what I ALWAYS find lacking in Biles' routines is the elegance. She has the muscles and power and definitely knows how to use them to throw hard ass skills, but she lacks the grace and elegance that makes a poetic statement and thus a connection with many of us watching. She CONSTANTLY takes huge leaps while pretty out of control of her landings (especially on floor) and things because she's putting far too much power into everything she does instead of letting the artistry blend in. Biles is amazing in her own right and incredibly impressive in many ways. I do enjoy seeing what new skill she's decided to give a go, but I miss the grace and elegance while also doing hard elements we saw with Johnson, Liuken and so many others. I wish they were all the same age so we could see them all compete NOW and try the SAME skills to see what differences we'd see between all their styles. It would be so amazing if they'd all been competing at the same time.

    There was evidence of just how far she'd go in just 3 yrs from this event. It was so tragic that she got hurt in a skiing accident prior to her second chance at an Olympic event. I think she could have easily eclipsed the total medal count at that time for a USA gymnast.(Shannon Miller and later Simone Biles with 7.) I think that with today's surgical technology she could have returned to her prior level. She got hurt in 2009.

    • @hazelnutspred3348
      @hazelnutspred3348 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@rachelplows3001 that's not particularly true. They can hit 180, it's doesnt look like it because people compare that to over split and hyper extending the legs like the Russians and chinese do. Not to mention, the americans have been much more muscular in the 2000s quads, so that also makes it look like they don't hit 180. They struggle more with body shape in the air. Theres really only a select few cases of american gymnasts that cant hit 180 consistently like aly raisman, or just not at all like mykayla skinner

    • @rachelmarie2228
      @rachelmarie2228 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      People don't seem to understand that hitting 180° in a leap requires flexibility and strength and technique. It is not just a flexibility skill. There are many athletes who could hit a split, even an oversplit while on the ground stretching easily, but cannot manage to hit 180° while in the air.
      That isn't because they aren't flexible. That is a matter of strength and technique.
      Shawn's body type also doesn't lead to impressive splits and leaps though. Even when her leaps definitely hit 180° they often look significantly less.

    • @__Tiziana__
      @__Tiziana__ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rachelmarie2228 Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm definitely not an expert, but I think I've read somewhere that it is also a matter of passive flexibility (which is required by most of static stretches, like a normal split on the floor) versus active flexibility; the latter, as you said, requires strength and mobility, so a very different use of the muscles involved.

      She practiced much less hours than other elite gymnasts. Chow made sure she had a normal childhood along with sport. She didn’t have to home school and do 40 hours a week in a gym. She was like Simone, natural air awareness and strength. Her routine just two years later was much much much more difficult so chow paced her well.
