  • What's it like to represent your country in the world's biggest Vets Motocross festival when you've never finished a race on a twin-shock before?
    Former British two-stroke champ Dave Willet takes us on his journey from rookie Vets MXDN racer to the podium, racing around the historic Farleigh Castle track in England.
    And check out something very few will ever experience - a whole on-board lap as Dave takes the holeshot and leads the race on a bike that rolled off the production line when he was just a one-year-old!

    Maico was king of the big bore two strokes back in the day it seems. That maico490 is sweet looking especially with those black wheels

      You're correct, had two of them and I could do tricks on the Maico that could not be done on "modern" bikes

    Great seeing you out on the track, the 490 is a fun bike to ride, nice broad power band with decent handling and feel. I sold my 490 a few years ago prior to retiring but still get to see it race on a few times a year here on the northwest coast of the US. Vintage racing keeps the hearts beating in the older boys who still can throw a leg over a fun older machine. Half the fun is seeking out and building the old stuff to compete again on track, cheers to you on riding a good race at Farleigh.

    That was just great you taking us old guys around Farleigh Castle because the last time I was down there was when Dave Thorpe was world Champion & having a go was just a dream to me until I did 85 - 92 in my mid 30s until the body said now is the time to just dream about being a world champion.. Hope you keep enjoying & stay safe as you get older..

    Not taking anything away from the four stroke guys, but if you've never ridden a 2 stroke and experienced the explosion that happens between your legs everytime you pull the loud handle.....watching it is one thing, feeling it is another.
    I bought a new 1976 KX250 , and as I waited for delivery, I watched the tech that had assembled it and set it up, test ride it out behind the shop on a dirt strip.....the front wheel would touch the ground ONLY after he backed off the throttle.....you could get in trouble very quickly thanks to a suspension that could just barely hang on......I told my main trail racing guy back in the day I'd never sell that motorcycle, and I haven't. Still fires right up, and will still scare the Jesus out of you!

    That bike was really nice ! The competition at that race is ridiculous ! It looked like the suspension was working perfect for that sharp bumpy chattery track. You did 👍 . If Kurt Nichol was in the race , you are not going to beat that 57 year old beast. He rides here in Southern California ever week and wins the Vet Championship.

    I remember it was around the mid-1980's and I was at Washougal Washington, USA at the National motocross races. It was the year that Mark Barnett, ( taking first in the 125cc class). Maico had their factory rider ("Danny Clover" perhaps?) Regardless he was making Macio look bad because he was trailing in the race, so as an attempt to catch up he was table topping the down hill portion of the track literally landing on the flat part of the track after each down hill segment, and braking the frame on both factory bikes that they had brought thus making Macio DF for both races.

      @davidanderson2393 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Washougal is a tuff track with its hill sections and clay in the dirt, great place for many years and still today for motocross events, hope it can hang on for years to come.

    I remember the time Marty Smith smoked the open class on a 125 Elsinore back in the 70's....yeah, I'm that old, and the open class MX bikes were really on-off converted for racing.....but man, that took stainless steel cojones....RIP Marty

    • @billallen4793

      I was the proud owner of a 1976 Elsinore 125 works bike. That I bought new in the crate from a dealer in Napa California where I lived for 8mos back in 1986-1987 for $700.00 buck's every dollar I'd saved, on the condition that I assembled it at there shop, under the owner's supervision, after school on my day's off from work and raced in vintage races, in the dinosaur class. It was WAY more bike than the regular cr125 Elsinore. Different suspension, swingarm, pipe, carb, porting, and compression ratio. Unfortunately I was forced to leave it when we moved back to Wyoming....from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠

    uh....those were called "forward mounted laid down" shocks, they were a MASSIVE improvement over the older setups but you younger guys have NO idea how good we have it today with the mono shock setups, cuzz that old stuff sucked.

    Don't Road Race the corner's so much, ( road race type line ) use the burms. ( outside line through the corner , like a bobsled ) When you're going really fast in the dirt you can't turn unless you have a burm or something to turn off of.
