  • Go on board with MotoHead's Dave Willet as he races the best ever twin shock two-stroke, a 1981 Maico 490, on one of the world's most famous circuits, Farleigh Castle.
    Crank up the volume as the sweet-sounding Maico rips around the old-school track in the grounds of historic Farleigh Castle national monument in the Kings of the Castle meeting.

    Man does this bring back memories! THIS is what motocross tracks in the states looked like back in the 70's. There were a few jumps here and there, but there were straightaways too and man did we make up lost time there! And we were right there with those 2 shocks Maico 450 radial head badasses. Power out the yakazoo and rooster tails with nice mouth banging rocks in them. Obviously this was long before the full face helmets you see today and we took many an irish bullet to the nose and mouth. I even remember the night before the 1974 National at Red Bud, the party at the Honda shop in Niles, MI. Brad Lackey, Jim Pomeroy, Marty Smith, Tommy Croft, Rodger Decoster, Garret Wolsink.
    And no Ray R. I have not forgotten our old friendship! You were a good friend to me, thanks. I won't forget you.

    I raced MX in the heyday of the 70's. I rode a Bultaco 175, TM 250, RM 125, YZ 400 and the last and by far the best bike I raced was a Maico 400. I got a deal on it because everyone wanted the 490. The 400 had more than enough power except maybe for the pros. The power band and handling was just amazing compared to the other bikes of that era. Everyone who rode that bike got off of it with a big grin on their face. I sure wish I had it now as I believe they rare.

    Nice riding, nice video, nice track, nice comments. Brought back lots of memories. I think I'll go out to the garage and take my old 84wr 400 for a spin. Bought it new and it's still gives me a rush. Ain't nothing like a big bore 2 stroke.

    Wow man that was some serious bar bangn block passn, clearing the uphill dbl, wfo off the downhill jumps, serious MOTO !! What a pleasure watching some 490s ridden to their true potential. The iconic frame geometry that honda copied. That #427 bike got some serious power wheeling down the straight hooked up on the pipe for the holeshot !!! Awesome torquey throttle control on those hard pack flat turns 🤙I love those 490 maicos, especially with the updated suspension. Im surprised they dont convert them to disc brakes. Truely a pleasure to watch. These guys can ride !

    That was awesome! When I was 15 I rode a 1983 490 Maico, first year of the single shock I believe, while the owner flogged my YZ125. Ill never ever forget the way it felt, from the stiff clutch pull, to the sound etc. You guys were absolutely flying!

      @Vince, funny another odd thing absolutely imprinted in my brain are the red leather covers that said “Magura” on them that covered the pivot point of the clutch and brake levers. Up until then I had only read about the mysterious Magura levers and throttles in Dirt Bike and MXA. My buddy Seans Maico couldnt have had more than 30 minutes on it from brand new, so everything was super clean etc, but those Maguras, they were polished and looked incredible next to my shorty Dehandler levers. Its funny what we retain right? This video has really brought back some memories

    Awesome stuff. Great to see a 490 Maico taking control! Maico were the most popular motocross bikes in the late 70s and early 80s, but sadly company issues and lack of development led to their sad demise. If they'd have kept going, they would be turning out amazing bikes, probably very similar to the great KTMs and Huskies. Great stuff, and nice 'clean' overtake, over the back. Excellent track, too!👍😎

    • @julianlaustsen1991
      @julianlaustsen1991 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      what led to their demise was the failure of the 82-83 490. a person even died because the rear hub exploded on the 82 model.

    Twin brother and I each had Maico 490 Enduro bikes, yes, street legal because the docs that came with the bikes had open check boxes: This bike is ___ or is not ____ street legal. Guess which we checked. Threw a "tailight: on there, itty bitty rear-view and a bike horn and you got a license plate. WOW, what power. What a blast.

    That looks like such a blast . It reminds me of my youth . At my friends house riding a YZ 125 on the track we built . Lots of fun. It's crazy I learned how to ride on a two stroke . So much harder to learn on . Do to the way the power is delivered . I will never forget this one kid who thought he was Joe pro rider of the year . With his 1975 Yamaha 250 Enduro. He made the mistake of racing me for 50 bucks I was on a 1986 Cr 125 it was new back then . He was all bla .bla . bla. Honda is a girl's bike that 125 ain't sh!+ Oh OK if you say so there big boy . So needless to say he was smoked super bad . Then the funny part came when I let him ride it . He looped it . I told him when you hole shot you have to almost be sitting on the gas tank. Not Joe pro who insisted I had a CR 500 motor in my bike . Nope just 10 years of technology and 150lbs . Thankfully another kid had a CR 125 and once he raced that dude he figured it out .
