  • ** I misspoke on this video. Longer stretches are better than shorter stretches. Gentle stretches are better than more forceful stretches.**
On this playlist, I review the basic static stretches I do at my clinic. I actually don't do a lot of static stretches and prefer stretches through movement. The research is mixed on the value of static stretching. In fact, in children with cerebral palsy, the research points to short-term duration stretching being ineffective. Use of equipment, such as standers and orthotics that can be used/worn for longer durations are much more effective. In general, the longer you hold a stretch the more effective it is. Bouncing at end range is discouraged and may cause injury. Stretches should not be painful. Alignment is critical. Watch for sneaky substitutions that make the stretch less effective. I usually perform an active movement exercise involving the muscle group before I stretch it. Then I make sure I use the muscle group in an activity after stretching to allow the child to use the new range of motion. Make sure a child does not hold his breath during stretching. Breathing into the movement encourages relaxation of the muscle group.

I want to thank Andrew's family who took time out of their day to allow Andrew to help. Andrew could not have been more perfect. At 4 years old, he is extremely cooperative. I was lucky to have such a handsome and easy co-instructor. It is also important to me to have diversity in my co-instructors. So thank you, Andrew.
I am so honored to have people from all over the world watch my videos. I have reviewed and corrected the closed captions for this video so that you might understand what I am saying even if you don't speak English. I hope the directions below are helpful to you.
