This is a great video & my favorite because it's actually so relevant to what's happening at this point in History. I'm surprised you haven't tried recreating the battlefield in Ukraine & tried different types of Assaults. Sure it would be impossible to be 100% accurate but you could come close.
Yeh there are a million things I want to try but realistically I can only do max 4-5 wargames per week, and there is just never enough time to really get into it.
Unless a tank can shrug off the blast from a sub-munition, in which case it's viable if you only put tanks down the road. (More likely it would at least destroy a track, even if it's fixable it's a problem).
With the clusterbombs you kind of create a new minefield for infantry^^ With 500 lb bombs you destroy your road, so we need more Gau 8's on the battlefield^^
I did. 20 minutes of flight for four aircraft? About $29K sans ammo. Of course, those aircraft would have to be loitering for who-knows-how-long just to be prepared for that and I didnt calculate expendables. An APOBS is $11K.
The trenches tend to zigzag. A-10 strafes in a straight line. Apache is a better option for guns. HE rockets are even better for either platform against trenches.
Maybe some line charges mounted to aircraft hard points would be effective at clearing mines. Probably have to hover while firing which would make Apache a good option. 2 to 4 line charges could probably be carried. They could be slightly angled outwards to create a cleared wedge.
The disadvantage of using a MICLIC on the ground is that it is exposed to fire for a long period of time. A helicopter carried line charge could greatly reduce the time of exposure and bring some firepower too to help suppress nearby ground forces.
In some of the units I was in, we used to use the Bradley's 25mm Bushmaster HE rounds on the minefield as part of the mine breaching doctrine. This was done before approaching the minefield on foot to breach it. The idea wasn't to necessarily kill the AT mines, though a direct hit would set one off but to try and clear the Anti-Personnel mines mixed in with the AT mines. A proper AT minefield would AP mines mixed in to hamper breaching attempts.
Something ideal for this scenario would be the M58 Mine Clearing Line Charge (MICLIC) which clears a 100 m by 8 m area. I highly recommend looking up some footage of the MICLIC in use on YT because the explosion simply looks AWESOME.
This is exactly why I came to the comments. I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve seen an M58 do it’s thing in real life, and I will never forget the experience. It was literally designed for exactly this scenario!!
Both Ukraine and Russia have MICLIC systems. If deploying a few of these line charges would be sufficient to open up the lanes, it would have been done by now. But there are probably several reasons why this isn't the case, including depth and width of the minefields, that there is not just one belt but many (several lines of defense, composed of several belts or clusters of mines), vulnerability of the MICLIC vehicles, etc. The US, NATO, and Ukraine are pouring vast intellectual and intelligence resources into figuring out how to get through these minefields - so it must truly be a daunting challenge - not to say that there arent solutions which the US/NATO arent considering, such as covert carpet bombing of the mine fields and defensive lines with JDAMs, JSOWs, etc. Since these are being given to Ukraine, a B-2 dropping them standoff, undetected by Russian radar, might be deniable. After all - if all Russia has for proof of a strike is the remains of US-made munitions, that says nothing as these are being overtly provided.
@@lippertwe What is bro waffling about? 😉 I think everything that we said was about the situation from the video which is basically a dream scenario for the MICLIC - you need to clear a narrow passage through a minefield quickly. Ukraine’s strategic situation, large-scale mine clearance, etc. is a different can of worms. Of course, I agree that it’s not that simple when you need to mount a mass counter-offensive and worry about vast minefields. One obvious problem is that when you travel through a narrow choke point, like the one created by the line charge, you become an easy target for artillery, airstrikes, etc.
Five A-10 should pack 6750 cannon rounds and 10000 Mk82 sub-munitions. If the minefield is 1km long and 25m wide, that's almost 1 munition every 1m2. Quite decent, especially with explosive rounds. But i would ask for a second pass...
Normally, I'd agree with Bill Murray and say, "Don't drive on the railroad tracks," but in this case? Seems like a better plan. Are thermobarics not an option? I would think overpressure would do the trick, unless the mines will only explode if they're magnetically activated. I would not want to be in Tank #1, though.
Shame there's no thermobaric weapons in DCS. They're all about pressure. Cluster bombs are basically scattering a fresh minefield, the reason why there's an international treaty banning them. The GAU worked so how about a few IFV's with autocannons from ground level? Cheaper than A-10's?
For the gun it looks like it would need a few degrees of automatic gimbal to accurately track the road. It feels like there's a gap in the market for tiny mine clearing drones with thermal cameras and little bit of RDX, used after sunset. The micro drones could be dispersed from a slow helicopter or cruise missile type thing with its own thermal camera.
Yea, more Ukraine videos please. There’s lots happening there right now and it would be great to do a bunch of missions there. Whether it’s the S-400 destruction, Kerch bridge destruction or anything else, please please please more Crimea and Ukraine action.

I was thinking this when it was first announced Ukraine would be getting the cluster munitions. But just to have thorough science...everyone grab your favorite artillery piece (HIMARS, M777, Self Propelled Howitzers, etc.) and try with cluster munitions again. Also if guns worked so well can we try with aircraft Ukraine is more likely to get their hands on? Like a Bronco or Pucara?
An A10 cannot effectively destroy a minefield. The cannon isn't effective enough to bother using and any bombs used would do almost nothing. Why you may ask? Because they use the wrong explosives. MCLIC line charges use C4 as the primary explosive. C4 unlike the explosives used in most munitions is called a fast explosive. It rips things apart instead of pushing them apart. This means it's detonation rips apart the internal mechanisms of the mines detonating them. Mk80 series bombs or any other weapon uses slow explosives which are perfect for making and throwing sharpnel or for deforming copper for HEAT projectiles. They do not have the ability to destroy the internal mechanisms of the landmines since they do not explode fast enough. Anyone trying to say that cluster bombs could be used for mine clearing have absolutely no idea why the MCLIC uses C4 and not a derivative of TNT.
The Russians were using their version of that system in urban warfare in some of the towns they hit early on. They'd send the rocket into a building and use the trailing charge to clear an avenue of attack. Not a great system for it.
@@TheCaptainbeefylog If I remember correctly, US Marines used MICLICs to clear a few streets from insurgents in Fallujah in ‘04 and those seem to have worked for them pretty well.
“Obviously hidden in real life…”. Not really. Normally the purpose of the minefield isn’t to cause damage, but is actually to convince the enemy to go somewhere that you have prepared to kill them. Hiding the mines actually works against you.
This is a great video cap, the Finding Nemo reference made me chuckle Here's an interesting scenario, not sure if it's been done, but could a squadron of the RAF's F4s have defended the Falklands in 1982?
At one point the Russians did create a 4 engine plane with design to have sonic boom wave be the weapon to destroy buildings etc but the engine tech just wasn’t there.
A lot of fun. Try a few other things - making the minefield broader and deeper, try using JDAMs or JSOWs dropped from a strategic bomber(s), try "burying" the mines. On the latter point, I wonder if the mines being on the surface of the road make them more vulnerable to certain munitions.
I think the mines have fairly large hit boxes. Which is why the 30 mm obliterated them. When real anti tank mines probably would need a fairly direct hit. Regardless it was interesting watching the cone of fire from aircraft at different altitudes
I bet the overpressure from an air burst fuel air device would get 100 percent of the mines in the affected area with little need for accuracy, and less tendency to dig holes in the ground
Tank group calls in CAS: "We need ground fire to clear a mine field to be able to pass" Grim Reapers are sortied: "Minefield can't exist if there is no road left" Tank Group: "I mean he has a point...." LMAO. I love the stupid stuff. Great work as always!
Has anyone made models for the smart mines currently in use (German AD2 on the Ukrainian side and PTKM-1R on the Russian side)? Those only have to be within 50 meters of the road in order to target a vehicle on the road.
They use flying explosives to make lanes. I think there 200 300 meters long 5 to 8 meters wide. I think they been doing it for decades, I don't remember if that's what they where using in desert storm, I was on ship. It's a rocket with a line of explosives connected.. Maybe it was more a 100 to 150 meters, I'm old and that was a long life ago.. 👍👍👍
Without watching the video, I can tell you: nope. It's why armored mine clearing vehicles have detcord that is launched, and mine plows designed to have adjustable and adaptable heights intended to overturn mines (which basically renders them useless since they are shaped/directed charges). An A10 will not be successful in clearing a path. Moreover, they are not designed to fly in contested airspace...
If the airspace is permissive enough for an A-10 (which Ukraine's certainly isn't), it would also be permissive enough for an AC-130 - and those have far more surgical accuracy, loitering time and much greater firepower available. If the Ukrainians could do this, they would have already done it with the SU-25, which at least has the proverbial saving grace of better thrust. And if they want to use cluster munitions, they might as well just use artillery cluster munitions.
Tbh it's a waste of a sortie for fixed wing aircraft. Not worth the flight hours or the risk. For rotory wing though it would make a lot more sense. The real problem is that there isn't a map that shows where the mines are or how many of them there are and you can't just shoot every inch of road.
Eh, BLU-82 from a C-130. Mines cleared. Put DSU-33s on the MK-82s and the percussion would set the mines off without wrecking the road too much. Probably set your interval too close for the CBU-87s to work well. The good thing about rockets is the WH size is great, but the A-10 takes 1175 rounds and can lay down a lot more faster and with HE rounds the percussion will work great. Again, one BLU-82 from a C-130. Use the right tool for the job.
OK, now put some S-300, S400, Tor, Tunguska, Osa in the area and few squads of russians with MANPADS in the nearby treeline and lets see how the whole great idea goes. :) *Slava Ukraini!
Renaming my A-10 to the Princess Diana-10. She would have loved these aircraft clearing mines. Probably would have had her Wills and that minge(Harry) flying one
That's what the Ukrainians need next , the A-10. When the get the F-16 first. For air cover. All them explosive and the gun . would be great on the fields as well. Good try out. 👍😊
That was almost as much carnage - and fun - as your bit with B1s dropping loooong sticks on Russian armored convoy from a similar altitude. Can you imagine sitting in the forward tank watching all these GAU-8 rounds coming in low from behind you ... and devastating the road in front of you. We never see segments showing thousands of these exploding 30mm rounds hitting a hard road surface. That was great. Can you try this again clearing a path in a minefield? How about put them in an S300s and manpad environment ..based at a distance. Let's assume these minefields fields are still pretty far from the Russian lines of defense, so I suspect a low approach would work, no?
Wouldn't bet on it in real life... First of all, some mines have detonators that don't react to explosives and the pressure they make. Meaning, unless hit directly, they will not go off. Secondly, throwing a bunch of explosives on the path of your tanks will make a lot of craters for the vehicles to cross over. Not to mention that remote mining equipment will throw mines there again anyway and there is also the danger of friendly unexploded ordnance... Finally, enemy air force and air defense might cause losses to planes bombing the minefields... So, yeah... Interesting video and idea, but I doubt it would work. Otherwise, someone would try it by now...
What...no airborne version of the MCLC? I could kind of see a version of that. A flight of Air Wardens with a parachute retarded line of McLick on a reel and a delayed impact fuse.
Personally I'd be in favour of using an IFV with a 30mm cannon at the head of the column to blast a way through. The MBT doesn't have to sit around stationary and therefore more vulnerable whilst it awaits the arrival of the A-10.

try to bomb each other with A-10s. no other weapons
That’s a lot of videos lol! I’m sure the important ones can be “modernized” and redone to bring them up to date.
Comprehensive or what ? 👍🏻
I learned from my dad that any ship can be a minesweeper once. :)
If brave enough even you could be a minesweeper
my condolences
@@sebi-t6i I think that was a joke that was spreading around in the military. Probably because I had an uncle that was in the navy.
All forces, everywhere have the same “nuances’
If you build the hull for purpose? A ship can potentially sweep three or more mines at a time.
Before having to go home for rebuilding entirely
Also unrealistic because no A-10s destroyed any friendlies…
Ooo- controversial ? 🤣🤣
Let me guess… you watch LazerPig?
I imagine that road would be difficult to traverse after that treatment.
Loving the A-10 series
big same
Given the dud rate on those cluster munitions, not only are they harder to use they're making the problem worse!
Unless a tank can shrug off the blast from a sub-munition, in which case it's viable if you only put tanks down the road. (More likely it would at least destroy a track, even if it's fixable it's a problem).
Biden says less than 10% dud rate….I’m sure we all believe that 😂
@@dexlab7539They actually say less than a 2.5% dud rate. But yeah you just exchanged AT mines for AP mines.
Fun place to go check the road for mines, after all those clusters... XD
If you want to clear a path use the 30mm cannon, If you want to clear a minefield use the CBUs
With the clusterbombs you kind of create a new minefield for infantry^^
With 500 lb bombs you destroy your road,
so we need more Gau 8's on the battlefield^^
I’d be interested to know the failure rate of the GAU’s 30mm ammo but that’s just me being a skeptic lol. More A10s for the memes!!!
Detonating those mines would destroy the road.
Or helos. A good hind pilot could probably clear that field by themselves.
"so we need more Gau 8's on the battlefield^^"
What about those air-burst bombs? They might have enough over pressure to set off the mines, MAYBE? What you all think?
Did you post the net cost of clearing that road? I would imagine the ammo for the A-10’s cannon would be a bargain compared to all the other methods.
I did. 20 minutes of flight for four aircraft? About $29K sans ammo. Of course, those aircraft would have to be loitering for who-knows-how-long just to be prepared for that and I didnt calculate expendables. An APOBS is $11K.
@@justinpowell1139 How to turn a minefield into a UXO cleanup site contaminated with depleted uranium.
Nothing beats a demining rope charge in cost.
Otherwise you could demine with rockeyes, of course, they would likely require demining themselves :)
AT mines are not usually hidden very well, but it's enough for tank crew to miss and trigger them due to limited visibility and high speed.
What would this look like in contested airspace? Perhaps F16 escort and A10 mine clearing?
F-22s off in the distance as well possibly. US military always goes into hot zones with a clear numerical/technological advantage.
EA-18 first plus F-15X up top too
“We cleared the mines!”
Tank commander staring at the cratered Moonscape in front of him: “…thanks?”
lol
The trenches tend to zigzag. A-10 strafes in a straight line. Apache is a better option for guns. HE rockets are even better for either platform against trenches.
For clearing minefields, you need precise fire and good IR sensors can be useful at certain times of day. Again, Apache over A-10.
Maybe some line charges mounted to aircraft hard points would be effective at clearing mines. Probably have to hover while firing which would make Apache a good option. 2 to 4 line charges could probably be carried. They could be slightly angled outwards to create a cleared wedge.
Alternatively, line charges fired straight forward in succession end to end by an aircraft could clear a deeper path in a short period of time.
@@stupidburp Or a regular ground-deployed MICLIC which is the US military’s preferred way to quickly clear a 100 m by 8 m path through a minefield.
@@Maverick0451Man, I wish I could witness the use of the MICLIC in real life. Although… I really like my hearing 😆
The fields must be a mess if he best option is to obliterate the road 😂
A mine-clearing line charge would be much more effective and low cost.
So that’s the road knackered then - so the Challies go cross country and run into more mines (getting shelled by Ivan arty all the while).
Hmm…
Pity the A-10 doesn't have a Fuel Air Munition available. The blast wave from a FAM would detonate the mines with minimal damage to the road
I thought the mine clearing aircraft you'd go crash land your planes 😂 do one with belly land and another one a 90° dive
Russian commander: We killed three AIRCRAFT with antitank mines?
4:20 _"Look at that, no crashes, guys."_
My first thought? You're not in the air yet, Cap.
lol
For the gun it looks like it would need a few degrees of automatic gimbal to accurately track the road. It feels like there's a gap in the market for tiny mine clearing drones with thermal cameras and little bit of RDX, used after sunset. The micro drones could be dispersed from a slow helicopter or cruise missile type thing with its own thermal camera.
Patent that and you just might win a government contract!
@@EWElife0313 Maybe this sort of thing is one reason why China banned gallium/germanium exports (it's used for thermal cameras)
Anything can be a mine sweeper at least once
US would use an assault breacher vehicle. A plow and breaching charges just sounds like fun.
Great video! Please do more Ukraine videos!
Yea, more Ukraine videos please. There’s lots happening there right now and it would be great to do a bunch of missions there. Whether it’s the S-400 destruction, Kerch bridge destruction or anything else, please please please more Crimea and Ukraine action.

Doubt that, it will be effective.
Explosives are hard to detonate with external stuff (by design). I don't know about disabling the fuse
I wonder about using something Ukraine does have....Mig29 or SU-25?
Yeh I just wanted an excuse to use the A10 gun TBH...
They would probably deploy the AVLM MICLIC (armored vehicle launched, mine clearing line charge) on this. Absolutely devastating for a minefield.
True. I think it would be perfect for this scenario. And maybe the road would be in a better condition than after an A-10 airstrike.
Ukrainians did this too in urban setting...
the rat patrol was the name of that show i believe sir
“Obviously hidden in real life…”. Not really. Normally the purpose of the minefield isn’t to cause damage, but is actually to convince the enemy to go somewhere that you have prepared to kill them. Hiding the mines actually works against you.
The 1960’s TV show Poosh mentioned was ‘Desert Rats’ I believe.
thx
This is a great video cap, the Finding Nemo reference made me chuckle
Here's an interesting scenario, not sure if it's been done, but could a squadron of the RAF's F4s have defended the Falklands in 1982?
Good idea.
I wonder if the sonic boom of an aircraft flying at like 100 ft could set of the mines? Great videos!!
A10 isn't supersonic. They are 400 mph max speed.
@@castlekingside76 I didn't say the A10, just an aircraft.
That's an interesting thought. It might even work. 🤔
Wouldnt 30mm practice ammo work aswell? Would be the cheapest and most sustainable plus least dangerous method.
the answer is: only in videogames....real life? definitely NOT!
Tank group calls in CAS: "We need ground fire to clear a mine field to be able to pass"
Grim Reapers are sortied: "Minefield can't exist if there is no road left"
Tank Group: "I mean he has a point...."
LMAO. I love the stupid stuff. Great work as always!
GR logic??
@@grimreapers May be flawed logic Cap, but a form of it nonetheless! Lmao.
Thought I heard an A-10 sonic boom……..oh wait 💥 LOL
I can imagine that traveling down a road that has been hit with 500 pound bombs would be a bitch even in a tank.
Cbu’s imo would be tooo light
as an achitecture student i want to know how are those cable poles were made of
Russian steel LOL
cluster bombs would be for a real minefield, for one done on a road, I think the gun or other bombs would be better
and the Mk-19 works extremely well at mine clearence. Clarance
could you do the same mission using the ov-10 Bronco?
Request for: which SAM system is most effective when I wish to complain to my chef in his private jet.
Topical.
Just add small "gift" to luggage, job done 😂
''tanks cant go around cuzz of mud'' turns the road into a casm, great succes
Warthogs would be Easy and slow prey for any kind of SAM or Jet
Has anyone made models for the smart mines currently in use (German AD2 on the Ukrainian side and PTKM-1R on the Russian side)? Those only have to be within 50 meters of the road in order to target a vehicle on the road.
17:04 That show was called "Rat Patrol" IIRC.
thx
Road is pretty simple, a field would be interesting
They use flying explosives to make lanes. I think there 200 300 meters long 5 to 8 meters wide. I think they been doing it for decades, I don't remember if that's what they where using in desert storm, I was on ship. It's a rocket with a line of explosives connected.. Maybe it was more a 100 to 150 meters, I'm old and that was a long life ago.. 👍👍👍
Yep that is the desert storm one! Very usefull equipment
All great points!
I have to admit I was expecting a few tanks to get hit. 😈
great training exercise, nice line first two times Cap.
More combined forces war games please...
Not sure saturation of fields with DPU rounds will be the best thing for farm land
Try A10 but belly landing, no landing gear
I know from experience that you can't detonate mines by shooting them. Don't ask......
thx
Gentlemen, let's plough the road!
-sir there are mines on the road!
-then erase the road
puts a new meaning to "Plow the Road"
Rat Patrol!!!! jeeps with 30 cals fighting the desert fox
thx
Cap King of the A-10
If the airspace is permissive enough for an A-10 (which Ukraine's certainly isn't), it would also be permissive enough for an AC-130 - and those have far more surgical accuracy, loitering time and much greater firepower available.
@@92HazelMochaYou can use cluster munitions, but even that won't help with certain fuses which rely on magnetic fields.
I think you can also put gun pods on the A-10 maybe get a bit larger spread.
You should have added three more mines you knob jockey
lol
Clear the road......... What road.....?????????/ Theres nothing left.... Should have dropped a Daisy Cutter for good measure...
*Slava Ukraini!
Can DCS simulate the Sun powered laser from "The World is Not Enough"? Might be more efficient than that A-10's
Fascinating concept haha...enjoying your stuff cheers
What...no airborne version of the MCLC? I could kind of see a version of that. A flight of Air Wardens with a parachute retarded line of McLick on a reel and a delayed impact fuse.
the deliberate "poking " of the mines using the aircraft was so stupid it caused me to laugh.
well done in keeping it "fun".
Personally I'd be in favour of using an IFV with a 30mm cannon at the head of the column to blast a way through. The MBT doesn't have to sit around stationary and therefore more vulnerable whilst it awaits the arrival of the A-10.
During WWII, my grandfather was a gunner on a Royal Navy Bangor class minesweeper. This method looks more fun on land hehe
I would HATE to be a friendly that has to call in an A10 though, might be better off just driving into the mines honestly
Could the shock wave of a hypersonic aircraft produce enough energy to explode the munitions?
I think you just want to blow stuff up 😆
Oh no! They're on to me!
Nice - now could a Thud or Phantom fly LOW (10 ft) in burner and detonate the mines?
They don't dig mines into tarmac dude, they're just sat on top of the road as per your initial simulation. That's also how Russian soldiers drive 👌
13:55 probably to much spread?
yes
Clearing the mines with the GAU-8 . . .
I think the driver of the lead tank might have pooped a little bit.
How about same scenario, but with Apaches using rockets and mostly guns?
Would I be correct in saying that sappers use fuel-air explosives to clear minefields?
According to the top right tax payer invoice an anti-tank mine costs $1M. That can't be right.
Wow! Ok….that was bad ass! I love A-10s!
Oh I remember the "rat patrol" show !
