Big Valley is one of my all time favorites... Heath being my favorite Lee Majors is the best. My favorite was Lost Treasure when he almost gives up the place in the family. Thanks so much for everything. By the way I loved the Nick and Heath dynamic too... Barbara

When I was a kid in the 60s we watched this on Monday night at 9:00. As soon as it was over I had to go to bed. I am 72 years old now and I'm watching all of the episodes again. As soon as the episode is over I can still hear my mother yelling at me telling me it's time to hit the bed😂

I was born in 1964 and feel like I was the last generation to really love Westerns. Big Valley was my favorite, followed by Maverick and Wild Wild West, these all played in reruns in the 70s all the time. Heath was my favorite TV Cowboy. I would have been a life long Lee Mayors fan just for Big Valley, but when he became Steve Austin in 1973 I went crazy! Lee Mayors was childhood hero. Until my 13th Birthday on May 25 1977 when Harrison Ford took over and the space Cowboy was born.

I'm surprised you didn't touch more on Victoria. Most females in TV Westerns at the time were usually portrayed as one off love interest(Bonanza) or waiting love interest(Gunsmoke). Victoria can shoot and fight with the best of them.

I agree, Victoria Barkley is amazing. Unfortunately, with Spotlights, there is so much to cover that I can't spend too much time on a single topic.
I'm planning a Top Ten list of female characters from television and Victoria will be featured there, so stay tuned after the holidays.

Great job! I love this show. I have all four seasons on DVD and rewatch them regularly, and I think you really nailed all the characters here. I love all the Barkleys and the actors who portraits them, but Jarrod is my favorite because I love his maturity and sophistication coupled with his big heart and caring nature --and of course his passion for justice. I also love Richard Long in just about everything he did on his 28 year career. I too love The Great Safe Robbery; it's a true comic gem (even though Jarrod isn't in it--Richard got to show his comic chops in The Battle of Mineral Springs) I love the episodes that showcase Jarrod's combined strength and vulnerability: Time After Midnight and The Man from Nowhere

I'm just wrapping up watching The Big Valley for the first time, on TH-cam.
Its a terrific show with great characters and great guest stars. Bruce Dern, James Whitmore, Strother Martin and Richard Anderson (Lee Majors' co-star on Six million dollar man) all made multiple appearances.
My favourite Barkley was Audra, without a doubt the prettiest lady in any western TV show or movie.

Just as you were named after Linda Evans, my son was named after Richard Long. I met him as a child of 8 years old, and he was very kind to me. At that age I really wasn't fully aware of who he was. To me he was the first person who was truly kind to me, and I decided to name my first born son after him. But...I my brother's name was Richard and I didn't want to use his name. When I was a teenager and The Big Valley was shown in syndication, I watched an episode "Under a Dark Star" The only episode where Jarrod"s full name was used. When my son was born, I kept my promise and named him Jarrod Thomas, after Richard's Character Jarrod Thomas Barkley

While appearing in The Big Valley, Briles received a draft notice in 1965[ , and had to leave the show. He served in the California Army National Guard until 1972. His character on The Big Valley was written out of the show, as Eugene Barkley went to study medicine in Berkeley

At 13 min you could have went about 4 more minutes and done more in depth on Barbara Stanwyck. She was a legend. Big Valley was competing as a new series in an over saturated western shows already. She brought cl ought and star power. If not for her, viewers wouldn't have gotten drawn into the excellent chemistry of the others. Anyway, still a good video. Thumbs up. I am a huge Big Valley fan and wish it had of lasted longer than Bonanza with was a sub par western series and Big Valley was way better.

Richard Long was an lead actor in the 1959-1960 PI drama Bourbon St. Beat. The late 50's early 60's had a number of shows styled after PI Firms such as Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye, 77 Sunset strip, The Roaring 20's and while just as compelling but not a series as the ones mentioned above was The Alfred Hitchcock Hour...." Good Evening ". Two others i'd like to mention were crossovers that combined detective and the western Yancy Derringer and of course The Wild, Wild West . One episode of Bourbon St. Beat had a plot line styled after Edger Allen Poe's ' The Gold Bug '. A look back at this genre would be interesting and there is a who's who of Hollywood talent that either stared in or made appearances. Aloha

Keep in mind Barbara Stanwyck wanted Heath to be Victoria’s illegitimate son not her husbands. That influences some of her performance.
