- The Poetry Breaks series is a series of videos filmed in the late 1980s and early 1990s by creator Leita Luchetti, who co-produced the series with the WGBH New Television Workshops. Poetry Breaks features short videos of internationally renowned poets reading their work, reading the work of other poets, and discussing their takes on poetry in a variety of locations. The Academy of American Poets has partnered with Luchetti to present these videos once again.
I love his way of reading it out loud, cause I read it so differently... That's what I love about art and litterature
Yessssssss!
You have second grade grammar, so who cares what you think?
@@davidruzylo8617 well.... you do?
My favorite poem by Ginsberg
The music chosen to begin and end the “vid”
is beyond awful
What thoughts I have of you tonight, Walt Whitman, for I walked down the sidestreets under the trees with a headache self-conscious looking at the full moon. In my hungry fatigue, and shopping for images, I went into the neon fruit supermarket, dreaming of your enumera tions ! What peaches and what penumbras ! Whole families shopping at night ! Aisles full of husbands ! Wives in the avocados, babies in the tomatoes !-and you, Garcia Lorca, what were you doing down by the watermelons? I saw you, Walt Whitman, childless, lonely old grubber, poking among the meats in the refrigerator and eyeing the grocery boys. I heard you asking questions of each : Who killed the pork chops? What price bananas? Are you my Angel? I wandered in and out of the brilliant stacks of cans following you, and followed in my imagination by the store detective. We strode down the open corridors together in our solitary fancy tasting artichokes, possessing every frozen delicacy, and never passing the cashier. Where are we going, Walt Whitman? The doors close in an hour. Which way does your beard point tonight? {I touch your book and dream of our odyssey in the supermarket and feel absurd.) Will we walk all night through solitary streets? The trees add shade to shade, lights out in the houses, we'll both be lonely.
Will we stroll dreaming of the lost America of love past blue automobiles in driveways, home to our silent cottage? Ah, dear father, graybeard, lonely old courage-teacher, what America did you have when Charon quit poling his ferry and you got out on a smoking bank and stood watching the boat disappear on the black waters of Lethe?
It very nice to saw all that comments. From different countries from different every other factors but life get together us in a poet its interesting and wonderful
What price bananas ? From Honduras ? Is that correct ? At 1:29 - 1:31 .
He changed it a little from the printed version there.
@@havanaknights4808 the Honduras part is actually not in the original, and I find it actually takes away from the rhythm of the poem, especially when hearing it read aloud. It makes me wonder why he added it in there.
@@jasonkh3943 I find it funny that I bump into this when I just finished dating a chick from Honduras and I was kinda heartbroken . Idk if it’s the universe or what ! And now you mentioning is not even on the original script
Is BANANAS LOL by the way Passenger brought me here WICKED MENS REST
What a wonderful poem. It has such a naive tone, just showcasing playful and complete devotion to his literary idols, recognising the influence of Whitman on all subsequent American poetry but doing it in such a fraternal way that makes it so sweet. All paired with his amazing and light-hearted way of reading, emphasising every single word, rediscovering and savouring every single one of them.
trash
Beautiful comment. Agreed, It’s so unassuming and childlike all the way through until its sorrowful, lonely last lines
Allen G never stopped exploring never stopped caring never stopped being
Genius. This, I think, is a poetic creation greater even than HOWL: it belongs with the greatest meditative poetry of the English language.
Great poem that captures a California supermarket where the light is a little too bright. Also captures the loneliness of the poet, who imagines Walt Whitman nearby, although Ginsberg deals with that in a surprisingly funny way.
Since i found this poem, i have read it again and again and... 👍💟
My most most Favourite Poet!!!!!
I love his lighthearted way of reading this, as someone else commented, different that how it sounded in my own mind when I first read it, but how I always read it since.
If he w(as/ere) still alive he could tabulate the amount of kweer bait east of East River and the complete selection of massage and muscle relaxers across the universe!
He did a lot of namedropping in his poems, didn't he? Holy Kerouac! Holy Burroughs!! *rolls eyes*
Where are we going now, Allan? We'll both be lonely.
poem for a quarantine
His voice is so calming- amazing poem
THERE IS A YOU TUBE CLIP OUT THERE OF HIM READING IT ( PRO MIKE, IN A STUDIO ) TO STILL PHOTOS. .. WITH HEADPHONES,.. I'D LISTEN .. AND I'D LAUGH , LIKE A SMALL LOST CHILD~
Allen would love that

Fascinating to watch Ginsberg performing his poems. He gives it a quirky, lyrical quality which carries so much meaning.
Brilliant, he reads it in verse form, musical as his idol William Blake is intended to be read.
He was a member of NAMBLA ✌️
Lucien Carr stabbed the wrong guy.
I was so devastated to learn about NAMBLA. I look forward to basing my former idol’s ass in hell
He’s eyeing the grocery boys
It’s insane how beloved he is. He was a monster.
Post-modernist libtards love him!
"One day my spirit will rise from the grave and the world will know that I was right.”
I clicked on this because i thought it was Dennis Rader BTK
Kerouac and Burroughs are still better, but Ginsberg is legendary right behind them.
i found this poem from an english class and it literally changed my perspective on poetry
Hey can I ask something 😅
What does
'Solitary fancy tasting artichokes, possessing every frozen delicacy ' means
Please let me know if u can
Hope for an early reply
@@VVitch763 Maybe try reading the whole poem without trying to find specific meaning and imagining yourself in a late night grocery in your own neighborhood and how you would feel in each department. Maybe walk by and look at the artichokes and the frozen foods. That helps me sometimes. Sometimes I never get it but I have hope that maybe some later reading will bring clarity. This is my favorite poem by my favorite poet. Thanks for your question.
Yeah? How so? It is vague. And sloppy.
@@bobbyleglocks1992 I can't speak for Dylanpetway but for me, I'm not a scholar or a critic. I just read them and this poem and others in this vein speak to me. They tell a story. I don't care about the technical aspects. Vague? Sloppy? Who cares?
Allen Ginsberg is such an advocate for free speech, he joined NAMBLA to defend it!
i was devastated to learn this, I used to love Ginsberg. Lucien Carr stabbed the wrong guy
You can still enjoy this piece of art regardless of his wrongdoings.
I doubt he was serious about nambla
@@supremelymontgomeryclift3453 You don't know mate you weren't there you can't assume all we can do is speculate
I don’t get poetry. I don’t understand why people are so moved by it.
that's sad
Maybe you haven't found the poet or poem for you yet? I hope you do someday. If not, then i hope you find joy in many other parts jewels that life has to offer.
Oh it's over? This is nothing. Who is this for?
Is the "whole families" bit a nod to Kerouac, or did Ginsberg start it first?
YESSS 👏👏👏 🖤
Great poem.
This is horrendous as expected.

This poem triggers emotion.
kinda romantic and lyrical. Ginsberg wasn't an angel but his poetry speaks volumes of the Beat Gen. everybody focuses on his extracurricular activities. he was a poet. we are not perfect or immortal.
this reading is so cute
OG Slam poet
Genius
Damon V what do you mean?
Search ginsberg, NAMBLA & ILGA and i urge researching ginsberg childhood 8 onwards really
@o o are you joking? there is a difference between "state your sources" and just refusing what has publicly happened. Ginsberg himself publically supported NAMBLA, NAMBLA`s own website talk about this and Ginsberg definately also spoke in public interviws about his support through his "liberal activism". on top of this have you not read any of the books or tales out of Ginsbergs younger years travelling the likes of africa with both of them writing about drug taking and on multiple occasions sleeping (sometimes after severly drugging the minor) with minors by the west standards (sub 16). the links are his literal published works you absolute plonker. He himself also faught later in life to relieve his name of these by essentially stating it was all in line with his activism which it was, but a man who spends his whole life being forcelly progressive is bound to progress in the wrong direction at some point. (i like gindberg but dont let your love for a mans art cover who he was, the 2 are seperate).
ALLEN GINSBERG is my main inspiration for writing poetry
I am born and raised in So CA, actually 5th generation California -- our family coming in 1849 in search of gold. I was puzzled why he chose California for his backdrop when we have room to breathe here, yet he is reading from his Manhattan apartment, where it would seem there are more people per square block than per square mile here in So CA. Perhaps he is just another Manhattan devotee like Woody Allen and recognize the city as their only true (and lonely) home.
Where was this shot?
in his manhattan apartment
Absolute genius.
I wish he was alive to tell us his thoughts on trump and our society today

Allan was a great piet.
I love Ginsberg so much, he is my favorite poet ...
he loves children
Christ is the ONLY WAY to heavrn.
The Master of Poetry
I don't know him. But he said fame is a curse with no redeeming features. But then, he was a gay Jew on hallucinogenic drugs lol.
The Respected Lex what is wrong with you? Holy shit, this comment is wrong in so many ways
Also member of Nambla
Irritating, faux-playful intonation by an overrated poet.
"What Peaches... What Penumbras..." What sublime and brilliant simplicity... The rhythm of his words is like a dance!
😂. This is amateurish trash.
shite
Prosaic poetry, not literary, just another ego, among the first "politics of identity" media successes, can't look at his work without a cringe.
He was a better poet than the rest of the beatniks but he was also a member of NAMBLA
@@alexharvey6522 Thanks for the message, didn't realize that and didn't know what NAMBLA was. Now I do.
Decades ago I Used to live near Harvard Square in Cambridge Mass. One evening walking around there I noticed sign "Alan Ginsberg poetry reading" at a location just a few doors away. So, I found it in a small downstairs venue, about 40 people mostly young students standing or sitting, the reading had just ended. I noticed his partner Peter Orlovsky (his name if I remember correctly) running around chatting up the male students, want to come with us and get high, things like that. I'm not passing judgement, who cares, but seeing that stuck with me.
