I get that Breen was just making a point about Patrick and Melo getting the praise/heat for Knicks performance, but that’s where the similarity ends. There were behind the scenes issues with D'antoni that hurt the team and Melo's play. D'antoni took some of those same bad coaching moves to LA and sunk Gasol's career. By the time the Knicks got the coach they needed with Mike Woodson, Melo only had about two seasosn before injuries and surgery took his athleticism away. Also, Amar'e not being able to get healthy was the biggest problem. Back then the salary cap was about 65 million. When you have a 20 million a year player riding the bench, you're gonna struggle to put a consistently effective team on the floor.
Melo was a big time needle mover on the court. He just picked the wrong franchise to spend his best years in and his reputation took a hit as a result.

If Vuc decided to kick out to the corner, Jennings closes out, Melo rotates to the elbow shooter, and Noah must recognize the swing to top of the key immediately and rush to close out.
