This IS the exact copy of Wave Race 64 that Arin stole back in the day.
He took the cartridge and turned it into data, which he then transferred into his WiiU and asked Tron to run the program.
That's how it works in Kingdom Hearts, so you can trust me on this one.

I friggin loved this game growing up. We actually ended up buying it used and the green/yellow guy's character was named "Fatass" but my dad covered it up by saying his name was pronounced Fahtoss. Many hours were dumped into this game tryin to win all those tourneys as the foreign wave racer Fahtoss. Some of the levels got intense and creative though, great game.
By the way, I had this game as a kid and I always found the girl by far the best racer. Was it just me? Her acceleration was amazing.
Gonzalo Silva Absolutely. Best (or easiest) controls too! It just felt the most fun to play with that character.
Fat dude was by far the fastest, but his rampup, and wave handling was difficult.

Mariner was the best racer for me and more manageable to control if you tweak the control to tight. Mariner is the fat dude he’s the homie.

I just wanted to say kudos to you all for going back and playing a classic (some would say underrated) N64 game! Can't wait to see how many more parts are in this series!
Never played this game, but it reminds me a lot of Jet Moto 2. Loved the soundtrack on that game.

I can't believe I forgot about half of these stages. I only remember Marine Fortress, sunny Beach, and Twilight City, the latter being my favorite course, with my favorite music. I loved this game as a kid.

They play it on virtual console, you can see it because it's darker than its supposed to be. This happened to pretty much all games from N64 on VC and to this day I still wonder why Big N wasn't able to keep the brightness of the originals.

I remember this game very fondly. Wave Race 64, Duke Nukem 64, Super Mario 64 (Geez, I'm noticing a trend here) Yoshi Story, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing Donkey Kong 64, Mario Kart 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, and both Turok 1 and 3 I had as a kid. I can't remember if there was more or not, but I have to say, all of these games I had for the N64. Very upset Nintendo isn't releasing the Virtual Console for the Switch. Do you understand how absolutely happy I'd be to play these games as a kid on my Switch? **Sigh...**
I was born in 96, I remember my brother would put this on for me when I was really young for a distraction while he played Resident Evil next to me. I had to have been 2 years old when that all started. I played Wave Race even 6 years after that because it never gets old.

Marine Fortress and Twilight city both use dive stunts to access shortcuts!
There is, you can go underneath in a few spots. Each character has an alternate costume too.
The water effects, though obviously showing their age, still look mighty impressive even to this day.

15:58 I like how despite being in 2nd place he still doesn't have enough points to advance. This game is pretty unforgiving. It's like how old mario kart needed you to finish top 4 to advance even if you didn't need that to win.

Dan didn't mention that the boat ride at the tar pits in ATHF is a glass bottom boat, meaning all the riders see is pitch black, rendering the glass bottom pointless.
I also love that its such a perfect show for him to repeatedly reference, being from NJ and also airing during the peak of his ~green plant~ escapades.
This was my favorite game for the 64. Im so happy you guys are playing it.

this game is throwing me back to my childhood. I don't remember it entirely but it's tugging at my memory like I should know it better than I'm recalling right now.
Nostalgia... I'm really glad this was uploaded.
I remember this game, but mostly because as a kid it made me fucking CRY. It was so fucking hard, and the shame and the frustration that hit me from seeing the game over screen (somehow the narrator's polite "sorry, better luck next time/come back and try again" made it ten times worse) combined with the beautiful music and serene waves on the title screen really did a number on me emotionally. But I'm not even sure I cried at that specifically. What _really_ did it was "Follow that Dolphin!" D':
I went back to this game later in life and thought "oh, surely now that I'm an adult I should be able to beat this game". Turns out it's still hard as dicks. Now I can appreciate the design and the effort that went into making it, but back in the day it was hard to. I even sold my original copy (sadly) probably for that exact reason.
I hope they find the sarcastic announcer.

Man I loved this game as a kid, too. I always used Amy as well, since she was the coolest to me. I even unlocked Expert mode as a kid but I don't believe I ever beat it. Those harder tracks get really rough.

I've played this game to death when I was a kid, it's really well done; the water physics were mind blowing in the day and they've put in so many little extra's (like the free ride mode where you could just fuck around on the island in the title screen and practice tricks and even unlock riding a dolphin). There was a UK game magazine that had a little competition for some time where readers could submit their best times; me and my dad dominated that page for a month until our times got crushed the next edition.
So much nostalgia watching this episode, especially taking that short cut at the ninth minute, my 8 yr old self thought he was a genius when he discovered it

Handling and grip is pretty straightforward hahah..
Grip is traction essentially, how you drag on the water, loosey goosey or locked down
Handling is bordernint from tight oversteer or loose oversteer, so either wide turns or narrower sharp turns
