This is mainly for myself but here's the Japanese media mentioned in the video:
Black Rain - directed by Imamura Shohei
Cherry Blossoms in the Sky - directed Obayashi Nobuhiko
Godzilla (1954) - directed by Honda Ishiro
Barefoot Gen - directed by Masaki Mori
I don't have my own recommendations or mentions to add, apologies. There's definitely something I could pull from my memory, but I'm really tired as of writing this.
    Thank you for the video!

The absolute least of my takeaways from Oppenheimer but something I think was really important was that it makes a very compelling case for the importance of the humanities in STEM, with the amount of times people handwave the human toll of what they're working on with the excuse of "we just build it," or the difference between theory and practice

I had the occasion watch the 1954 Godzilla movie a few months ago. It was probably a Big Joel video that prompted me to check it out.
I was honestly kinda floored at how emotionally heavy Godzilla was. It also reminded me that Japanese cinema has tackled those events in full earnest and in so many ways that it's kind of hard to justify a U.S.-made film trying to depict those events, at least directly. WWII itself is never truly off-limits, it seems, but certain voices matter with regard to certain events.

Also re:Nolan hate. Like I have my criticisms, hes often cheesy and heavy handed and sometimes a bit too indulgent, but I'd prefer a blank check to him once a year for a movie that any Disney slop. I consider him like Cameron in the way that I see one of his movies in the theater and im like "THIS is what a blockbuster should be".

I had a fantastic time watching this in theaters and watching your review was a real blast (ha ha) from the past to remind me what I loved about it! Personally I walked out of the theater feeling it was Nolan's best work, but it's hard to argue when you line up all of his works. I wouldn't say he's my favorite director, but without a doubt he's put out more than a few bangers.

I seriously think this is his best film despite some of the more cringy moments. I was utterly engaged the entire runtime and was genuinely mesmerized by the detonation sequence. Great film

I really thought this was a fantastic movie, one of Nolan's best for sure, like Emily says what a fantastic cast. Cillian and RDJ were highlights for me
I would say for me is top 3 of this year. My personal favorite is Spider Across the Spider-verse but right after that I 9lace Oppenheimer along with Past Lives
