Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children (soon to be 5) farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

Seeing your daughter learning to "take off " a lamb (as it's called in Devon) reminds me of me at her age; Dad felt sorry for the ewes as he had such huge hands, so he taught me quite young. Delighted to find a channel with real farming; mud, shit blood and swearing; I watch a lot of American "homesteaders". They mean well and are doing their best but they are so precious about it, and most of them are God botherers. I hope your husband appreciates what a good wife he's got; a neighbour of my parents used to say the perfect farmer's wife could take off a lamb with one hand while rolling him a fag with the other.
Glad you've found me ! We're just normal don't hide anything and like to show real life farming some like the swearing some don't but in my eyes, there are times we all do 🤣 we're not quite married yet weddings are a fortune and not had time to organise one 🤣🤣

Bit of Alamycin at the first sign of watery mouth has worked for us and thankfully have only lost the odd one to it good luck
We've lost the odd 1 but main of them have seen it through. Someone else said alamycin will try that thanks x

One ewe, at rear of the lot moved in after new bail in shed, has bad foot rot by looks of it. Can you treat that now before she goes out on the hill for months ?
Yes he's probably done it as thats why she looks sore. We're always at feet. But do them outside is best once lambed then the disease is outdoors

Whatever is Oliver on? He certainly needs to lay off whatever he’s drinking, even if its only sugary. I hope you’re both only playing up to the camera. Watery mouth best avoided with cleaned out and disinfected lambing pens between occupants. I used to spray the cleaned out pen with hyperoxide bed up with half a bucket of sawdust and straw. I was lucky to have a husband who got on with the chores while I got on with the lambing. Yes and after a hard days work, we still have to cook the dinner, one thing my husband considered woman’s work.. I actually enjoy being in the kitchen now that I’m well retired, its not about what you can’t do, but what you can still do when you’re in your 80s. I was holding my breath when you were on top of what could have been a toppling bale. You are one fit lass what with lambing in a crouch whilst lesser mortals kneel.

I've done everything I can to prevent it and keep it at bay like the vet said nothing we could of done more. It's okay Iam doing well with them so better outcome than most. And every relationship has arguments I think it's healthy 😄😄 let's out stress well 😂 I had to wobble it to get the net off 🤣 thanks for watching 👀

Do u treat for ticks before turn out finding alot on me own lamb's at week old?
Don't usually have an issue with ticks but they get marked, tailed and lug marked before going to fell. This land is easy access and will be going in a week or 2 to tail ect so see then. Bit ticks isn't an issue for us Really.
