Interesting tow test, from what I understand power is same as old model, which that and lite weight of Prado would make 3 t plus iffy. Single axle 3t caravan now thats scary, good job
@woznme100 maybe for serious "offroad" towing, but I would argue it's almost more important for dirt road travel. Significant tongue weight creates a fulcrum on the rear axle that over weights the rear axle and under weights the front axle, even if you use air bags to level it. Less weight on your front tires means less breaking force and less steering in an emergency stop. Additionally, for light offroad towing, this can be very dangerous when going downhill. So for true offroad towing, use a lighter trailer, but if you are going to tow a heavier trailer, distribute that downward force across both vehicle axles. This is also more important in short wheel base vehicles because it is much easier for trailer sway to cause significantly reduced control.

Hey, don't use the lane assist feature while you're towing anything. The dealer should've told you that before you started towing, and you can also find that info in your manual or online.
It may not void your warranty by taking out the seats but what about taking out the floor over the battery ? Also your state authority needs you to change it from a 7 seat to a 5 seat vehicle ? Does your insurance company need to know ? just sayin

Hi Lil, Hi Jake, Congratulations on the new Prado - comments on this video - first, do yourself a favour and get yourself a stone stomper ASAP - for the sake of your rear window. On the RPM at 90 kmh - the Prado is a four cylinder and has much less torque than the ranger hence why it wants to rev higher - you could try towing without using tow mode and see if it uses 7 or 8th when obviously the revs will drop and fuel consumption will improve, providing the engine can pull the weight in those gears
If you can provide a link to the Toyota Statement as mentioned at 18:41 that would be great. Because it is nowhere online after an advanced AI search. Thanks heaps.
Great car upgrade, cheap suggestion for rear suspension on car - air bag in the springs. We did this to our 300 to help lift the rear when towing. We put no more than 30psi in the air bags under row. Works a treat.
Recent new subscriber here! Getting the new prado myself ! Would like to know is it a good idea to have it rust proofed ? Ive heard it is just snake oil to get money fromt the dealer
Don't forget Do Not use 0w-20 oil it will kill it in Australia especially towing and in our heat, use 5w-30 or even 5w-40 as you are in hotter conditions and towing. You will see why if you watch just Autos Mechanical videos.
That's "if" you overload the vehicle and tow in soft sand attempting to take the vehicle beyond it's factory limits. Plenty towing around AU without issue.
If you don't want a wired air compressor, a milwaukee m12 or m18 is next best. Same battery and charger as battery tools and you don't need to carry extra hoses and leads. Air bags are a bandaid. Suspension upgrade or gvm is best. Enjoying your journey, cheers!
Tyres down to 18 psi, centre diff lock on, hold tc for 7 seconds in sand, it will go everywhere. Tc is amazing in rocky conditions, always leave it on in those conditions. Enjoy.
In coil aiir bags are the go. We run them on the 200. They are good as you can adjust them for load/ ball weight differences, although a 2" lift all round and a GVM upgrade would be a good thing. Another thing, do you have to tow in tow mode or can you tow in normal mode, that may let gears 7/8 engage.
@@lilandjake I did 2" lift first then had to upgrade rear springs, so make sure they upgrade rear springs with the lift, went with 300kg springs from memory. Also check your rear axle capacity. cheers
Gee these cars have come along way with technology the beeping stuff comfort and mabe fuel economy , but are they any better 4 wheel driving against the average 80series with say a 3inch lift , have things got better with 4 wheel driving or its just better because off the new fancier stuff 🤔 i would like to up grade but im scared I'd be going backwards in reliability , and have they improved the hand brake the prado is on a landcuiser chassis now im told so the hand brake would still be shit then 😢
Hey legend, I think it’s a bit of a compromise with any car, definitely an 80 series might be better in some situations, and the Prado in others, I think reliability in new cars is great for the first 5 years. I think an older car is great for someone who is mechanically minded, and able to keep up little maintenance jobs, horses for courses
@@lilandjakegee my car is 28 years old you saying a new car after 5 years could be a handful to work on doing it yourself 😢 gotta love the old Toyotas then , I think you just saved me 1 hundred thousand dollars then , thank you , yer i think I'll still stick with the old girl shes been good to me 😊 🍻
If you get airbag man air bags it will fix the problem without changing the springs . Ask harry he did the same on his Prado. And after doing that on my Fortuner it fixed the sag without compromising the ride
I read about the passenger applying the brake in a caravan magazine by some old bloke , l nearly choked , if the driver can't control the rig he shouldn't be driving.😅
Your transmission will be happiest in 6 th gear while towing. The extra air flow will keep things cooler. Fuel consumption will be a bit more but what the heck. You have 3 tonne on the hitch.
No relevant if it locks the converter, the ZF8 Speed has been around for 20 years and has never needed to be in anything but drive. Temps stay at 80c even when towing at 115kmh in 8th for thousands of kms. I know this isn't a ZF box, but it will be spec to be almost the same, full lock up is all that matters.
My original Prado did the same, the rear went down a lot. Did go with a 2" HD coil lift, was overall happy with it, but should have just gone with airbags in the rear, more versatile, more adjustment to get ride level perfect. This is one of the reasons I love my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, hook up my van start the car and presto perfectly level every time, full air suspension, love it.
Pretty much all the mid-sized 4WD's need a suspension upgrade to tow safely. Same with my MU-X 3500kg towing capacity but without a suspension upgrade was towing at a horrible angle.
It's slower than the old one. 😂 Good old Toyota, always doing the bare minimum. Once you fully load this thing and hang your van off the back, you're going to need a tune.
Jake when you get rid of those hwy tyres and drop some real ones on, your rpm will come down anyway. Unless you're like me and stay with the same speed reading haha
Not a fan of that spare tyre under the rear re clearance & the pain in the butt experience of swapping out a flat when out bush. That adjustable tow hitch needs an angle grinder as those lower end notches would never come in use. Two glaring facts - needs a 2inch lift+ heavier rated rear springs+ 17inch rims with decent tyre wall height. Perhaps a rear mount swing out spare tyre & swap in an extra fuel tank underneath would be logical unless these new Prado's are just being purchased as a general use runabout. I still can't understand why the twin turbo V6 was not an option as it is a no brainer in any mans language (Ford Everest damn got it right)

We are in Esperance too.
Will try the rock Sunday ❤
If you don't want a wired air compressor, a milwaukee m12 or m18 is next best. Same battery and charger as battery tools and you don't need to carry extra hoses and leads.
Air bags are a bandaid. Suspension upgrade or gvm is best. Enjoying your journey, cheers!
Unless you have a Discovery 4!
can confirm m18 air compressor is way better than the ones that atach to the battery
Love ya work guys ❤❤
Thank you so much Megan!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
Just get bigger springs in the back, Dobinsons a few hundred bucks, fixed my Prado van sag.
Yes that’s on the list!
@@lilandjake I did 2" lift first then had to upgrade rear springs, so make sure they upgrade rear springs with the lift, went with 300kg springs from memory. Also check your rear axle capacity. cheers
Good tip! We’ve been looking into airbags also, I’ll have a look! Thanks for watching!
Gee these cars have come along way with technology the beeping stuff
comfort and mabe fuel economy , but are they any better 4 wheel driving against the average 80series with say a 3inch lift , have things got better with 4 wheel driving or its just better because off the new fancier stuff 🤔 i would like to up grade but im scared I'd be going backwards in reliability , and have they improved the hand brake the prado is on a landcuiser chassis now im told so the hand brake would still be shit then 😢
Hey legend, I think it’s a bit of a compromise with any car, definitely an 80 series might be better in some situations, and the Prado in others, I think reliability in new cars is great for the first 5 years.
Isn’t it a good idea for the brake controller knob be placed where it’s accessible to the passenger?
Agree 100%, have mine on the centre console, in easy reach for both driver and passenger.
I read about the passenger applying the brake in a caravan magazine by some old bloke , l nearly choked , if the driver can't control the rig he shouldn't be driving.😅
@ not everyone is magnificent as you
Your transmission will be happiest in 6 th gear while towing. The extra air flow will keep things cooler. Fuel consumption will be a bit more but what the heck. You have 3 tonne on the hitch.
6th most likely is your 1:1 gear, 7 and 8 will be your non towing over drive gears, if you want to save your gear box do not tow in 7 and 8
Yea nice, I’ll keep that in mind. That’s probably why it won’t go into those overdrive gears. Thanks for watching!
And probably a new motor or rebuild in about 100-150thou kms just like a lot of hiluxs that have been loaded up 🤷♂️
Nice Toyota..!
Jake when you get rid of those hwy tyres and drop some real ones on, your rpm will come down anyway. Unless you're like me and stay with the same speed reading haha
$90k down, and here comes the touring equipment $$$... Bar work, suspension, winch, lights, protection film, UHF radio....
Content wise I could not care less is you don't drop into palms, nolans or gunshot but why not be the first to take the new 250 up the Tele. On ya!
Great episode
Mac and TJ
Sounds like a victor lawnmower 😅
GXL ?
Welcome to the 90kms hour club.
Hahaha, we’ve moved up from the 85, in the big leagues now
@lilandjake my hilux does 90 ks down hill and up hill.15 liters /100ks
worth checking out, if your after a rear bar for your prado." The Cruiser Company".
It’s giving me anxiety you not having car seat covers !!
Get a Thumper for 99 bucks. Airs two tyres up at a time in about a minute. If you break it buy another.. Cheap as chips.
Flip the hitch upside down and you’ll be good to go, no?
Is everyone on youtube trying to be an Adrian Portelli and raffling cars off to make a quick buck these days??
Put a bogged hat on it
Not a fan of that spare tyre under the rear re clearance & the pain in the butt experience of swapping out a flat when out bush.
I still can't understand why the twin turbo V6 was not an option as it is a no brainer in any mans language (Ford Everest damn got it right)
Bad choice 300 yeh
Pretty impressed with the new prado and more specifcally with its GCM, i like it.
Why do they give these cars a 3500kg towing capacity? The rear suspension is not suitable.
So many squeaky wheels in the comments. Epic car, we are impatiently waiting for ours to arrive. Have really enjoyed watching you guys, especially keen to see how you go with towing as ours will have the same job. Don’t let the keyboard warriors from the dark corners of the internet dim your light. ❤
should have kept the ranger
