  • I made a chicken tractor this spring. Haven't added the wheels yet, but I wanted to get this sequence up before it got too cold out. Hope this gives you some good ideas on how to build one. If you have any questions, please comment or message me.

    I made one just like this one without the box on the end. I use it for my ducks during the day and move them around the yard. I decided not to put any fencing on the bottom since they won't be in it over night. It helps to keep their main pen a little cleaner. Love it!!! It was very easy to make and the most expensive part was the fencing/netting to cover it. Thanks for a great idea!

    Very good idea. This reminds me of a similar model in Liberia, 40 years ago. To 10 pairs of rails, 50 Meter long, with each 1 Tractor who hat about 50 chickens, which can sense the earth and produced manure . Then the worker push the tractor firwart, loosened the soil and planted lettuce. After harvest they sold to the hotels. There were also sold eggs and chicken bits. At that time a good deal.

    Keep it stupid simple thats the key. Totaly functional, cheap, chicken friendly and fairly aesthetic as coops go. I am going to build this one, on wheels. Thanks

    I have ten 6x6 raised garden beds, so I am thinking about designing something similar to this that I can move from time to time to fertilize my garden beds. Basically, my design is a small quonset hut. I am thinking about using a more durable fabric, though, like outdoor shade fabric and making it stand taller for easier human access. Thanks for posting!!

    Pretty good. The decision to use wire on the bottom is about the only issue. I think it would help keep out bigger critters.

    Love this idea, I live in FL and have been looking for a chickens tractor to fit over raised beds so I could move it from one bed to another.

    I worked at a company making PVC conduit for 10 years. One problem you will have is the pipe will sunburn , become brittle and break. I would suggest keeping it in the shade as much as possible. Nick job.

  • @HotSauceJohnny
    @HotSauceJohnny  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @3333ramirez I think so. If you have it around, it can't hurt to give it a try. I used the PVC 1/2" electrical conduit because it costs less and seemed a little bit more flexible.

  • @HotSauceJohnny
    @HotSauceJohnny  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @spiritartman Thanks! I had all the wood and wire mesh laying around the barn, so that was already paid for. The pvc conduits were about $1.25 each, and the tarp was $5. I spent about $5 on hardware, and about $25 for wheels and axle bolts, which I still haven't put on. If you wanted to build one new, I'd say you could spend about $100, and about 6 hours of work. I'm in NY.

    @HotSauceJohnny Very innovative job. But on the wire bottom: I thought the chickens needed to scratch. I'm looking for a tractor plan, figure I could use heavier gauge wire and bend it outward in an "L," and make the ramp a drawbridge. That said, I love the ease of your use of pex-tubing and "Quonset Hut" coop.

    Very nice. First one I've seen with a hoop done this way. Can't agree with the wire floor. To easy to brake a chickens feet a legs. We keep dogs and they take care of predators. Easy scratching easy safe relocating, get a good dog and you and the chicks will be happy! Great build man.

    Thanks this is really helpful, although I don't think I would put wire on the bottom as I want a tractor for my chickens to dig over my veg patches on my allotment, but I guess this design can be done with or without wire borrow, it is very similar design to a poly tunnel (hoop house) for the garden. I think this is great:0)

    The wire on the bottom is always a problem when moving the structure
    with the birds in it. It's way better to add some wire by the outside attached to the botton edge of the coop and let it rest lose on the ground. Predators can never figure out how to dig in 'cause they always stand on the wire. It confuses them.

  • @Jefferdaughter
    @Jefferdaughter 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice portable chicken coop, aka drag pen or pasture pen. (A bit too large to fit between the rows of a garden so the chickens can weed and cultivate the soil like a 'chicken tractor', but nice design!)

  • @V0sify
    @V0sify 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @anAHDAMofYAH To solve that, I move the tractor right in the morning before I let them out of the coop from that night (I lock them up at night for further safety) I also wanted the larger mesh on the bottom so more grass pokes through, and it doesn't hinder them as much for scratching about.

  • @reneeamici4602
    @reneeamici4602 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wire on the bottom would be so foxes, rats etc don't get in underneath. I imagine it's light enough to lift one end to drag, so the chickens' feet don't get caught. Ours free range during part of the day, so our chicken tractor gets moved while they're out.

    I love the video, but as a not very handy dyi'er, I could use a list of what supplies you used. I agree with other comments that the commentary of why you might want something like this is superfulous, but a list of materials would help me a great deal as I am spending a lot of time looking at various projects, none of them "exactly" what I want, but yours is very close.

  • @HotSauceJohnny
    @HotSauceJohnny  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bzell99 Hi Brian. The dimensions are 10' x 5'. The pvc pipes are 10' electrical conduit. I think it is 1/2", will check it during the daylight hours.
    As for the fence on the bottom - a must where I live if you are going to let them stay in the tractor overnight. Otherwise, predators can dig under. I have not yet put the wheels on it, which will make it easier to move the tractor. So far, I have been pushing it slowly, and the chickens have figured out how to avoid the fence.

  • @stricklerville
    @stricklerville 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    would this be fine for a year around chicken coop or is this just for letting the chickens out into the garden to do their thing? I've never raised chickens before and thought that this would be great for a little back yard project with 3 chickens to start off with.

  • @Homebrew58

    But I thought the whole idea of the tractor concept was to allow the chickens to scratch in the ground?? That's why you make them small - light - movable to give them new ground to scratch in.
