[A's BMW vol.3] Making of wheel hub for BMW R100RS

A's BMW Rest Mod Project under construction, this time I made a wheel hub.The monolever BMW basically cannot be converted into a spoke wheel.Because it is a shaft drive and cantilever swing arm structure, the rear wheel is fixed in a special way.So, in order to shape the concept that I have been warming up for many years, I decided to cut it out of a lump of aluminum and make one-off.After careful design, I succeeded in producing it with only a general-purpose lathe, a general-purpose milling machine, and a drilling machine. It's the biggest of my carved products. The spokes are also assembled and completed. That is success.

I don’t think many people nowadays would believe you if you told them that was manually machined, not CNC’d! You’re an incredible machinist!

True old school engineering did this for 40years retired now but still love watching a true craftsman
This is something I would love to learn, but I don´t think I´d ever get close to that level of mastery without actually doing that for a living. Maybe someday I´ll have a CNC Mill and that´ll be good enough.
@@luisfrodriguez6641 I've put 37 years of my life into machining for a living and I can honestly say that the best CNC machinists all came up from manual machining, all the apprentices I have trained have to show high competence in manual machining before they get anywhere near a CNC machine. Engineering is a bout problem solving and the main thing we bang on about for machining a part with apprentices is sequence of operations, if they can't get that right then they make lots of scrap metal lol. I've worked in space research for the last 25 years and you have to be able to turn your hand to any machine to achieve the goal whether that be a Bridgeport milling machine, Colchester lathe or a Matsurra MX 520 5 axis CNC machine and many more.
boldee101 I agree that knowing how to use a manual mill will help a lot when using a CNC mill... but I guess a beginner is more likely to make a somewhat complex part on a CNC machine than on a manual mill.
I’ve actually had the opportunity of using CNC mills more than manual mills. During my undergrad studies I would need to wait a long time to use the manual mill while a HAAS VF2 was free most of the time. I’m no expert, but I believe I could make a lot more on the CNC than on the manual mill.
Also, when I said I would have a CNC mill I was referring to a smaller machine. A Tormach or a DIY machine, which work as high end hobby machines or low end production machines.
@@luisfrodriguez6641 Indeed, there are some very nice high-end hobby CNC machines now days. I'm not a HAAS fan in all honesty but they get the job done, we have a HAAS UMC 500 Plus and it's my least favourite machine lol.
CNC machining adds to the skill set particularly if you are also using high end CAD/CAM software, we work with ESA and NASA primarily the former and their demands for the entire process are very high as I'm sure you can imagine.
@@boldee101 Sounds like a lot of fun... maybe someday I'll get to work on such high precision projects :)
I've watch a lot of people custom build motorcycles but never at this level. Great job!
👍
When i saw the picture on the title section, i thought it had to he done on cnc. Extremely satisfying to see that it was done by hand👌🏾
Thank you!
Japanese people are very carefully and smart 🙏🏻
Japanese are really good at making precise things, there a Japanese needle maker who makes needles so precise, machines cant replicate his work www.wipo.int/ipadvantage/en/details.jsp?id=2597

Fountain pen nibs made in Japan are the best - especially the hand made ones!
Now I know why my custom made Kineo wheels with full machined hubs, rim and spacers cost so much money. It is a lot of work to do this, it takes tremendous skill, a machine shop and wheel building experience. Sir, this is what I call talent
....I´m an elderly guy from germany and still enthusiastic about the BMW cycles since decates.
But your work is awesome as well as these clips...please continue...
Absolutely insane craftsmanship! This is a work of art! Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you!
Wow. What a treat on every level. Stunning fabrication, brilliant lighting and exceptional music. Totally loved it. Congratulations!
I'm glad you praised the work and the video.
Exceptional music for my gay ears, thanks dawg.
can you re-upload your video de??

@@shiroh73 can I share this video on my channel
I've learned so much just from watching your videos. Would be very grateful if you keep uploading the process of making parts and building your custom bike. Watching your videos really motivates me to be a better craftsman. Thank you for your hardwork, Nakajima-san.
Absolutely amazing.... first I thought that’s made automatically by cnc , then watching a moment after my guess was totally wrong... You did an awesome artwork , and amazing engineering skill as well.. A big BOW 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️
I do think it is made by cnc for mass production. This is purely talent you can always count japanese people on for quality.
When I saw the end mill and computer at the beginning I 100% thought it was another CNC video.
The standard of workmanship is simply stunning.
i love how japanese craftmanship works.......the finese and love that goes into the process...results are outstanding.....ive worked for different nationalities...nothing beats the japanese.....KAMPAIII!!!
This is mesmerising to watch, the filmography, the editing and sound all work so perfectly with the amazing craftsmanship of the metalwork.
👏👏👏
I have so much respect for manual machinists, the true masters of metal.
All manual machined, this is something as an engineer i dont see much of anymore. True craftsmen my friend, well done.
Of course he turns his own hubs from a 15kg blank. Anyone who has a MHR Ducati fuel tank casually lying on the floor under a vacuum hose would have the skill level to do it. I would be happy to have 10% of these skills.
I am floored by the mastery of his tools, as well as his filmmaking and soundtrack work!
I've been listening to some playlist inn spotify named 46works. the soundtracks sounds the same so I assumed it's his. you can try if you like.

I am grinding, milling and drilling myself everyday, so I can share the dedication of this work. I can tell you are doing this job with your heart and the outcome proves me right.
Well done and keep the good work up!

4:21 feels like a scene from a movie. Nice camera skill
I'm watching your work again. The hub is perfect according to the old school. I respect every craftsman who knows what to do. You are my champion. I'm starting to service my motorcycle myself. Thank you. Greetings from Poland.
So good to see that there are still people out there with these old school skills. Beautiful job
I've watched this 2 or 3 times now, just for the pure artistry in the machining work & the editing of the video. Cheers Man
this is the way i learned it here in germany, i love to see this! well done.

It is so enjoyable watching your videos. An engineering masterpiece of craftmanship !

Nice work and good tunes! I honestly think we’re on the edge of advancing technology every year the machine shop seems to amaze me with the right mentality and work effort I feel like humanity could accomplish anything!😎
You just redefine the term "handmade" for me in case of motorcycle building. This is amazing and again a proof of reputation for Japanese style fine-art manufacture. This is astonishing
Very nice. Precision craftmanship. I really like your demonstration. Thanks
You can tell fine art in stuff like this. When you buy something like this, you have so much more appreciation knowing someone actually spent a small part of their life making it.
Espetáculo! Uma obra de arte, parabéns!!!
I certainly don’t have the skills to make a hub like this but I can enjoy the finished product.
This is beyond fantastic. 13 on a scale to 10. 😃👌
What exquisite craftsmanship!
Beautifully precise, meticulously engineered!
A visual joy to see such fine workmanship produce great outcomes.
Thank you for sharing your artistry.
Perfekt,
but i wouldn't trust the little rod on the brake shoe, there is a lot of power
greetings from germany
Thank you. This is the thickness commonly used on custom bikes.
I would have liked to see the caliper underslung so the torque arm is in tension rather than compression, but other than that a very impressive bit of work.
@@chrisstephens6673 correct 👍
@@chrisstephens6673 correct, but that rod used likes adjustable end tip. Best way used for pressure/compress, if used for tension the screw may leaked and pop out
i thought the same, it looks under spec for the task of keeping the brake caliper in place and holding the force of the braking all by itself
Mad machining skills. Great videography. Love the background music choices!
not expecting to see a lathe in the video goddamn that's peak craftmanship right there
WOOOWW... 👍👍👍
I am amazed because you did that without CNC.
Dude, doing that without CNC you need to calculate alot of thing and taking notes for alot of thing too. Meaning.. ALOT OF NUMBERS. And your measurement should be precise too.
It is complicated but YOU NAILED that..
Awesome.. 👍👍👍
Amazing.
Words can't describe how impressed I am. 👏🏻
Thank you Shiroh, your work has the three qualities most important qualities, design, materials and workmanship but also another quality, artistic and your work must give the owner a special relationship with their motorcycle! Your work and your videos also remind me of a line in the book 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance', where it quotes the opening line in a Japanese motorcycle repair manual, 'Before starting any repair, first get peaceful mind.', so true.
There is an equal skill level in attaching the rim to the hub with spokes. Do not underestimate the ability of someone doing this. Getting the rim concentric in the right plane with the spokes under the right tension is difficult. It takes a lot of practice . Nicely presented video showing traditional machine shop practices.
Mad skills mate! This was a fantastic video and I’m truly impressed by your fabrication talent. I’m glad I subbed. Cheers from 🇨🇦
