[A's BMW vol.3] Making of wheel hub for BMW R100RS

A's BMW Rest Mod Project under construction, this time I made a wheel hub.The monolever BMW basically cannot be converted into a spoke wheel.Because it is a shaft drive and cantilever swing arm structure, the rear wheel is fixed in a special way.So, in order to shape the concept that I have been warming up for many years, I decided to cut it out of a lump of aluminum and make one-off.After careful design, I succeeded in producing it with only a general-purpose lathe, a general-purpose milling machine, and a drilling machine.It's the biggest of my carved products.The spokes are also assembled and completed.That is success.

    Now I know why my custom made Kineo wheels with full machined hubs, rim and spacers cost so much money. It is a lot of work to do this, it takes tremendous skill, a machine shop and wheel building experience. Sir, this is what I call talent

      This is something I would love to learn, but I don´t think I´d ever get close to that level of mastery without actually doing that for a living. Maybe someday I´ll have a CNC Mill and that´ll be good enough.

      @@luisfrodriguez6641 I've put 37 years of my life into machining for a living and I can honestly say that the best CNC machinists all came up from manual machining, all the apprentices I have trained have to show high competence in manual machining before they get anywhere near a CNC machine. Engineering is a bout problem solving and the main thing we bang on about for machining a part with apprentices is sequence of operations, if they can't get that right then they make lots of scrap metal lol. I've worked in space research for the last 25 years and you have to be able to turn your hand to any machine to achieve the goal whether that be a Bridgeport milling machine, Colchester lathe or a Matsurra MX 520 5 axis CNC machine and many more.

    • @luisfrodriguez6641
      @luisfrodriguez6641 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      boldee101 I agree that knowing how to use a manual mill will help a lot when using a CNC mill... but I guess a beginner is more likely to make a somewhat complex part on a CNC machine than on a manual mill.
      I’ve actually had the opportunity of using CNC mills more than manual mills. During my undergrad studies I would need to wait a long time to use the manual mill while a HAAS VF2 was free most of the time. I’m no expert, but I believe I could make a lot more on the CNC than on the manual mill.
      Also, when I said I would have a CNC mill I was referring to a smaller machine. A Tormach or a DIY machine, which work as high end hobby machines or low end production machines.

    • @boldee101
      @boldee101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@luisfrodriguez6641 Indeed, there are some very nice high-end hobby CNC machines now days. I'm not a HAAS fan in all honesty but they get the job done, we have a HAAS UMC 500 Plus and it's my least favourite machine lol.
      CNC machining adds to the skill set particularly if you are also using high end CAD/CAM software, we work with ESA and NASA primarily the former and their demands for the entire process are very high as I'm sure you can imagine.

      i thought the same, it looks under spec for the task of keeping the brake caliper in place and holding the force of the braking all by itself

    There is an equal skill level in attaching the rim to the hub with spokes. Do not underestimate the ability of someone doing this. Getting the rim concentric in the right plane with the spokes under the right tension is difficult. It takes a lot of practice . Nicely presented video showing traditional machine shop practices.

    Respect! I own CNC machines, and although this is an easier task for a CNC machine - to do this right first time with a manual Mill and Lathe takes ALOT of time and patience, you did it first time and to perfection. Well done!!! A true artisan!
