READ BEFORE ADJUSTING!!!: Though I made many disclaimers in the video that you will come across if you watch, I did not mention lens coatings because I mostly only work on my sunglasses with standard european sun lenses from Luxx or Safilo. BUT, you must know that too hot of heat concentrated on the bridge area might ( and has caused, according to some comments) damage to anti glare and blue light coatings, to name a few. This was the furthest from my intentions and that's why I really wanted you all to take this with a grain of salt and use your own discernment and DEFINITELY take them somewhere if you are at all uncomfortable. Though I used to adjust glasses as part of my job, I still get nervous with my own frames at home, because a certain part of this will always be a little unpredictable. For lens coated glasses, I highly recommend going first and foremost, to an optician. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO DO SO and need an ADJUSTMENT TO THE TEMPLES fast, if you are ONLY adjusting TEMPLES that are ACETATE, I would suggest my warm/ hot water dish method, because you can wrap the lenses with a cloth and they won't be close to the temple. Basically the only safest option for a bridge adjustment with heat ( either a bead box or a warmer) , whether at home or at an optical shop, would be to remove the lenses before adjusting, but this is why I highly suggest a professional because changing the shape of the bridge causes issues with lenses popping back in sometimes.

It never entered my mind to heat up sunglasses with a hair dryer to make them tighter. I dropped down into the comments to see if I should be concerned about heating up the lenses too much. It sounds like I have exactly the kinds of lenses that I should be concerned about. So I popped out the lenses and used a hair dryer to shape my sunglasses to a tighter fit. It worked perfectly. Now I like my sunglasses again! It’s just about like getting a new pair. Thanks for making the video.

I did this a bunch of times, for a pair of RB Vagabond. The temples were kinda weird and it felt like the sunglasses kept sliding down. I bent the temples covering the lenses and finally got them adjusted to my face. I later tried to do this on a pair on RB 4195 Wayfarer Liteforce, but that material is a whole other level. Awesome video!

I just ran the bridge of my plastic framed glasses under the hot tap then adjusted my frames per the method that you demonstrated to open up the legs. Worked a treat :) Thanks so much for the video, no more pain from my glasses squeezing my head behind my ears. You are a life saver! Thanks.

Kristen, thank you very much for making this video! You've saved me time and money: I've just fixed my new Persol that kept sliding down my nose. It fits me perfectly now, and ll I needed was your advice, some cloth to wrap around the lenses and about two minutes!
I spent $500 on 2 pairs of prescription sunglasses and both ended up with the arms extended way out of shape. I have heat guns at my work and heat resist tape. I put some tape on the lenses, heated em up for less than a minute, bent them into shape and I couldn't be happier! Thank you, and thanks for the tip on protecting the lenses during the process.

This is why i love youtube. Bought the perfect pair of sunglasses only to have it be too tight. I did this and now i don't even want to take them off, perfect fit. $70 pair of crapeyewear fits better than a $150 pair of ray bans that i cant return anymore. Live and learn i guess. Why must life's mistakes be so expensive lol

Thanks for the tip. I have an odd problem where one ear is a tad lower then the other, so I need to make my shades intentionally uneven :) I'll try this as opposed to bending at the hinge as I've done in the past..which sometimes ends catastrophically!

Loved the video, the only one I could find without using hot water or a bead machine hot box. I like the guy below in the comments am looking to adjust the bridge on my Oakley holbrooks. They are way too tight on the temples and took it to a eyeland and they could only adjust the sides around the ears slightly. If I had a sunglass hut by me I would definitely had went there. I am going to try the heat on them carefully and hopefully it will help! :)

KLSunwear They had a hotbox type of machine they used for the sides and it helped a little bit but ghe problem is within the bridge. I need to stretch it out and they told me to wear them and after time it will stretch but I get tension headaches on my temples from them so that wont work. So far with your method the bridge is just slightly getting to where I need it. Still tight on the temples however. 😅
Oh, weird they didn't have the heat air thing, totally forgot what it's technically called, but the "hairdryer with the lid" so it traps heat. I thought most had those so I'm surprised! So you got them a little looser? And even after they adjusted the temples, they're still too tight? that's unlucky! hope you get them more comfortable

I have Rayban New Wayfarers that keep slipping off my nose, I was thinking of using a heat gun as you mentioned the plastic is thicker on the Raybans, would that damage them as the heat gun is more powerful than a hair dryer. Also do optical places use the same method to adjust sunglasses or do they have some kind of machine?
So sorry that I'm seeing this so late, and I'm sure you've found a better answer by now than waiting on me, lol. Sorry again, I'm filtering through one's I've missed. The RB new wayfarer is made of nylon, so I'm not sure if it heats the same way as acetate, and some of those colorways appear to have coatings, so I'm not sure I'd recommend the home version, just in case something happened, an optical could at least replace them. I don't think I've ever seen anyone adjust that model but I'm pretty sure it would move the same way, might just require a little more heat? But yes, opticals have a heater that blows a stream of air and the more outdated places have a hairdryer type machine that has an attachment where you sit the glasses and close a little lid where the heat can be concentrated. The only difference is they also have hot boxes full of little glass beads that are really hot that they can dip glasses in to adjust but I don't tend to care for those because if left slightly too long, they can create permanent dents in the materials. Woah that was an essay for you, haha, but overall, I'd say hairdryer on low-medium and feeling it out or warm water wouldn't be too risky.

CAUTION!!.. in the process of heating the bridge, I have also melted the coatings on my lenses, result was not pleasant... I have tried this method BEFORE watching your video, which means my falure has nothing to do with you, but to everyone who considering trying this method of adjustment, be warned.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I've been in a serious back and forth about taking this video down. Because as many disclaimers as I made, I didn't mention coatings because I was referring to basic european sun lenses from Luxx or Safilo :/ I so hate to see comments where there has been damage and thank you for letting me know. When i place them upside up they're even, but when i place them uspide down - they're not.. why is that happening ??? One arm is slightly higher than the other

Hi, those are made of nylon and getting the temperature right to adjust those is a bit tricky so I'd find a sunglass hut or optician for that one. My method above I feel confident in saying works for acetate safely but the other materials require someone who's done it more I feel. Good luck!

Hi there! :) I think with Oakleys ( which I believe, but may well be wrong, that the frames are injected material of some sort), I would take it to an optical place instead of trying those myself. I tried to do a search for you on exactly what they're made of, and couldn't find any info about the frames. In my opinion, they have more of a hollow feel to be so lightweight, so I'm not sure what the heating guidelines need to be to do that safely so I'd strongly recommend having someone at an optician or better yet sunglasshut, do it if you can find one of those nearby. I would be too afraid to do those myself if it were me, I'm sure it is adjustable, it would probably be more touchy if you overheated that material to not break them, I feel. I hope that helps!!

Hi! yes you can! I have a video doing that on some carfia sunglasses, I can share the link, but I have not tried that particular fix myself on metal, so I'm not sure and can't urge you to try that at home. Just got a new pair of Gucci eye glasses they are kinds metal and then switch back by the temple to somthing I think.... any advice before I fake it untill I make it ? Don't delete the video your super cute in it trying to explain and record. When we get married one day it'll be funny to watch ;)
Hi, I've got two pair of rb Justin's. One from Rayban and one from eBay (originals). The eBay ones are deformed on the temples, they got a curve as if the previous owner had a fat head. Can this method be used to remedy this problem. They fit great, people don't notice. Is just asthetics for me. Thanks in advance. Great videos
Hey there! I only 100% suggest this method if the frames are acetate, and Ray-Bans ( with a few exceptions) are nylon. The Justin is a matte nylon so I wouldn't try it at home ( if I were you). The nylons take heating differently and need a gentler method/ lower or more controlled heat, so I'd highly advise sunglasshut for that because their main brand they work on is RB. Failing that, optical place. Thank you, good luck.

would this work on Ray Ban New Wayfarers? The top of my right ear (the spot where my temple sits on my ear) hurts when wearing most glasses, what could I do to fixt that.
Emre Y hey! typically new wayfarers can also be adjusted with this method but its more of a nylon they use so it heats a little differently. The ear issue makes it a little harder and I don't think its something you'll be able to fix yourself-when you lay them down flat on a table do both temples lay even or is one raised up? if they're level I am betting one ear is slightly higher than the other its very common. You'd have to have an optician bend the actual temple at the hinge a certain way to take the pressure off your ear. If you want you can send a picture of the glasses laying flat, one from above and one from a side angle to klsunwear@Gmail.com. It would help to see them.

when you do the bridge, does that make the bridge bigger or just help the tightness on the temples?
it can kind of slightly help to make the temples wider apart if nothing else is working, or also make them narrower, but it just depends on what the original issue is

Hi! the only other thing I would suggest is hot water in a bowl and dipping the temples in but I wouldn't put the lenses in the bowl. So it depends on what part you need to adjust.

Thanks for the response. I want to lower the lenses slightly and in order to "open up" the nose pieces I will need to pull them apart (a bit wider than they are now). The noise pads are connected to a vertical metal piece which is attached (drilled) directly to the lenses. Im just wondering if I heat the metal if Im ok doing this with the nose piece attached directly to the lenses. Thanks so much for your time! :-) Oh, they are Nikon lenses and the frames are Silhouette.
Ah! For anything Silhouette, you're going to want to take those to an optical place and have them adjust them instead. I say that because the plastic vertical piece you're referring to is more fragile and/or Silhouette frames need really gentle, specific manipulations with tools that usually can only be found at an optometrist. Even if you tried, it wouldn't act like regular plastic. That's my best advice as I don't want anything to happen to them, best to be on the safe side! Sorry this method doesn't work for every case, but thanks for asking! Hope you get it sorted!
Silhouette's are durable and very nice and so many people swear by them but when I worked in optical I even had to ask my superiors who had been in the field a lot longer to adjust silhouette's because they can be tricky.

My glasses have plastic frames but with metal arms inside the ear rests. I'm guessing this technique won't work and I should go to a specialist?

Hi! No I haven't tried the hair dryer method on Persols, but from the looks of it, that model may be easier to maneuver with hot water. I'm planning to upload a video showing that method too, but there's a few other here on YT I think. I'd get it a little hotter than what the tap would do, I usually get mine until I can just dip my finger in but not leave it in if that makes sense. I bet 15-30 seconds doing that would probably work better for you than an on and off of a hair dryer trying to get them malleable might work better, but it's all down to you :)
Cool, thanks. I tried the water as hot as it came out of the tap, but didn’t try to bend very hard (was scared to break). Anyway, didn’t work. I may try hotter water, but a lady at sunglass hut who seemed very knowledgeable on Persols in particular, said they will eventually mold to fit my face. Have you known Persols to do this?

@@thedmv1110 because of the stem system they do have a tendency to mold better than others I think but from my experience it would take a while being out in the heat with them on for them to conform. Are they too tight or too loose? I can understand why you hesitate though.
They’re tight right at the temples, which is fine, but flare out a bit and don’t feel tight enough at and behind my ears. They slip down when I look down. Thanks for the quick replies, good vids.
@@thedmv1110 ah, yeah you might could try again with slightly hotter water where it's loose and bend them at kind of a diagonal inward if that makes sense, because the wire core naturally seems to go that way, if you wanted. I think the temple area tightness might sort itself out with the stem system like she said. No problem, thanks so much, means a lot to me.

It's some sort of co-injected material and I'm not sure of its properties and what it can and can't take so I would definitely not try anything at home and take them to an optical. And if they don't seem familiar with the brand, tell them what material it is and say something like " I know it's touchy", since apparently in the optical field, sometimes people don't know and try it like any other thing. All my sunglasses are loose ,i go wall mart for fixing but to day i felt they bothered so search for this video.
I have plastic frames that sits a little high on my bridge. Would this be fixable on my own or should I take them to an optician?
Persplagon you mean to where there's a noticeable gap above your bridge?
Yea there's a gap there because the nose pads are resting more on the side of my nose. I have a wider bridge. Because of that I think they sit a little high overall.
Persplagon I was going to say you could try unbending the temples a bit because sometimes that makes them sit too high if there is too much curve but without seeing them i can't properly advise you. I think that's gonna be one for the optometrist.

No, as far as acetate goes at least (because I have the most experience with that though other materials can be heated with caution) they can take quite a few adjustments. Just as long as you don't concentrate the heat on the lenses too much
@@KristenLB So when the lenses are warm, it should be fine? I let my glasses in the sun for a while. They werent hot, just warm. You think it would harm the UV filter, polarisation, anti glare etc? I hope not!
@@jimatmeijs269 depends on the brand, but usually higher end glasses , their lenses shouldn't be ruined by a few times left out in the car although it's not good to do. You should be fine :) repeated exposure isn't good though and try to keep them away from alcohols or alcohol based cleaners and they should last.

What part needs to be adjusted? the arms? I wouldn't try anything but the arms if it were me, and only if you can go online and verify it's cellulose acetate.

DO NOT do it this way for the current blue-blocking computer glasses. At least, not the way shown here. You will ruin the coating, as I found out, and they will be permanently hazy. You must remove the lenses prior to heating the frame. Watch some of the other videos, it's not very difficult to remove the lenses and get them back in.

KLSunwear Yea. Because of a little bump on the left side of my nose they don’t lay parallel to my face. They call it the vertex.
Barking Spider I have had some glasses do that by nature and I've heated the bridge and sort of slightly twisted as I did in the video but I would be very careful. I would probably go to sunglasshut or optical office for that. What brand and model?

Don't use a heat gun, use a hair dryer or hot water. I melted glasses with a heat gun. Oh yeah, and pop the lenses out first. I melted those too 😂
I'm scared of messing it up just bought my sunglasses and really don't want to have to throw them in the bin.
I always say, and said it in vid disclaimers, if you don't feel comfortable for any reason, just find any local optical store and they'll do it :) should be easier now that covid is letting up.

Hey, sorry I don't understand what you mean by the last part. With metal frames, they'll have to be manipulated with optical pliers, and you'll probably want to go to an optician for that because it's easier to mess up a solder joint with metal frames than it is to screw up acetate.
Thanks . I looking for my needle nose plyers . I bought a pair of Ryders at a second hand store for $2.00 An older pair a discontinued model. They are made of very strong steel . I got the nose pads fixed though . Thanks for your video .

Would not recommend this process with prescription glasses, the hair dryer will damage your lenses.
If you don't concentrate the heat, maybe so. But if you went to an optical where you could get them to use the actual equipment, I suppose it would be better. How else do you suggest doing it with RX'ed glasses? Doesn't the hot box submerge the lenses somewhat even more?
KLSunwear I haven't tried any other way 🤷♂️, but when I tried your method, it took less than 20 seconds before the Rx lenses started to have fractal fissures which blurred the lenses. I'm bringing them this weekend to my optometrist to see if they can be replaced, I believe they still have a warranty on the lenses. The acrylic frames were not damaged, which was a relief. I believe the optometrists' equipment had a nozzle attachment that would concentrate the heat on the bridge so the lens are not as exposed as much.
Oh no! I'm so sorry! When I worked in optical, ours was concentrated, but it was enclosed with a lid so it also got the lenses heated too, albeit not as much as the frame and never witnessed anything go wrong, so I never would knowingly misguide people. I'm terribly sorry for what happened and I'm glad you have a warranty on them and I hope they get it fixed up quickly. Thank you for commenting. I'll be aware of this going forward, although I've never heard of it, I'll be sure to mention it if I make an update to this video.
KLSunwear it's a lesson learned, not everyone is an expert and you did put out a disclaimer on your video. But yes, the lens got cloudy and at first I thought it was just moisture but after a closer look the lenses developed small crazings. I guess not all lenses are equal and can tolerate heat from a hair dryer. I looked into this more and it looks like this might be due to the antireflective coating that was applied on the lens.
