    Tortillas or pita bread plus, those refried bean pouches, minute rice, cold soaked jerky, a bit of taco seasoning soaking with the jerky for two hours, salsa
    Nachos
    Ramen bomb
    Mash bomb
    Have you tried the Punjabi eggplant mash or masala? (Add one of those packets over your couscous.)

      So many great options. I haven’t tied the eggplant. I don’t eat eggplant as it gives me ptsd. Eggplant gave me such a bad gallbladder attack I found myself in the hospital. I’ve had my gall bladder out now, but it still scares me to try it again.

    If my hiking partners are stovers, I like to mooch a tiny bit of hot water and add it to my rehydrated cold soak. Probably gets annoying to them so I keep it to a minimum

    • @RVAHikerGirl
      @RVAHikerGirl  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm a stover most of the time. But in the heat of the summer I don't like eating hot food when its really hot outside and sweating like crazy while eating. Not fun. But in the winter, a warm meal is so nice.

    Great ideas, thanks! I've been looking for some ideas besides the chicken/tuna packets and potatoes/mac & cheese because of the salt content. I don't mind cooking, but trying to clean a pot seems like too much work. And drinking pot gravy? Barrffff!!!! Although for some reason the idea of rinsing out the cold soak container and drinking that water doesn't bother me, LOL.

    • @RVAHikerGirl
      @RVAHikerGirl  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use freezer bags to put your food in and just add boiling water. They won't melt. That way you don't have to clean up your pot. I have tried other stasher bags and other things on the market and they stain, hold smells, and are sometimes more difficult to clean up than the pot. I do cold soaking in the hotter months. Couscous is among my favs to cold soak. Glad you liked the video. I have almost 200 vids on the channel so if you ever get bored, come on back. ~RVA~

      @@RVAHikerGirl I just watched this again, love the idea of oatmeal for lunch. I'm not a big breakfast person because if I eat first thing, I'm ravenously hungry again in about an hour. I'm going to get some of those Power Crunch bars and try those for a late breakfast, then the oatmeal at lunchtime. I eat oatmeal daily for "breakfast" anyway, but typically not until 10 to 10:30am. I've also found eating when I first get up causes some GI issues that I'd rather not deal with out in the woods. Your food is so organized!! I was a hot mess this past weekend on a kayak camping trip, I've got to have better food organization. Thanks again for all the great tips.

    What I like about cold soaking is not waiting for food. I start my lunch before i head out. I start soaking dinner at lunch time, and I start breakfast before I go to sleep. What’s more, if you do want a hot meal, I just use less water. You can bring a half cup of water to a boil in no time and add that to an already mostly hydrated meal. The water boils faster and you don’t have to wait for the food to cool down.

    Nice video. Definitely a different take on foods than I've seen online. I usually cold soak my oatmeal for breakfast the next morning (prepared the night before), my lunch is normally just a packaged protein with cheese, and my dinner is a dehydrated food that I prepare at home. I do find some of your foods interesting, especially the dehydrated hummus. That is something I will be looking into. It appears you prefer a gluten-free diet, whereas I am using keto as I am pre-diabetic. Low carbs and sugars. But, my daughter will appreciate this video. Can't wait to show her.

      Thanks for the watch! No, I don't do gluten free but I do try to do low fat due to gallbladder dysfunctional issues. I do try to find other protein sources outside of meat such as beans, bars, pouches, nuts, and seeds. Since this video, I am now eating vegan to cut out even more fat and I'm feeling great. I dabbled in keto previously. Whatever works for you do it! We are all different with different dietary needs. I get bored with the same hiking foods so I always try to change it up!

      Try cold soaking, it allows you to control what you are putting into your body to fuel yourself. The oatmeal was soooo good! And you can mix it up for so many types of flavors by adding nuts, other types of dried fruits and seeds. Did you mean tea? I love tea, but when backpacking I have issues sleeping, so I can't do caffeine after like 1 o'clock. Even decaf teas still have some caffeine believe it or not.

      Hey Brett thanks for the watch!! I don't usually do fires when I'm hiking really long miles - I'm just too tired and fires are hot in the summer Especially when I'm trying to cool down, so just wanted to try cooler food options this trip. If I'm camping at a campground I LOVE to cook over a fire & cast iron skillet or on trail in Fall & Winter. The oatmeal is amazing! Next time I will add even more banana chips! You should try it. It's really good at ambient outdoor temp. The refried beans were like a bean dip and so good too with the fritos.

    Interesting video. nice recipes.
    but i just want to give some informations on the additional nutritions you use for your meals.
    there is no evidence for the positive effects you mentioned of supplementive collagen (1) and glucosamid/glucoronic acid (2)
    you have too much vitamin c/ ascorbic acid on day 2. your body wont be able to absorb it (4)- you ll either pee it (or get diarrhea if you are sensitve)
    if all those packets of electrolytes are for one day: thats too much, you ll just pee it.
    and theres no (scientific) reason of taking "himalayan" salt btw. its just more expensive than normal salt. the fritos and the rest of the food youre consuming should have enough salt
    please excuse my english, i m german (and studying biochemistry). i just want to give some advice, but feel free to eat whatever you want.
    i hope i added enough scientific sources/studies
    kind regards/stay safe/happy trails

      Thanks for the info. I have been using vitamins and supplements for years. I take what has kept me healthy all these years on the planet, lol. Numerous doctors have told me to take Collagen and Glucosamine for my joints and I have done a lot of research myself outside of what they prescribe/advise. What studies stay isn't always factual for everyone since they have small control groups and everyone has different genes and preexisting conditions. I was premed in college myself. Anything our bodies have in excess gets excreted out in some way. We all get too much of something on a daily basis. So if I have too much vitamin C one day, thats ok with me, lol. What works for me may not work for someone else. I am not a nutritionist or physician. You eat and take what works best for you. I make these vids just to give ppl ideas of the types of foods they can take on the trail outside of the typical dehydrated meals. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate your opinion.
