MQB MK7 Cant put gas in gas tank : suction pump failure TSB

  • I encountered a bizarre problem where I could not add any gas into my gas tank. The fuel filler neck would fill up with gas but it would not go in to the gas tank. After a long debug session and some help from a fellow VW enthusiast I fixed the problem. Watch the video to find out more.

This video saved me so much money. I have a 2017 VW Golf Sportwagen. I was unable to fuel. I took it in and discovered that my charcoal cannister (part of the evap system) was saturated in fuel. I had it replaced ($1200 part) and went to refuel. Same issue. I sent this video to my mechanic and he discovered that I have this part inside my tank (date stamped Feb 2016 - from the recall date). I spoke with multiple VW dealership mechanics and asked if it is at all possible this part exists in my system as it is not listed on a single VW diagram or parts list. They insisted that no way does this part exist. Had I not discovered this video, I would have ended up replacing my entire tank.
Long story short, VW obviously knew what they were doing when they chose to not include this part on any manuals. It is actually a huge safety risk, outside of it costing so much money for people unable to diagnose it.
    Thank you for posting this!
TO clarify the Safety Recall Code for this issue is 20Y6 and only included vehicles from 2015/16. My vehicle has no recalls out for this issue.
I have been in touch with VW Canada regarding the issue, as well as Transport Canada.

I found this video on a Facebook group for Sportwagen’s. I’ve got a 2018 Sportwagen 4motion, and I’ve encountered this same issue. Seeing you posted this comment 5+ months ago, did your calls to VW Canada and Transport Canada manage to get a response??? FYI, I’m in Toronto.

Thank you so much for this info! My 2017 PP GTI started having heavy fuel smell outside vehicle after shut off. I checked charcoal canister & the vent was sweating. Next day car started cutting power while driving intermittently. Picked up the in your parts in this video & car literally started leaking fuel from the charcoal tank when I got home 😂😂. Took 2 hrs taking my time. $8 battery operated fluid pump from harbor freight sucked the tank down once pump was out.
Car runs great again, filled up with gas no problem & no fuel smells or leaks since. VW dealer said it MIGHT be covered come drop off car in 1 week for a few days 😂. For $27 & 2 hours it’s fixed thanks to you.
My production date is 8/2016 & it still uses this exact part for anyone else reading this.

Then I changed cars and I was gone, now all the sudden I see this video after a few years, I saw you with the beard and did not recognized you at first but within seconds I remember your way of talking to the camera and stuff. Thank you for this video. I had a 17 Alltrack with the same symptoms, and was having a heck of a time trying to solve it. No codes. Everything checked out ok. Only 47K on the clock.
I gave this a shot and fixed the car as well. It is not an easy thing to do with the tank in the car, but it is doable. A hint from the BMW bulletin was to unplug the back line first, as in my case, that was the hardest thing to do once the pump was unsnapped from its bracket. The front line only goes a short distance, so I removed it altogether to give my fat hand more room. If you were in my area, I would definitely buy you a beer!
    Cheers!

Hey, I'm currently going through the same thing. VWOA isn't being any help for me either. I talked to someone who went through the same situation and he was able to get VW to help cover the expenses and his advice was to go public and tweet @VW and @NHTSAgov basically asking them why they recalled the '15 & '16 golf models but not '17 when it's clearly still a problem and a major safety issue.
He said a regional rep contacted him after seeing the tweet and that's what led to them covering the expenses. There's no reason we should be the ones responsible for this expensive repair.

I'll tuck it away with the other paperwork I have for the car. • @valuedcustomer9933
    @valuedcustomer9933 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Had the same problem.. couldn't fully fill the tank and while driving it kept cutting out. Took my '17 GTI (35k on the clock) to the dealer to get fixed. They replaced the spark plugs, charged me $320, and obviously the issue persisted. - Took it to a local shop and they diagnosed as the "suction pump" issue. Also said some kinda charcoal canister has been messed up by the issue too. Cost to fix? "$3700-$4000"....
I just called the dealer and let them know what's up. They said they will contact VWA but can't guarantee that VWA will do anything for me. We'll see.
Between myself and my family we've owned over 2 dozen VWs over the years.. Bugs, Rabbits, Golfs, a Microvan, Dasher, Tiguan, even a diesel Rabbit truck..... up until this point I and my family are lifers for VW. But if VWA doesn't make this right we will never own another VAG product again. Totally inexcusable.
Thanks for the great video, btw. This will definitely come up when I'm arguing my case.

Could you tell me if this is the same part that needs to be replaced for a 2019 Mk7.5 R. Every website and all the dealerships I've called are saying this part is NOT for my car . I've been dealing with this fuel issue for over a month now.

I can't tell you for sure, but the part is cheap. It's just hard to put the part in. Do you know any mechanics who could help you open the tank and take a look?

@@RadFox1320 i installed my In tank Fuel Pump - The Work is not the problem for me, its just going to be extremely frustrating if i pull the rear Seats and open up the tank and disconnect everything and THAT sensor is wrong , or not inside my fuel tank ... Im not going to be a happy camper, and ill have to put it all back together to go home from the shop .

I am having similar issues with my 2016 MK7 Golf R as well. I took it to the dealer today and they informed me that the Charcoal Canister and Evap Valve need replaced. They wanted $1800 to do it, so I'll be doing those two items myself for $600. I'll reply back if it fixes my fuel filling issues. The part being discussed in this thread does NOT appear to be part of the Golf R fuel tank though, from the information I have received.

One thing my car does (2020 GTI) after i drive the car and park it, get out i hear a pump going. At 1st i thought it was just the coolant pump going but no this pump sound comes from the gas tank area. You can really hear it near the passenger side rear tire where the gas fill is. It has done this since new. Does anyone know what the noise is? I'm guessing it's some kind of purge valve but my MK6 GTI never did this. That's all i have to compare to. Just curious if anyone else has this noise?

hello friend, i'm brazilian, i have 1 golf 7 tsi. 1.4 turbo. every time I open the tank there is pressure and a smell of gasoline at the mouth of the tank, I have already changed the canister valve, the tank cap and nothing. What can it be? need to change the canister filter.

@@JohanRosenbergJensen I didn't find the error. I'm already used to this situation. It usually happens with the tank entering the gasoline reserve.

@@wesleyhill7594 my warranty covered the repair, but I had to take it to the dealer. It took them a whole month to get it figured out / get parts and repair it. Kind of a nightmare. The dealer replaced the whole gas tank. And then changed the evap canister cos it was flooded with fuel.
