  • South Africa prepares for its most important elections since the ANC took power in 1994. Markets are on edge, weighing the potential of a major shift in power dynamics, but coalition building could help ease concerns and settle the rand, which has been the worst performing major currency since Cyril Ramaphosa became president. Bloomberg looks ahead to the May 29th election with political commentator and Bloomberg Opinion columnist Justice Malala, and Citi Managing Director and South Africa Economist, Gina Schoeman.

The ANC has made a lot of mistakes but will still win as they have also done a lot of improvements for the long suffering black south Africans. The rural masses and low income South Africans appreciate those effort. The youth are ever impatient naturally but platforms like this ignore how our people appreciate every good change after apartheid. It's almost as if people are supposed to develop insomnia yet my engagement with low income people has revealed they appreciate the difficulties faced. Most hide their awareness of existing racism with smiles of unawareness but when speaking to them in our language in private reveal their awareness and the fact that the colour attitude. Our people know peace stability comes with compromise and resilience. This country is no island. The EFF has some correct messages some have said but needs to learn that global markets still have a lot of impact

All the positives the ANC brought was under the real ANC Mandela and Mbeki in first 15 years. Since the corrupt ones Zuma and Ramaphosa all gains was reversed. The ANC is full of thieves and pariahs now, good luck on them making improvements. The youth lives are passing them by, why should they be patient.

Quite dramatic and divorced from the reality on the ground. South Africa didn't collapse but rather stagnate. We are sorting out our inequality and social cohesion first. I quite like living here and wouldn't want to live anywhere else even though I have the privilege of that choice.

It’s a complex issue. Certain things definitely were better, mainly service delivery and the economy. However those benefits are lost on the fact that such a large proportion of the population was marginalised and the economy was built on inequality that still exists today. Apartheid was a failure and so is the current era. When you really take a close look at SA’s entire history, it was always a country set up for failure.

      Electrification:
      1987: 30%
      2023: over 94%
      Labour dependency ratio:
      1994: 380
      2019: 251
For every shack built post 94, 10 formal houses have been built.
In 1998: 340 people dependent on every nurse.
In 2019: 194 people dependent on every nurse.
In 1991: 44 white engineering graduates for every ONE black one. Today there are twice as many black engineering graduates as white ones (white number having grown too.)
In 1990 HALF the urban population was in slum.
In 2019 it's down to 20% of the urban population(despite massive urbanization and mass-migration over the last 30 years.)
In 2023 8% of the country's OVERALL population (both internal & foreign migrants) lived in informal shack dwellings.
In 2001 18% of the SA population was in multi-dimensional poverty.
      In 2019 6% were multi-dimensionally poor.

    • @GcinaTV
      @GcinaTV หลายเดือนก่อน

It’s funny when people that never go to the townships speak as if they know the people there. It’s like those white folk that really think all black South Africans will go ape shit when ANC loses power after 29 May. Have a look at multiple videos on the EFF manifesto launch and see how little that crowd is. A lot of people in townships worked for their respective municipalities, those jobs are gone. Do you think they don’t see who is responsible for their empty fridges? Stop looking at black folk as monkeys. No ANC will rule with outright majority after this year. I know this cause I see it when I go to “townships”. Start seeing “South Africa”, not “those South Africans” and “these South Africans”.
