The droning instrument is a sitar. Yes, in a blues band. One of the reasons that music from the 60s and early 70s is still worth listening to is that any sound was worth trying.

Actually, it's a Tanpura, not a Sitar. A Sitar has seven strings and has frets, and is a main instrument. The Tanpura has only four strings, no frets, and is a supporting instrument, a type called a "drone."

@@rafehr1378 There was quite a rage for sitars in the late '60s, starting, perhaps, with the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood." That's part of the reason Ravi Shankar got top billing at Monterey Pop.
"Blind Owl Wilson" had that magic voice....he died age 27, that voodoo age...
They are simply the most disrespected and underappreciated band in music. They are pure musicians.
Its true... I don't know how many friends and coworkers that talk about how much they like music, even older stuff... yet they never seem to know who canned heat is.
Between Wilson and Hite they probably owned every significant blues record in existence to that point. They had huge collections and knew their blues
Alan Wilson's voice is just hypnotic. His voice, the band, it draws you in, like you're in a O, Brother, Where Art Thou type of movie scene.
Alan Wilson's falsetto is excellent. The harmonica adds to the mood. There is a drone going through the whole song that never gets stale. This is my favorite Canned Heat hit. Usually, Bob Hits is the vocalist, but not on this recording.
Let's Work Together was another hit for Canned Heat. In the UK, it reached #2.
The great Alan Wilson is singing, not the main singer, Bob Hite, he is playing the harmonica. Alan Wilson was one that we lost to the 27 club, so long ago. He was so good on the rhythm guitar
He was a great slide player too.
Wilson played Harp on the record along with the vocals.
He😮was one of the best blues guitarist that ever was.
He was the first of the 27 club, He died of drug overdose in early 1970, then came janis and Jimi, and Jim one year later.
He wasn't the first, Robert Johnson was in 1938 and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones was in 1969, then Alan Wilson in 1970, then so on. I am sure there were many more, but those are the rock/blues artists I know of.
Canned Heat is amazing. This is what the Grateful Dead would have sounded like if Pigpen had lived. You guys should totally check out the album they did with blues legend John Lee Hooker. It's called Hooker n' Heat and it's d o p e!
Totally agree Simon, Iv'e loved that album since it came out. can't get enough of them.
Pigpen was another one that died to young.
Worked out well for the Grateful Dead though, they still ended up becoming the most over-rated band of all time.
Only thing about the dead is the pot scene otherwise the dead sucked

What a song to hear for the first time. Some groove.
Reminds me of outdoor concerts in the 70s. We could spend the day, take food/beverage/blankets, see several groups, and all for about 10 bucks. You both would've had a blast!
I first heard Caned Heat back in 1968. Because of them I become a huge blues fan.

Same thing happened to me. I remember buying the double vinyl album Hooker & Heat, from Record Club of America (anybody remember them?), Which featured their idol, John Lee Hooker. I wore that album out. Took up playing blues harp for about five years. I was decent, but not great. Still love playing it once in a while

It is back wood psychedelic Blues and he is using his hand over his mouth to make that muffle vocal sound......totally....we use to play this song all the time in parties. Great reactions!!!

Very hypnotic, isn't it? A lot of the time, it was the big guy, Bob "The Bear" Hite singing lead, but on this song the lead vocalist is Al "Blind Owl" Wilson. Both Blind Owl and The Bear have passed away, but I believe there's still a version of Canned Heat out there doing gigs. Having been around as long as they have, and gone through so many lineups, their albums vary wildly in quality, but they've definitely got a few gems and this is one of them.
Alan (Blind Owl) Wilson was the man. Slide guitar, harmonica and vocals. They were never the same after his tragic death.
Jeff healey did an amazing blues version of this song for the Road House soundtrack, but you can't find the song anywhere except from the movie clip.
Canned Heat tapped heavily into John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillun" chord pattern. Al Wilson and Bob Hite each had legendarily large collections of blues and R&B records. Wilson is the singer here. He played slide guitar and harmonica as well. This band was also distinctive for giving its members weird silly nicknames which Hite gleefully went through on their classic "Fried Hockey Boogie." So Wilson was "Blind Owl," Hite was "the Bear," bassist Larry Taylor was "the Mole," the drummer was Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra, and lead guitarist Henry Vestine was "the Sunflower." (Vestine was out of the group briefly and his replacement was Harvey "the Snake" Mandel.)
The obvious next choice is "Let's Work Together" but my favorite Canned Heat performance will always be "Fried Hockey Boogie."
Also seems like some influence from or vocal similarity to Bill Monroe.
Didn't they also do "Refried Boogie". Although they had many different sounds I always think of them as a Boogie band. "Woodstock Boogie", "John Lee Hooker Boogie". They sure knew how to boogie.
Jay and Amber are probably not familiar with John Lee Hooker but they sure should look into him and his influential music. How about it, guys? Gonna dig into some roots blues from John Lee Hooker?
Yes, but what’s most important to take from this is Bob ‘The Bear’s continual exhortation “don’t forget to boogie!”
Hooker N' Heat is a good way to ease into John Lee Hooker... Also should be noted that Canned Heat is a known gateway to Hot Tuna...
Canned Heat lead me out of camp at 2:30 in the morning in the rain to catch a ferry back to Valdez, Alaska from Cordova, Alaska! Great times, going back for the Fourth.
We used to get stoned and listen to this regularly back in the day. Good tunes, good memories.

Speaking of blues, there's a guitar player named Albert King who is one of the blues pioneers, he played his guitar left handed and had a unique style. You'll like him , he was one of Stevie Ray Vaughn's idols. Please react to "I'll Play The Blues For You", I love the horns in that one.
Canned Heat was at Woodstock. Goin’ up the Country was my mum’s favourite song. She’s 84 now and still listening to new music. This was my fave Canned Heat song. ❤️🇨🇦

Canned Heat is awesome. Laid back rock. Blind Owl is singing vocals on this one. He is also the genius behind the guitar. Bear is on the harmonica. Play "Work Together" and "Amphetamine Annie"

Love me some Canned Heat, and especially Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson. Although Bob Hite was their regular vocalist, this is Alan singing. His vocals were influenced by Skip James. It is Bob Hite on harmonica here, but Alan Wilson is a harp and blues slide guitarist master. One of my all time fave albums is the one that they did with John Lee Hooker just before Alan's passing. Its called "Hooker And Heat". The droneing sound was influenced by Alan's love of east Indian music. Thanks for reacting to this awesome band! I would suggest "Lets Work Together" for their next song. That one has Bob "The Bear" Hite on vocals
Canned Heat was one of the first white bands, along with the Paul Butterfield Band and The Blues Project, who played the blues as it should be played. The various members were also musicologists and record collectors. And they were the ultimate jam band. When I was a kid I was fortunate enough to see a jam session between the Heat and JIM MORRISON! Yes, that one. And yes, Al was singing falsetto - he copied that from Skip James.
Before The Heat, Al Wilson and his friend John Fahey spent a number of years traveling the Deep South, tracking down a number of early blues greats - Son House, Skip James and Bukka White - and arranging second careers and recording contracts for them.
Fahey was a crucial figure in the music underground. He set up one of the first indie labels, and spent several decades recording his own guitar compositions - basically classical guitar pieces for steel strings based on American folk themes. Acoustic players consider him one of the most influential composers of the last century. He’s worth checking out. (I learned guitar from listening to his stuff, btw.)
Im from the UK, the first time I heard this band as a kid i loved them and bought the cook book on vinyl, even though we have some great blues bands here in the uk, there is not one band who can match Canned Heat, supeb, and the band history is interesting too

Canned Heat played with a brother band, Pacific Gas & Electic. Their only big-time tune was; "Are You Ready". Charlie Allen's singer had the soul sound.
Singer also playing the harmonica; he was also a great blues harpist

I had the chance to see them twice in concert when I was a teenager!! They were totally incredible! They just don't make musicians like that these days.
I was a fan of Canned Heat while listening to the radio, then I saw them live in 1`969 at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Rock in 1969, followed by Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Johnny Winter and headlined by Led Zepplin. One of the best festivals of all time - be jealous!

During the 60s Canned Heat had two singers Alan (Blind Owl) Wilson and Bob (The Bear) Hite . That's the Owl singing he died in 1970 either by overdose or suicide. Hite died in 1981 of an overdose
A sitar was played in this song. The Yardbirds and The Beatles incorporated the use of sitars into some of their songs, and other Rock groups followed their lead.

Classic from this fine band rarely mentioned. Saw them in England back then. Sadly singer Al Wilson died in a sleeping bag on a hillside - the verdict accidental death.

I went to Height Ashbury in the late 60's twice at16. What a show. People all over the sidewalks under blankets!!!.
Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson sang the lead on that. He’s emulating the style of Skip James. ( Someone you should check out if you want to go down that rabbit hole) The Blind Owl was a blues savant and a very odd character even for those times. But he was a blues genius. Very troubled young man who left this world way too young.

The lead vocals are by the multi-talented Alan " Blind Owl" Wilson who also provides the harmonica & the rhythm guitar. He also plays the droning instrument, the tanpura. The instrument is from India and looks similar to a sitar. Alan was unfortunately a victim of suicide. A great loss to the world of music. John Lee Hooker said he was one of the best blues harmonica players he had ever heard.

That sound is from a Tambura played by Alan Wilson...It's a form of guitar used in Central Asia....Great reaction....These guys were at Woodstock and boogied the place down...!!
The droning noise was an Indian Sitar, a very difficult instrument to play. George Harrison was taught by a master of the instrument, Ravi Shankar.

William, I can't tell you how many times Iv'e asked for anything by Johnny from them and other reactors and have got no response. I;m guessing they take one look at him and figure he's a real freak...lol. Iv'e loved him for over 50 years and have seen him live almost 25 times. Best blues player ever.
The vocals are reminiscent of Skip James, a blues legend from 1931 who was rediscovered in the 60s. The falsetto was his Thang.
Have always loved this group. Canned Heat is a great blues & rock band that was formed in 1965. Their two biggest hits were "On The Road Again" in 1967 & "Going Up The Country" in 1968. Also love their song from 1970 "Let's Work Together".
My favorite blues song is one my parents played often and that I recommend to any young married couple - We’re Gonna Make It, by Little Milton. I guarantee you will love his voice, the horns, and the message of the song. When my parents were poor and struggling this song encouraged my mother because she said at least we were doing better than the folks in the song. 😆
This was at the Woodstock 1969, I'm sure canned Heat was there and they did this song.
I am old brit , but when i was young i hitch hiked all over Europe and across the states from coast to coast and back. every morning i had I'm On The Road again running through my head.

I saw the Al Wilson Heat three times, during one of which they jammed with Jim Morrison on harp. Then with Hooker!

Blind Owl Wilson sang this , their first big hit , you can see him tearing up a Gibson on one of the outakes from the Woodstock 1969 shows .
Saw Canned Heat in 1993 at Kent Custom Bike Show (25 years after this was released) and they put on a brilliant show!

Canned Heat performed at Woodstock. Goin' Up the Country is prominently featured in the movie.
Al Wilson, who not only sang this and "Going Up the Country" (Bob Hite was the regular singer; he sang "Bullfrog Blues"), but wrote most of the songs.
Sadly, Al was one of the charter members of the "27 Club". He and Janis and Jimi all died within a month in 1970. (Al was afraid of flying and apparently accidentally OD's on tranquilizers. Some thought it might be a suicide, but he didn't leave a note, so that's just a guess.)
Starting at the Monteray Festival in 68, then Woodstock in 69, the band got a whole following with their southern blues, which is still as vibrant today as they were back then. Great choice guys, they have another great song, Let's Work Together, that's worth a listen.

The odd buzzing instrument in this song is a middle eastern instrument called a tambura (aka tanpura or tanpuri).
This is a cool old blues jam....and probably their most famous song!
Born in ‘74 in the South, here. Always loved modern and classic and prog rock (Led Zep to Poison, etc) ….but, despite it being “before my time”…man…having Canned Heat playing in my car when I had a day off and went out to a park or lake with a girlfriend. Yeah. Yeah. Just…yeah!

1970 was a really tragic year in music. The singer here Al Wilson, was a member of the "27 club" and died of a drug overdose at age 27. Other 27 club members including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison all died within a few months of Wilson.
There was an independent oldies station in my town growing up, and they’d play this song at weird hours of the late evening or early morning. It always creeped me out somehow!

I think of it as boogie rock. You'll hear this style of music in the sound track of movies set around the southern swamp lands.

Some other great songs from them is Poor Moon, Let’s Work Together, Dust My Broom. Too many to list. A long one of theirs is Fried Hockey Boogie but it is also one of my favorites. Also you need to check out the Woodstock footage of their performance.

Love ol'canned heat I have the vinyl cook book gatefold album on the inside side opened is a picture of each member of the band next to their baby pictures and it's autographed by Richard Hite (the bear's brother) and awesome bass player and he signed it don't forget to boogie 🤟🍺🍻🎸 check out fried hockey boogie it's 11 plus minutes of ecstasy with solo's by each one of the band, it's a must for sure for sure 🍺🍻🎸🤟
Another weird 80’s band is “Fine Young Canniballs”. They made a song called “She Drives Me Crazy”. It’s a typic 80’s sound. And now I see, that you already did a reaction to it, so I will go and watch that.

when my dad and his boys rolled out on patrol in there personnel carrier in plakue Vietnam he said they played this song and blood sweat and tears not scared of dying 1970.
