When i was a six year old boy in Hamburg we had the big storm an flood that costs 35o lifes in the night of 12t. Feb.1962. These helicopters from Bundeswehr and US army rescued a lot of people in the morning. The pilot; Mr. Hauber, from Meravo had been one of the hero pilots in February 1962. I had a flight with him at an airshow at Rossfeld airfield September 2004.
meiner oma ihr bruder war damals auch pilot und ist mit herr hauber abwechseld nach hamburg geflogen.er ist später noch mit der sikorsky und herr hauber in afrika einsätze geflogen um brücken zu bauen
The engine is a Wright Cyclone radial. The ruskies built a copy, the Shevnetsov AH 62 only difference being the crankshaft rotates in opposite direction to the Wright.

Hi friends, this is my favorite Sikorsky S58 helicopter. I remember this in 1972 to 1976 Long Cheng CIA U.S. A. headquarters when General vang Pao of the hmong leader. He had lot friends of French and American bring together of UH-1 Huey helicopter, Chinooks, T-28 fighters bomber many other flying planes to land Long Cheng headquarters. I hope to see this Sikorsky S58 in U.S.A. somewhere i can ask them give me a ride one time.
The perfect helicopter for a large scale catastrophe or apocalypse. Since it has a radial engine and not a turbine it runs on regular gasoline meaning that you can fill this thng up at any ordinary gas station. I am actualy thinking about writing a apocalypse themed book and if so I will make the S-58/H-34 the center of attention and the main reason why the main protagonists survive while most others dont.
You'd need to work out a suitable way of getting TEL or a lead replacement solution for it. Those old valves, and possibly other parts of the engine, will quickly wear out without it.
@@BazilRat Most of those old engines have been rebuilt several times over the years since they were first built. I'm sure most of them have had hardened valve seats installed by now.
I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I imagine for a helicopter it is important to be able to see below, so maybe the cockpit being on top has that as a drawbackx
I love this old helicopter. I still remember when I was a kid I had a red colour model of the same helicopter. That was a key winding operated model and I used my all effort to make it fly by fixing a motor in the main rotor and even bent the pitch of plastic rotor 🙂 but did not succeed.

Wonderful, love the piston engine sound. Thanks.
Soo beautiful design. Many thanks for sharing the video sir
Love the sound of those radial engines! Sound better than any turbine.
These big old Sikorsky radials are fascinating to watch. Also impressive is the mechanic crawling up and down that beast like a 20 year old.
The engine is a Wright Cyclone radial. The ruskies built a copy, the Shevnetsov AH 62 only difference being the crankshaft rotates in opposite direction to the Wright.
When you love what you do you don't feel pain.
I love vintage helecopters as much as vintage planes!

What a beautiful machine!
Get some, get some, yeah, yeah yeah baby, get some! What a great sound!
The "Mimmi !"❤😊
So the engine is mounted at the nose of the chopper... is there a shaft that is connected directly to the propeller
Yes, thats why the engine is in that wonky angle.
Gotta love any helicopter that sounds like that.
With the radial piston engine locked away behind doors I wonder how the engine stays cool...?
Wow amazing .Is it a Helicopter or 200 pound gym dumble ..

Very reliable and pretty much maintenance free engine. Lovely old thing..

@@tiltil9442 I like soup
@@tiltil9442- I love cake and radial aircraft engines. These engines were a powerplant of the Sherman tank also. Exhaust pipes warmed soup.
Happy days! Loved this old beauty when I was kid, feeling nostalgic

I had no idea this thing had a radial engine

It is radial engine similar to the ones used by B-17s.
And by many other planes

That's a lot of smart ass in one sentence... ;)
The Sherman's engine sounds and looks like a radial engine. Not the other way round
So many years has been passed, new helicopter has been involved. engines and pilot had switched places 🤣

No, same manufacture though
If it has a hydraulic clutch in the transmission, I wonder?
a torque converter similar to an automatic auto transmission, gets rotor up to speed and chop the throttle for mechanical engagement
