Being a framing contractor for 30 yrs , I didn’t see How you helped those watching ..become..a contractor. You did explain some aspects of contracting, but not much else.
Hi, Joe. I’m in high school and how should I go about becoming a contractor/remodeling homes? I want to plan for my future because my senior year is coming up
Great info you shared. Many contractors have that question about licensing. Just like you I got burned out with construction and traveling all over the US to sites. I now work from home as well helping contractors get registered, certified and bid government contracts. I now work from home too!
Thanks for the video Mark! I was wondering about what kind of contractual agreements you used with your clients, and whether you had to hire a lawyer? Did you just use a contract template for Michigan, and basically have a lawyer make it all official?
Great video Mark!! It would be great if you could make share your knowledge about the differences between contractor and subcontractor and your legal responisibility to sub-contractor.
To mark or any contractors in these comments I am curious I turned 18 a few months ago and I want to get into contracting but I have no idea where to start just looking for some answers I’m in Florida
Anthony saucedo No. There are plenty of pay as you go insurance providers for workman’s comp and liability who are just getting started. When you get consistent work you can look for a annual provider.
Mark great video. I want to start my own Handyman business, do i need any type of handyman license, or do i need to get a general contractors license? What is your take in the handyman business? Please help, looking to change careers. Should i get experience in the construction field before I tackle a small handyman business?
Most states required some sort of license to obtain permits which is required for most things. Some things like trim and painting may be exempt. It's always best to check your states codes.
ryan shannon it definitely can help, but I wouldn’t say it’s a requirement. I actually have my real estate and contractors license in MI. My experience as a general contractor has absolutely helped me to be able to identify items that I can use for leverage on an investment property. That said, you could always hire a contractor to do that for you.
DGDR123 A general contractor is more or less a license which allows all aspects of construction and remodeling. Where as a contractor is more specialized toward a certain aspect or trade.
DGDR123 It really depends on how you set up your business. In my early days I kept a lot in house. Today I do use a lot of specialized contractors. It’s really up to you if you are a general. It also depends if you have the skills in house or not.
I am a architectural drafter in health care design and in school to become an architect. I am highly skilled and looking to design homes on the side. While I am a great designer, it has not been enough to land jobs, I got one home design where a client wanted a few design ideas. I feel getting a residential contractor's license can give me more responsibility, which will give me more clients. If you don't mind answering can my own knowledge, degree (two in construction), and work experience as a draftsman qualify me for sitting for the contractor's license (residential).
I do believe with the credentials that you mentioned, that you would have great understanding of the residential Builders test. I think it would also be a great fit as it would allow you to design and general contract your projects. As I mentioned, the test varies from state to state so make sure to research any potential avenues to help you succeed.
I have a question. I would like to become a contractor. I’m currently working for a company right now that specializes in low income housing units repair. It’s a good paying job but I want to do more and I was told I could get a project manager position in the next few months. I prefer building houses but should I take the position or try to get that position?
I was working on becoming a contractor but I've been dealing with back injuries lately. Is the physical stress of being a contractor less than being a carpenter?
MyTopTrending how did you do it bro? I'm 16 and I've worked some construction for like 4 years helping out so I have some knowledge but I also have someone to mentor me on this and I hope to become one just like you
how stringent were they on checking on the experience you put down on the application, i have been in the business for 6 years but as a laborer, can i still be considered qualified , i also have 2 years of being a superintendent. PLesase write back
Michael, It really depends on your states laws. Generally speaking, regardless of your experience you still have to go though the licensing process. Each state has their own guidelines of what the requirements are. I know here in MI, even if you have 30 years experience, you still have to pay for the licensing classes and go through an apprenticeship.
Mark Chandonnet how about getting something more like a C 21 demolition license rather than a general B building license are the requirements easier in that case because that's really what I want to start doing that's where my experience comes from
Getting a specialized license for just a portion of the trade is definitely easier and faster then getting fully licensed. The test here in MI is less than a third of the full licensing test and is pretty straight forward.
Mark Chandonnet I love all the works that general contractors do, and very interested it that field. But how much money could you make being a general contractor? Is the intense labor of it worth it?
They have to do an estimate and determine how much time it'll take and materials and such and such. The other guy who replied probably has dealt with bad contacted
Yolanda Williams you call up 3 companies that are your competition and ask for base price. Then you put a markup of atleast 50% on it. And hire them to do that job for yoh

in regards to general contracting does becoming a contractor help you understand real estate investment properties ?

Most likely you would need a general contractors license.

How do a contractor charge for a job presented to him?
Put some random dollar amounts on the wall then throw a dart at it. Whichever dollar amount you hit is what you charge your customer.
They have to do an estimate and determine how much time it'll take and materials and such and such. The other guy who replied probably has dealt with bad contacted

Erm...
Wedding ring. Damn! Anyway. I want to build houses. I want to know how to build a house from the ground up.
Erika Drummond you would first need to get the permits, then hire a general contractor most likely. That takes quite a bit of money usually.
Sum Arber ummm no she doesn’t in most places she can get a homeowner permit and do the work herself or hire people herself.
