  • These chicks are so cute. I think we'll have to keep them all, even the roosters. Which chick did you like best?

      Why aren't you letting them outside? They really need to be out to eat grass and bugs

    My Daughter Matilda really loves all your Chicks.
    We hatched some Chicks out of some fertilised eggs we got from a local chicken farmer this year under some broody hens.
    we are In the se predicament as you trying to find out what breeds we have.
    we think that second chick is definitely a speckled Sussex breed chook. the broody Hen who hatched our five little chick's is an English Sussex Chciken.
    love your channel Thank for sharing your Adventures into chickens/ gardening with us.

    I’ve just found you and absolutely love getting to see all of your chickens and roosters…I watched you make ice cream (by far, my favorite dessert!)…and so I’ve just started watching and can’t wait to see what’s next! My daughter and I have a few chickens (her a bit more than I lol) and we have really enjoyed sharing that bond of chicken ownership! She, along with her siblings gave me the whole chicken set-up last year for Mother’s Day and from there, there has been no turning back. 😂 We love our ladies! ♥️ 🐓

    My wife and I enjoy watching your videos. She has chickens also... one rooster and 13 hens. She started out with pullets from a chicken hatchery and even then, the hatchery didn't get them all right. So, it turned out that we had 4 roosters and were forced to take measures to reduce their number so that we weren't paying out a larger feed bill than necessary. I also just built her a new chicken coop which is about 7' x 14', and they all seem to love their new home. They have the freedom to go outdoors to their run (which is about 14' x 16') whenever they like. She loves them just as you do. Our oldest daughter, who is almost 50, got her love for chickens from her mama and has a flock of her own in Montana. Now her daughter, our granddaughter, loves spoiling their chickens as well. And our grandson has a daughter who is growing up with chickens as well. And that's how all this goes from one generation to the next. My wife, Carla, named her chickens in years past, but has decided to stop naming them. She found it too heartbreaking when they succumbed. From southeast Washington State, USA, thank you for sharing with us and may God bless you, Miles and Carla.

    Hi Chilli, Thanks for the good video. I enjoyed it. Since you had so many roosters, I thought I'd share a time when I purchased 1/2 doz bantam rhode island reds, all guaranteed hens 🤣
    They were 5 roosters, that quickly became 4 dinners and 1 rooster. From those humble beginnings though we had one lone chick - aptly called survivor, from then on we had much more success. Don't give up 🇦🇺

    I enjoy watching your videos. I just started this morning! But what fun you have. It’s nice to see a young gal having so much fun with their chicks. I have chicks in the house right now….15 of them. Here I go again. I’ve been raising chickens for about 8 years. That is a good point that you made about using hay instead of the pine bedding. I don’t know if I can get some hay right now, but good idea. God bless you real good! And your chickens!

    No 1 is a rooster, no 2 is a rooster, 3rd one is a rooster, no 4 unsure but leaning toward rooster, 5th one is a hen and maybe a Legbar, 6th one might be a hen, 7 is a hen, 8 is a hen 9th one is a rooster. Those are my guesses. Have you thought about starting a bachelor flock to keep the boys out of trouble until you eat them (if that's your plan)?

    They are so cute. Looks like they want to dust bath already. I put sand in a tub with a little diatomaceous earth for mine to start dust bathing in. I love the way you are socializing with them. Great job! Your roosters are starting to establish the pecking order. I had a feeling Georgie was a George. I thought I had a Violet but ended up a Victor. He was a lavender Orpington. Is this your first flock from hatching them yourself?

    • @chillidonela
      @chillidonela  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @DebraGorsline Yes, we give them a sand/dirt/diotamaceous earth dust bath. They love it. And yes, Georgie has to be George now 😅.
      This is my 2nd time hatching chicks. We did one batch earlier this year, 16 chicks, Black Australorps and Light Sussex. 12 turned out to be roosters 😅... but we processed most of them and left 2 who get along very well and also protect the ladies.

    • @DebraGorsline
      @DebraGorsline 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@chillidonela Wow! So many roosters! After I retired, I have done 4 batches of chicks, with only 3 or 4 at a time. All different breeds. My first little flock turn 6 years old tomorrow! They are happy old hens. When I was a child, I lived on a farm and the chickens were my responsibility. I had to help "process" my little pets. I felt so bad. Back then we would incubate our eggs as well but never ended up with as many roosters as you. You have what it takes! Me, I'm just a grandma now that enjoys the eggs, entertainment from the hens and the fertilizer for my gardens. I love your channel. Wish I had a granddaughter like you with the same big dreams of being self-sufficient.

    As a New Zealander, I imagined it would be impossible to keep chickens in Australia because the crocodiles, snakes and white pointer sharks would all fight over them 😂 We don't have those problems in NZ, but we do have Australian swamp harrier hawks that eat chickens.

    • @chillidonela
      @chillidonela  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, it is tough here in Aus. Down here in Tassie, we have snakes, eagles, and hawks, as well as Tassie devils and Quolls.

  • @gradinaorganicatransilvania
    @gradinaorganicatransilvania 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    You don’t have as many female chicks as you think.😂 Most of them are roosters.
    Nr.1 is a cockerel
    Nr. 2 cockrel
    Nr.3 cockrel
    Nr.4 female chick
    Nr.5 female chick
    Nr.6 cockrel
    Nr.7 cockrel
    Nr.8 female chick
    Nr.9 cockrel
    I can tell they are roosters because their combs and wattles are much bigger and redder than the female’s. And the cockrels have their tail and wing feathers shorter, while the females have pointed wings and tail feathers. Their legs are also longer, and they usually stand up very tall.

    • @chillidonela
      @chillidonela  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Yeah, I think you are right ahaha, oh well, I'm going to keep them for breeding. Fingers crossed next time we get more hens, 3rd time is the charm, right?

    • @DebraGorsline
      @DebraGorsline 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@chillidonela Here in the US we can purchase chicks that have already been sexed. We have a 1 in 10 chance that it could be a rooster though. I have had 13 chicks with only 1 rooster. Watching you with your chicks makes me want more. Please remember that rule of thumb is 1 rooster per 8-10 hens. Your poor hens will be overwhelmed with so many roosters if you keep them all together. Also, roosters don't usually do very well with other roosters. They tend to fight for the ladies. Do you have a separate area to keep the boys?

    I don't think that Georgie is either a australorp or a speckled Sussex for she has yellow legs and as far as I know the other two don't. She reminds me of my old dork brahma hens but I am sure that they had feathers on their feet.
