- Gustaf Dalen was a Swedish engineer who is known for his work with the gas acetylene and his inventions that utilized it. His two most famous inventions are the Dalen light, which is a light based on slow combustion of acetylene, and the sun valve, a mechanism that opens the storage container of acetylene. Dalen was the first to figure out how to store acetylene in a pressurized container without resulting in it exploding. He did this by dissolving acetylene in acetone and storing the solution in a porous mass. Dalen revolutionized lighthouses and light buoys, transitioning them from oil-based to acetylene-based, greatly increasing their illumination while also greatly decreasing their cost and upkeep. For these contributions, Dalen won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1912. That same year, he was blinded by an acetylene-based explosion, but kept pushing forward for the sake of innovation, progress, and passion.

Great video! I didn't knew the origin of AGA and the tragic accident of Gustaf Dalén. When I was physics student at National University of Mexico I became fascinated with the liquefaction of gases and I learned about AGA and Linde AG work on gases. I read somewhere that acetylene can be poisonous.
I have used acetylene and know about the porous material in tank. However I did not know the story behind it. Now I know the rest of the story.
As I got it Dahlen met Enoch Thulin in Stockholm,
Thulin around 1916 started the first airplane factory here i Landskrona and a lot of the money came from
Gustav Dahlen. Saadly dr Thulin was killed in a plane crach in may 1919, but his airplane factory was the first here in
Sweden 😎
