My strategy for understanding difficult philosophical terms is to first find out the etymology of that word for example the term "substance" consists of the part "sub" that means "under" and the part "stance" that means "standing" so the the substance for example is something that constituates diffrent parts of reality and after I find out this I can add different meanings to that base definition.

my advice on taking notes is to use a question answer format. when you see a text you think is worth to take as a note. first ask yourself what is the question that this passage address then, write down that question and the passage should be the answer

My tip does not add anything to what is said here, but it is this: approach the text with a willingness to really dig in and digest - reading and re-reading sentences and paragraphs, flipping back to previous sections that you already read but which start to make better sense to you as you progress through the book. Approach the text with the humility that there may be much wisdom here that you do not yet understand - like a drummer learning a beat, new pathways in your brain may need to form before the philosophical reasoning starts to really make sense and become second nature.

Great tie in with music! Sometimes you just need to give your brain time to make the necessary connections, and to be patient with however long that takes. Just how a new musical lick or phrase can suddenly snap into place after many hours of intense struggle, the same is definitely true of difficult philosophical concepts.

Asking more advanced people for their impressions on the same text has helped me a lot. Then asking them to explain. Like a tall person reaching for an item on a shelf you cant yourself retrieve and bringing it down to your level.

Right on. One of the benefits of hosting this channel is I effectively get to do that with every interview.

Great hints, thanks Pat! Such an important topic. I highly recommend A.D Sertillange's book on the intellectual life, great supplement to everything you said. One other point that was really important for me: accept that you'll never be able to read everything.

For some reason known only to the overlords at TH-cam, his comment is no longer appearing, but user Simbelmyne asked for a book recommendation on symbolic logic. For that, I highly recommend an Introduction to Symbolic Logic by Susanne Langer.

Thank you for this video ! Would you recommend applying the same process to Nietzsche and his aphorisms or should I read them another way ?
